Babymoon: Traveling to Mexico?

Anyone else starting to think about a babymoon? I was thinking about traveling to Mexico in February to get some sun and rest mid-winter but then I started to think about zika virus which wasn't an issue when I was pregnant last time so now thinking maybe not tropics.... I would of course discuss with my doctor before planning anything.

Where are other people thinking of going pre-baby? What are some favorite travel destinations?

When I was pregnant with DD we went to Puerto Rico and it was so good for DH and me to have 3 days of uninterrupted relaxation!

  • My husband really wants to go somewhere . I don't think it's really in the budget . We may do
something more locally like to a bed and breakfast a couple hours away for a weekend .
  • I was thinking Sedona Arizona. No zika there that I know of.
  • I would love to do one but yeah it's tricky with Zika. I wouldn't personally risk it because the consequences can be pretty severe. Even when I was just TTC my family doctor tried to convince me to cancel my trip when the scare first happened... glad I didn't because I didn't get pregnant for over a year after that, but yeah. If we end up with some spare cash (cause that happens a lot :p) I might try for a short get away to Florida, just to escape the cold for a little bit.
  • Hard "no" on anywhere with Zika. We actually have been declining any invites from friends to travel in any zika areas for the last 2 years or so. Better safe than sorry.

and I am with you @sandbar517...I'm just trying to get my nausea under control. Can't even think about traveling. Arizona will be really nice for you though! Alone time/friend time is good for the soul
  • @thunderberry check out the CDC website before going to Florida even. I know there was an alert issued for Miami area.

We are going to Seattle over thanksgiving with our son and to visit BIL. We do have a wedding in state where we will have two nights to ourselves. Then it's busy season, so no more trips for us.

  • @sandbar517 I know it's early but today is the first day in 8 weeks that I'm actually feeling okay so I'm starting to get excited about planning!

@mileswithmyles good call with the CDC site, I didn't even think of looking there! I would love to do Hawaii but being on the east coast the flight is just too long for a weekend trip.

@purple2779 good idea about Arazona, I've been there on business and always thought about going back for vacation. I'll have to look into what tickets would cost.
  • @sandbar517 @kpc914 I get what you are saying. It actually helps take my mind off of some of the bad symptoms and gives me something to look forward too.  We had the Caribbean trip planned before I got KU and we didn't want to cancel our vacation all together, so that is how we ended up with NYC.
  • Oh, no I'm totally kidding, and I get it.  Now that I feel better I've started to let myself look at cribs and bedding, and start to plan what else we might need for Baby, too.  I was side eyeing some of the other BMBs that already have threads for baby showers and talking about birth/delivery plans, etc, so maybe I should (internally) apologize to them, too.  LOL

  • @mileswithmyles i agree. just being a cranky, nauseated, debbie downer. lol
but, really... this is probably around the time our BMB would want to start planning babymoons...since we are all getting to second tri. I am glad you were able to adjust your vacay to fit your needs! We may end up driving 8 hours south to my family's house in Palm Desert for some relaxation. Nothing crazy.
  • @heelsidehero yeah CDC is saying there are not currently any travel restrictions for Florida, the one for Miami was lifted a while ago. Although I guess that could change at any time, which is a downside if we'd have to cancel last minute.

I feel bad for people who live in Zika effected or at risk areas, the stress of it must suck!

  • We both have the same spring break this year so I'm hoping my mom will watch the toddler so we can go to our favorite winery that has overnight villas to basically gorge ourselves and sleep in!!
  • I was thinking Sedona Arizona. No zika there that I know of.
Sedona is great.  We'll probably get back there once or twice before this baby comes.

  • It’s never to early for any of this stuff! I’m still constantly puking so I don’t even know how we’ll announce and I’m 13 weeks haha.

We did did a quick trip to San Diego with our last. Just a weekend was enough. We were planning on Hawaii in March before we were KU and I’ll be 33 weeks returning if we go. It sounds nice but time off is hard.

And  my personal opinion is educating yourself on birth (and your plan) and your options is never too early! It’s my favorite thing to study and learn about
  • @thunderberry If you book and have to cancel, a doctors note would excuse you! Not that you’d want to deal with that hassle tho!
  • If the CDC advises against it, I would play it safe and not go. Statistically it's unlikely you'll get it but still doesn't seem worth it...

Technically there have been cases of Zika in Arizona, but they were all contracted outside the state. I live here with no issue so far... Sedona is beautiful, but you may want to go soon if you want warm weather... or wait until march.

i usually go to Florida to visit my dad in January but we aren't. We are going to Hawaii where there have been no issues.
  • I think Bermuda is Zika free.
  • Hard pass on Mexico with the travel warning and the tainted alcohol issues... not that you would be drinking but there’s some shady stuff going on there for sure.

Definitely try for somewhere else, though! We had a babymoon to Tahiti when I was 26 weeks with my first but then again it was a free trip and it’s much more difficult to find someone to watch 2 kids if we were to go away this time. DH has quarterly meetings in Destin so maybe we can squeeze in some beach time before this baby comes.
  • Zika first popped up when I was pregnant with my DD and I remember several moms on my BMB cancelling trips due to the zika threat. I say its not worth it. Wait til your baby making years are over.

Last time DH and I took a weekend getaway to sleepy little town about 2 hours away. We had a couples massage at the hotel's spa, ate out a lot, and really relaxed. It was very nice but didn't break the bank.

This time we're thinking that we don't really need/want a weekend away alone. Instead we thought we'd take our 17 month DD to an indoor waterpark for a weekend in Wisconsin Dells. We're from the Chicago area, so that will be a nice  getaway for the family towards the end of winter when we are all a little stir crazy.
  • Hey guys! For travel planning, here's a map of the current destinations with active Zika outbreaks: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/world-map-areas-with-zika

We're thinking Portugal or Hawaii this winter!
  • @arteduc8 we did an indoor water park when DD was 20 months and she loved it! we spent all day in the pool and toddler area and she was so happy!

@mamabird515 if your doctor okays the flight, go for the Hawaii trip! If it wasn't such a long flight for us that is what I would do!v

Mexico is now out of the question. I'll be looking into areas with no Zika for this trip. Maybe AZ, or a spa with yummy food.
  • (I stumbled upon this post while searching for something else...)

My boyfriend is in Mexico right now- on a business trip- without me!  I thought about getting permission from my OB to go, but it just didn't seem worth it.  Especially after I heard about this:
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/07/21/premature-baby-held-mexico-arrives-indiana/499005001/

....and then there's Zika to worry about as well!

  • @oywiththepoodlesalready Spa sounds great...a lot of them have "babymoon" specials.  Not sure if that is actually making it cheaper, but you will know that they have prenatal massage people on hand.
  • @ReadytoRun77 is the risk of Zika transmission from your partner only an issue before you get pregnant? Since your SO is in Mexico, do you have to take any precautions when he returns?

Looking at the CDC map my two warm choices for a baby moon are apparently out - Texas and Miami.

Guess we’ll be going to southern California. I used to live there so it’s not super exciting to me. I would love to do Hawaii but I don’t think DD can do the flight yet. Going to CA is already going to be an adventure from a flight length perspective.
  • My OB asked if we had any travel plans that included zika hot spots, told her we are going to the Tampa area in January and she was fine with it.  I'd skip Mexico for sure.
  • I was supposed to go to the Bahamas in early October, not for a babymoon, we had this booked since April.  I didn't go because of a very small Zika risk. DH still went with our friends, We were advised by my OB to not have sex when he got back or if we did to use a condom, just in case DH got it. He just got his blood tested for it last week, we don't have the results back yet. I'm not too concerned because the risk was so low, but I'm better to be safe than sorry type person.
  • @Ceridwen21 how long is the HI flight for you?  We are doing a 5 hr flight Friday with a 2 yr old but we are taking an 8pm flight out and a red eye back so I'm hoping no issues.
