Re: Wednesday Ticker Change - 11/8

  • 1. How many weeks along are you? How big is baby?
6 weeks - size of a sweet pea

    2. How are you feeling?
Can I throw up and go back to bed now?

    3. Any appointments coming up?
Appointment at the end of November for dating and what not. Have to fly to the local hospital for that appointment...

    4. Rants, raves, celebrations, questions?
Meh. I've got no rants. My rave is I made it to 6 weeks, next hurdle is 10 weeks, then 12, then 2nd trimester.
    5. Gtky: What superpower would you want to have, and why?
Flight. Totally flight. I live "off the road system" in super rural Alaska and my life would be SOOOOOOOOO much easier if I could fly.

ALASKA?? I have so many questions...but I can't think of any right now...
  • @christcalifornia Lol. Yup. Alaska. I teach in a remote Native Alaskan Subsistence village. Village population under 400, school population about 120 (although most days we are lucky to actually get about 80 of them in the building). I teach SPED, Home Ec, Health, and coach coed Mixed 6 volleyball. Moved up here about 1.5 years ago because my family could not afford to eat, pay rent, and put gas in the car living and teaching in Las Vegas where we had been for 4 years (after moving out of upstate NY because I could not get a teaching job there). It is... interesting to say the least.
  • Wow! Vegas to Alaska! I can't imagine how that culture shock has been. How are you dealing with the odd daylight hours? @AKFarmerBecky
  • @christycalifornia
The culture shock wasn't really that bad as we lived in and grew up in Upstate New York. The daylight hours or lack there of can be tough in the winter - sun rise doesn't come until 10AM or so in the winter and the sun sets again by 4PM. In the summer we have blackout curtains so the rooms can get dark enough to sleep. But in the summer we were staying up until 2 or 3AM regularly because you body adjusts to the extra daylight.

The biggest shock/hardship that is hard for people outside or in the Lower 48 to understand and adjust to is being "off the road system" there are literally no roads in this part of Alaska. We are not connected to the rest of the state except by plane. There is no way to get to anything - including stores and doctors except by plane or ordering things online. In the winter when the river freezes over we can drive the "Ice road" to get to the nearest "city" - about 6,000 people. Right now my boys NEED new shoes and boots, and while I have the money for them, I can't get them because I can't put the money in my bank so I can order online and I can't buy them around here anywhere.
  • Looks like I'll be on this thread next week. Due date pushed back by a day.
  • Okay so my ticker change is on Wednesday.  I just realized I posted on the wrong thread earlier.  Ooops....

@AKFarmerBecky I am super interested in hearing more about life where you are! One of my good friends from HS lived in AK for a while (her DH is Airforce and they were stationed there for a few years). I used to love hearing her Alaska tales.

    1. How many weeks along are you? How big is baby? 6 weeks 1 day.  Sweet pea.  :)

    2. How are you feeling? I was super nauseous around lunchtime today, but felt better after I ate.  Peppermint tea is making my afternoon right now.

    3. Any appointments coming up? November 27th

    4. Rants, raves, celebrations, questions? DH is headed to Puerto Rico for 30 days and has to leave the day after Thanksgiving.  I am super proud of him and the work he is doing, but I am sad that he is going to miss all of our fun Christmas events we have planned.

    5. Gtky: What superpower would you want to have, and why?
      Teleportation.  Because efficiency.
