Shots, shots, shots! [Injection question]

And no, not the fun kind.

Anyone know of any injection tips to keep from getting those itchy painful lumps that stick around for weeks on end? Or what to do when you acquire one? I'm a few weeks in to progesterone in oil once daily. Help a girl out.

[I hope this is not against rules -- I can't be the only one going through injections!]

Re: Shots, shots, shots! [Injection question]

  • In my previous cycles I got horrible welts! For some reason this time it hasn't been as bad thankfully! Have you tried a heating pad afterward to help the oil disperse? Also, I usually do mine before I take a shower so I think the warm water helps too. I feel your pain and hope you figure something out that helps!

  • I ice mine at night. Also inject before shower in the morning. The nurse suggested massaging the spot after injection but I haven't been able to do that. Too painful. You also may want to get progesterone Ethel oleate instead of progesterone in oil as it is thinner.
  • no advice but hope it gets better for you!

  • Have you tried lemon oil? A good friend of mine went through ivf and had to do the daily injections and swore by the lemon oil. Also, as someone else mentioned, ice after.
  • I do them nightly. Basically I found out my left side tends to not have as many problems, so I cycle around the target area on my left side and not hit the bruised areas if I can help it.

After the injection, I rub the area with a clean alcohol pad. I have heard that heating pads afterwards works well, but I haven't really had lumps since I started rubbing the area with the alcohol pad.

Also talk to your doctor if it is leaving itchy rashes. This happened to me once, and it turns out I was allergic to a certain additive. If you keep the bottle, they can hopefully identify which ones make you react.

Hope that helps. I have been doing the injections for months off and on now and it does get better.
  • Hats off to you moms, <3

  • I wasn't sure where to ask this, but thought this might be the place. I was 4 weeks and 2 days yesterday when I got my progesterone checked and the nurse just called and said the level was 7.4. She mentioned it was a little low, but that she'd check with the midwife and call me back. *TW I had a loss in July, which is why they told me to come in and get labs as soon as I had a positive test *TW but my first pregnancy was extremely easy and I had no issues at all. So I'm a little lost and basically a ball of anxiety :)

@kburg15 I was also 4w2d yesterday and asked them to check my progesterone along with my second beta (after FET).  The nurse said it was 7 but she didn’t say to do anything differently (than to keep up with the Estrace 3x/day and Endometrin 4x/day since my body is making none of that since they wouldn’t let me ovulate with a natural cycle :p). Although now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure progesterone via suppository doesn’t get into the blood stream the same way that PIO or progesterone from your own corpus luteum does...

Please report back on what your midwife says about it when she calls back!  Just remember the reason they asked you to come in as soon as you got your BFP was so that they can catch things and do something about it if needed.

  • Thanks @artemis618!

She did call back and said it should be above 10 (which is higher than what I found on Dr Google, but oh well) so they gave me a prescription for the suppository twice daily. Then insurance denied it saying I only needed one daily *eye roll* so I got that but will take it two times a day until I get that all sorted out. Going back tomorrow and Friday for beta checks—fingers crossed
  • Does anyone do the intramuscular shots on their own? I might have to do it by myself tonight and I’m kind of scared. Any tips?
  • @Lelo2006 I do intramuscular on my own. I sit on the couch, almost laying down, twist, and inject into the target area, which is like the side of the butt. RELAX is the biggest tip. The needle goes in easier. It is kind of tough to press the plunger, especially from the weird angle, but just be patient.

I tried my first shot while standing up, and I almost passed out from locking my knees. That's why I highly recommend sitting.  If you have any questions, let me know. I have been doing my own for months now
  • Also, breathing excercises helped me relax. Just take a deep exhale and let your body fall some, even if you don't feel tense. You will be surprised in how tense you actually are
  • Ugh, one more, I should mention some spots will feel more sensitive than others. I always put it against my skin, gently push the needle, and if I feel a ridiculous amount of pain, i move it a tad. If you hit a good spot, you won't feel it break the skin. If you relax, it won't hurt the muscle or bruise. I hope that makes sense
  • You’ll do great!!! I haven’t had to do this but I do know your mama instinct is stronger than your fear of doing it. :)
  • @Lelo2006 I second everything @Crystal321 said except I always stand in front of a mirror and do it. Never thought about trying them lying down. The needle does go in easy - I also ice the area to numb it for a few mins. GL and let us know how it goes!
  • I’m so sorry it took me so long to respond! For some reason I never get notifications. I basically hate the app, lol.

it actually went really well! You’re right, pushing in the plunger was kind of tough but it didn’t hurt at all. I had my husband do it last night but now I know I can do it :-).

    thanks for all the tips!
