STM -choosing between OB and hospital, how hard to switch ob later in preg?

I’m a STM and I’m stuck in the dilemma of choosing between sticking with my ob and switching hospitals or switching OB’s so I can be at the hospital I prefer. I would love any advice!

I absolutely love my OB! I’m very comfortable with her and appointments feel like seeing an old friend. I feel like she is genuinely super excited about our growing family. I had a scary internal hemorrhage right after having DD that almost resulted in a trip to the OR and she was able to handle the situation and stop the bleeding without having to do any surgical interventions.

I was completely set on staying with my ob until she told me at my appointment that she is changing practices and will be switching hospitals. She will have admitting privileges at both until May, but that doesn’t help me with a June due date! She said there is a chance that she may renew privileges to prevent losing patients, but that she’s thinking that being on call at both hospitals could be really challenging (which I completely understand).

The issue is that I’m very anxious about the hospital that she’s switching to. My previous hospital was AMAZING and is one of two in my area that I always hear people recommending. Ratio of nursing staff to moms in L&D was 1:1 and they offered complimentary outpatient visits with their Lactation consultants, which largely contributed to us being successful at breastfeeding and pumping.

Unfortunately, the only feedback I’ve ever heard about my OB’s new hospital was a friend who is a LD nurse saying, “whatever you do, don’t deliver at xyz hospital because it is TERRIBLE”

The bump cut off the rest of my extremely long question. I guess my question is, would you prioritize the ob or the hospital? If I decided to wait and see if my ob wants to renew privileges, how hard would it be to switch later in pregnancy?

  • Hi @Jenichael1217 welcome! We've been talking about this pretty extensively in the weekly questions and birth plans threads. I'd also recommend checking out this super helpful thread on the March board: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12719588/hospital-birthing-center-questions#latest

We try to avoid starting one of threads that are only about one person in particular. So for instance, the way March set it up was really inclusive and setup an environment for everyone to both give and receive advice. (I also think they covered just about everything in that thread, so worth a read.) One off posts also clutter the board and make it harder to find threads that are relevant for everyone.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I know forum formats can require a learning curve. I think you'll find what you're looking for in the above threads, though. I hope you'll join us!
