Mommies who drink Tea

Soooo I know we need to watch our caffeine intake and coffee has got to go, but what does anyone know about tea?  Just for a warm drink in the afternoon.  I am getting mixed reviews about herbal teas and I don't see my doctor for another 3 weeks....

Re: Mommies who drink Tea

  • You can drink coffee! I understand if you choose not to, but most doctors are fine with one cup per day. With tea you just have to be careful with some herbal teas. Normally it would have to be medicinal strength to really hurt you. Just to be safe I'd run it by your doc though.

  • Tea has less caffeine than coffee per cup, so you should be able to have a cup or two if you want to. 200 mg is considered ok, which is about a 12 oz cup of coffee. White tea has the least, other than herbal of course. I think the only thing you're supposed to avoid is raspberry something, and know most of my herbals (I drink a lot of rooibos and chamomile) are safe. Talk to your doctor when you can and do what makes you comfortable. Last pregnancy I did nothing not recommended the first trimester and started reintroducing things the second. This time I've read a lot more, and am taking a much more relaxed approach, including having a cup of I feel I need it. But do what's best for you and your peace of mind!
  • You could always drink decaffinated coffee as well...
  • I drank 3-4 cups coffee every day before I was pregnant and have decided to be off coffee by the end of the first trimester (I actually don’t have a desire for it most of the time due to MS.) So I normally have been drinking 2 cups of week black tea a day. I also drink ginger or chamomile tea 2 times a day. I also have tea that’s specifically for first trimester pregnancy that is a blend.
  • I think this would be a great post for our weekly Randoms thread too! Also can you please change your sn? It’s really hard to keep knotties straight :)

  • I drank tea my whole last pregnancy. I’m a huge tea drinker in general. I just avoided black tea.
  • My previous midwife had me drink a cup of raspberry leaf tea steeped for 1 hour every day. And two cups during the last trimester for uterine health. It definitely helped my need to sip on something at work.
  • I'm a huge tea drinker!

I prefer to hydrate with tea instead of plain water, so I fill my electric kettle twice each day to drink three liters of water each day if I can. I use one tea bag each of Yogi Chai Rooibos, Traditional Medicinals Pregnancy Tea, and Traditional Medicinals Turmeric. The tea is weak because of my tea to water ratio, but they get a long steep. They are all caffeine-free, but I do miss drinking black tea.

I also drink about four cups of coffee daily. DH and I switched to decaf over a year ago, we drink organic Swiss-Water Process (to avoid the decaffeinating chemical solvents).

Outside of pregnancy RRL (red raspberry leaf) tea is amazing. A few years ago I started having terrible monthly cramps, but when I started drinking RRL daily -at least from CD1 to ovulation- my cramps stopped entirely. I also drank green tea each day after ovulation until CD1 because it was supposed to help conception. It may have helped me, but I just love green tea all together.

  • I drink a lot of tea, mostly earl gray. I think the caffeine is within the safety guidelines.

  • I love tea! I drink a lot of ginger tea as long as my morning sickness is going strong. I also like just hot water with lemon juice squeezed in because that seems to settle my stomach.

I love this cinnamon apple spice tea made by Celestia. Tastes and smells amazing!

  • My favorite is a peppermint tea. Since the pregnancy, coffee has just smelled disgusting; so I've been drinking tea non-stop. Love love love, especially during these cold months.
  • I drink three cups of black tea a day. I NEED it.
  • I ordered my first decaf americano yesterday... it was pretty good and filled my desire for something warm to sip on! I can’t figure out what herbal teas are okay. I read chamomile is not okay, and one person said peppermint is not advised and then thirty people saying peppermint is great..... it’s all very confusing! The pregnancy tea by yogi tea and traditional medicinals are pretty decent tasting if you haven’t tried those yet.....

I can’t drink warm things lately with my morning sickness, however... anyone else completely confused as to what you should or should not consume, tea wise??? I get frustrated. I don’t remember being this frustrated last time.
  • I'm in the confused boat too! I am sticking with peppermint tea and one cup of coffee a day until I can meet with my midwife! I LOVE herbal teas, but there is so much conflicting advice, I can't make my mind up.
