Weekly Questions w/o Nov 6

Re: Weekly Questions w/o Nov 6

  • @marcus7676 less concerned about clothing since that doesn't take up much space; more concerned about bassinets/infant carseats/strollers/bouncers/etc.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I’m average height (5’6) and my husband is tall (6’2). We were both super long babies and tall kids and our son is only in the 10% for height so you honestly just never know. I would’ve never though our son who was 20.5 inches when he was born would still be below the 10% for height. 0-3 month will be your bff until you see how your kiddo grows and then you’ll be able to figure out your needs :)

  • @doxiemoxie212  Get a nice baby carrier and you'll be golden.  We used the carrier more than the stroller for the first six months.  Easy to pack, compact, and baby's generally like the carriers because they're close to mom and snuggled in.

We have a swing and neither DD or DS liked it.  We had a glider thing for DD-she loved it, DS did not.  My sister's bought me a cradle-DD liked it, DS did not.  I'd say if it's at all possible, buy second hand at first or borrow to see if baby likes it!  And even then, baby's preferences change over time.

So there's a long answer that's no help at all probably.  Really though, baby's do not need much their first six months of life.  All of the bassinets, strollers, RnPs are all just extra things that can be helpful if baby likes it.  Really, a safe place to sleep, milk, clothes, diapers, and lots of love is what they need most.

  • @boymama29 Right, I get that there's no way for us to know ahead of time, but should I just not buy an infant carseat or whatever in case it's too small too quickly? That's really the gist of my angst here.
  • @doxiemoxie212 so I got an infant car seat with my son more for convience when we went places (if he was sleeping we could just set the car seat in the cart or click him into the stroller). We switched to a convertible car seat around 4 months because our son hated his infant car seat (I think it made him to hot and he’s chubby haha), but then from that point on it’s taking him in and out of the car seat for every errand and it’s a real pain if they fall asleep especially if it’s a quick errand. I see it now as a second time Mom as a convience thing. Infant is for convience for you if your an out and about type person and driving around a lot. Plus newbies sleep aloooooot. I’m not sure if any of this is helpful because I feel like I just rambled.
  • @PatientlyWaiting10 Yes, definitely hoping to baby wear, and DEFINITELY minimize the amount of stuff. No nursery stuff, etc. But we live in Manhattan, so we don't have a car, and we walk everywhere, so I think a stroller with a basinet is ideal. I'm sort of hoping to use the Uppababy basinet with the stand as baby's sleep surface to minimize stuff. But I'm nervous about baby outgrowing it and then being out of options lol.
  • I had a question about slightly higher than normal blood pressure. I went in to get my rhogam shot and for some odd reason got really nervous. I get flu shots, fine having blood drawn but the whole needle in the butt and me pulling down my pants got my heart racing. So since this was a nurse visit, she had to take my vitals and my blood pressure was 136/64 which is high normal, but I have ALWAYS had just normal blood pressure, even with my previous prganancy. Do you think the nerves could play a part in elevating my blood pressure? My hands were shaking, silly because it was such no big deal once it was over.
  • At the first dental cleaning after DS, I had 8 cavities. They were areas of small decay prior to pregnancy that grew to need attention right after. I have been doing really well and have had no fillings since. I now use a acid neutralizing toothpaste I get from the office. Just wondering if anyone had a similar experience or has tried anything else that has worked if you're cavity prone.

  • @doxiemoxie212 - My oldest son was 75% and was in his infant car seat (Chicco Keyfit30) until right around a year old.  As far as car seats go, check out the height restrictions.  Then check out some height/age charts (different for boys and girls) and see what to expect on the upper end of things at 6 months.  That should give you a good indication.  Every car seat is different for height limits.

I think the biggest thing would be to avoid bigger toys/items that you won't need until after 6 months (jumperoo, high chair, etc.) and buy them after the move.

  • @doxiemoxie212 definitely get an infant car seat - you'll need that to go from the hospital anyway.  I don't think you can cart a convertable in. DS used his until 10 months (uppababy mesa, which has a higher height limit) and we moved him because I couldn't stand to lug it around anymore.  We had a baby bjorn bouncer that was small and we used it daily when he was little - a safe place to put him down while awake.  We ended up getting a jumper around 6 months, so you could hold off with that (off craigslist).  I dont' think you need all the other expensive gadgets, like the mamaroo, swing, RNP, etc. unless you become desparate for sleep.  The swing, as I've said in other posts, was our saviour, but I know a lot of babies hate them.  We didn't have a big play gym either - just got something small and wooden.
  • @marcus7676 @doxiemoxie212 - I'm sure it varies by state/hospital but when I left the hospital with my 1st we didn't have to bring the carseat to the hospital room.  They pushed me out to the car in the pick-up area and made sure we had a carseat at that time.  For liability reasons they can't help you put the baby in the seat anyway.  With that being said- I did have an infant seat (and will use the same seat this time around because, well, we have it...) but if I were to go back I would easily switch right to a convertible seat.  We ended up buying one at 4 months old anyway because she hated the infant seat, she would scream in it- definitely wouldn't sleep in it...and it is fing heavy to tote around.

  • Rock n Play - The automatic is a must!  We only used it for overnight sleep once in a while (such as when she was sick and the incline helped or when we were just desperate).  We used it for naps and just hanging out for the first few months.  That thing is a god send, unlike the Mamaroo which was worthless for us.

@krashke I could be wrong, but I think I recall it being mentioned at one of my ultrasounds that they knew for sure DD didn't have a cleft pallet.

@doxiemoxie212 I would be minimal with the NB, 0-3, and 3-6 stuff.  We blew through those.  Once we reached 6-9 and beyond that, things slowed down a little bit.  If you are moving to CA, don't invest in many long sleeves for winter!  Depending on where you will live, I tend to put DD in layers in the winters because the days still reach the 70s during the afternoon often.
  • @cupcakeforme I've read that the top number is directly impacted by nerves/rapid heartrate.  Mine's always elevated at the doctor because for some reason I just always get nervous when they take my blood pressure, but if I take it at a store or something it's much lower.  The bottom number should be consistent and is a better indicator of blood pressure.

  • @cupcakeforme nerves can definitely affect your blood pressure. My BP was high at my last appointment because I was really nervous, I took it again when I got home and it was normal. I wouldn't be too concerned about one high reading.
  • @courtyowl427 I've had a few more cavities than usual since having kids. I think it's because I've been sleep deprived and sometimes skip teeth brushing and flossing.

@doxiemoxie212 We used Uppababy bassinet with our babies (both in the 50th-80th percentile for height.) They both outgrew it developmentally before they were to tall for it. I do have a friend with off the charts tall babies who outgrew the Uppa bassinet (I think a little bit before she would have otherwise stopped using it.)

We used the bassinet for bedside sleeping in the stroller (no stand). I liked being able to push the stroller back and forth to pull them and then I could just roll the stroller out of the bedroom and have a place for baby to nap/lie down while I did stuff around the house.
  • Any thoughts on Sequential screening? Anyone have it scheduled?

  • @mimzgoy is that a brand of NIPT?
  • So many good questions!

@Amphibious22 DD only slept in RnP for first 2 months... than in crib once she fit in her Baby Merlin's Miracle Sleep Suit.  We have 2 cats and didn't like her sleeping in our room because we were worried the cats would climb in the RnP or Bassinet with her (even though they are terrified of her and avoid her like she has the plague).  Our pediatrician said that the only issue with sleeping in the RnP was the hard plastic back causes flat head more than a bassinet or crib.  As for the reflux - pediatrician told us that all babies are born with reflux (thus baby's spit up).  If the reflux is particularly bad (ie they can't keep any food down, lose weight because of it, crying after eating, ect) than propping up the mattress and adding medicine is used.  Most babies grow out of reflux after a few months when the stomach sphincter closes.  We were in an apartment with DD but now have a house- so the RnP will likely be kept downstairs and LO kept in in for most naps throughout the day while DD plays.  I may invest in a Halo

@doxiemoxie212 for the outgrowing of baby gear... DD has always been 50% so we didn't have any experience outgrowing before expected timeframe- but I will say that infant carrier WITH the weight of a 6+ month baby makes it irritating to lift in and out of the car... so we switched her to a convertible even though she still fits in the infant seat. She still liked her swing around 6 months, but it was a little small.  You may want to consider buying swings, bouncers, ect second- hand to keep cost down.  The bassinets/ crib situation is the only thing in the 6 month time frame that would be an issue.  Most babies switch over around 4 months.  If you want to wait until you move to put LO in a crib you should pay close attention to the weight requirements.

Also- you remember being 4 years old?  I barely remember last year.  Good memory!

  • @jsl82 I actually remember most things until 2, then things get fuzzy. DH has the same level of memory, which is weird/a coincidence. I think it might be because we both developed language skills early and had a lot of pre-school friends who just by chance also developed language skills early? But I don't really have any idea if that actually makes sense.

Fun fact: I remember being potty trained! What a fun thing to remember! (And my memory is prooooobably the reason I'll cap nursing at a certain point -- if I'm able to in the first place! -- regardless of how baby or I feel because I'm pretty grateful I don't have those memories.... although, I do have some of trying to convince my mom to let me go back to nursing, which she mercifully denied...)

@doxiemoxie212 Mom of a tall baby here (I’m 5’3” DH is 6’4” and DD appears to be taking after Dad). She was 20.5 inches at birth and 32” as she turns one this weekend.

We did a Britax B safe infant seat and she used that for 8-9 months before we got a Graco convertible. I second that having some kind of carrier is convenient when they are new.

Clothes - DD was born at 8 lb 9 oz, so newborn stuff lasted about a week. We blew through 3 and 6 months, mostly because she has long legs. She’s slowed down a bit as she got to 9 and 12 month sizes.  But again, long legs mean I have to do 12 month pants but can still wear 9 month shirts. I’d keep your stash in the 3-6 month range, then see how LO is tracking before you invest in a bunch of clothes s/he may not wear.

  • @doxiemoxie212 I remember being potty trained too. So crazy!!

  • Okay, real question: where to the ovaries go as pregnancy progresses? Do they travel up and sit in your ribcage? Do they stay down... but connected somehow? Are they in front? Are they in back? I must not be choosing the right words to search in google because I cannot find anything except information about ectopic pregnancies lol. I'm just curious.
  • @doxiemoxie212 ~ I don’t think this necessarily specifically answers your question - but this is a great progesssion of pregnancy video in that it shows how things movement around to make room for baby

  • @BurlapandLace yes, I've seen that lol, it's actually what made me curious about the ovaries! ;)
  • She was probably in the bassinet until 4-5 months. Started to get too long and be able to roll over.

@doxiemoxie212 I would assume they move up since the fallopian tubes and ovaries would be attached to the growing uterus?  I don't remember ever learning about this in nursing school.

Eta I found a diagram by googling internal anatomy pregnancy ovaries. It looks like I was wrong.

@doxiemoxie212 I think they go to the back. Don’t quote me on that though haha During some scans I remember them having to take pictures of my ovaries and the one tech said “before the disappear to the back and we cant see them”

  • I'm really late to reading the question thread, but the RNP automatic was a lifesaver for us. DD had terrible reflux. It took us a few weeks to figure out, but from the first night home (and in the hospital) she screamed and would barely sleep if laid flat on her back. So we put her in the RNP next to the bed and it was so much better. Within a few weeks she started spitting up really bad and the doctor prescribed us medicine and said it was fine for her to sleep in the RNP. She never had any problems with flat head. Around 4 months she was getting big and I worried about rolling over so we moved her flat and she was able to transition fine. I wanted to get a halo bassinet for this current baby but I'm worried to spend the money and end up just using the RNP again.
  • @doxiemoxie212 OMG, I never even thought about where the ovaries go!! I can't find ish on initial Google searches either!

  • FTM here wondering which items are worth buying on Black Friday? I think the grandparents want to gift the big ticket items like stroller and carseat, which is awesome. What other items are worth trying to get a good deal on? So far the only thing that has come to mind is a baby monitor.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @silvergreen I was never pregnant for black Friday with dd so I am definitely going to watch the adds and see what deals I can score.  We borrowed things like rnp and a bouncer last time so I'm looking for deals on that kind of thing. Maybe a swing.  I'll be looking for monitors too.

  • @mimzgoy I just saw my OB/GYN yesterday and she recommended the sequential screening for me. She said that she considers me low risk, and that the MaterniT21 panel is recommended for higher risk patients, especially due to the cost. Not really sure what I want to do yet.

@doxiemoxie212 I know we discussed on another thread, and I think you're right in that the sequential screen is a smaller panel. The main things it tests for is trisomy 21, trisomy 18, and open neural tube defects. It is accompanied by the NT scan. Did your doctor ask you which you would like to do, or did they offer the MaterniT21 right off the bat? I think my other OB/GYN recommends the MaterniT21 to everyone, not just high risk patients, so I'm curious.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @silvergreen I immediately told my doctor I wanted to do NIPT and asked which they offered before she said anything. She said only mat21.  I just knew from stalking other bmbs I didn’t want to wait or have ambiguous results. This way I’ll have the results before my NT scan.
