Please share your old wives tales!!!

My Dr has agreed that if my body starts labor before my repeat csection date I can try for a VBAC!!! So I'm ready to try ALL the old wives tales lol I'd really like to avoid a csection if at all possible! I have an appt this week at 38w4d and she will try stripping my membranes! But she said to go ahead and start actively trying to get my body ready!

  • Eat 6 dates a day. :) Not just an old wives tale, surprisingly; it has been shown to ripen the cervix and was recommended to me by my practice. I have 2 after each meal. Walk as much as you can, too. Glad you're able to try for a VBAC and I hope everything goes well for you!

  • Red raspberry leaf tea 3-4 cups a day can help tone the uterus and promote contractions. 
    Evening primrose oil can help soften the cervix
    walking. Lots of walking. 
    My OB said sex doesn’t do much more than irritate the cervix and nipple stimulation helps but can be painful. She said you can use your breast pump and freeze colostrum if you get any

  • I have been reading "Expecting Better" and the only at home effort that has been scientifically studied and showed a 30% increase in natural labor starting within 3 days was nipple stimulation (manual or with a breast pump). She also said that stripping membranes (done by the doctor) showed an increase in likeliness of natural labor, but your doctor may not do it if he is leaning toward a c-section. 

    All other efforts didn't show harm, but didn't show any real effect: walking, sex, evening primrose and red raspberry leaf tea.
  • I tried nipple stimulation, organic red rasberry leaf tea, and bounced on yoga ball, and walked stairs 2 at a time. I went into labor at 40+1 which was 3 days before my scheduled induction 
  • You can trying pumping for nipple stimulation, save the colostrum if you get any! 
    Anythinf that releases oxytocin in your body, so a bath, massages from your SO, making out, fun sensual stuff!!

    @kaitlinliz RRL tea is a somewhat bitter tea that some claim helps cause uterine contractions and improve toning of the uterus. But there is no definitive research/conclusions about it. A lot of midwives will recommend it.

    I don't care for the taste a lot, so I usually steep it with a bag of black tea or add a decent amount of honey.

  • Earth mama Third Trimester Tea has red raspberry leaf. 
  • @MaximumEffort I have some of that too! Got it as a gift....I don't really like the taste of it either, but just blend it with black tea or honey as well.
  • Not sure whether any one thing worked, but in the week leading up to labor I:

    1) drank a lot of my pregnancy tea (red raspberry leaf, nettle leaf, peppermint, and ginger), went for very long walks, ate spicy foods, wore high heels, got intimate with my husband, and got a massage. I was expecting to need to be induced (my mother was with all 5 of us) but went into labor naturally 1 week early.
