Re: UO Thursday | 11.2

  • I'll go first... I don't understand lurking on other BMPs. Although I appreciate it immensely when there are ridiculous boards and people share them so I can creep and read and laugh! But I just don't get doing it randomly... I can barely keep up with this board. (That being said, for those who do it - please don't stop as getting those notifications to go see board x is the highlight of my day.)

  • I hate smartphones. Like, loathe them with a passion and wish they had never been invented. DH and I do not own them, our cell phones have buttons and do not access the internet. I have a strict no phones rule in my presence for friends and family, and if someone takes their phone out while we are visiting/having dinner/watching something or whatever I will leave (excepting something like work or a spouse with an urgent situation or emergencies).

    This.
  • I have a feeling this is going to be a very un-popular opinion... but...

I don't like dogs. Or cats for that matter.

I think my problem is that most of the pet owners I know are super inconsiderate/bad pet parents and it frustrates me, makes me never want to own a pet, and kind of makes me resent those people who bring their pets everywhere with them.
I'm allergic to dogs and cats. My 2 year old also has a strange reaction to dog saliva when he gets licked and yet... many of my family members own a dog and they all think it's just fine to bring their dogs to other people's houses for family functions (including to the homes of non-pet owners where people  who have an allergy will be). It makes me want to skip family functions or leave immediately when we get there and I see that theres 5-6 dogs running around.

My 87 year old grandmother's bday was last week and the whole family came to her house. She's very old, diabetic and on dialysis. So all my cousins AND my sister who has a brand new untrained puppy...brought their dogs to her 1200 sq ft home. None in crates and let them run amok. I got jumped on by one of the dogs, which prompted us to leave early, my son's face was covered in hives so we had to Benadryl him and my sister's puppy shit on the floor of the house. Maybe I'm alone in my thinking here...but unless there is some super good reason... why couldn't all your dogs stay home for the hour or two you'd be away? None of these family members live super far away... if you have a new puppy...either don't come or someone drives the 10 mins home to let it out etc. etc. Along these same lines... my step MIL is a vet. Her dogs are covered in ticks, their teeth are rotting out of their head and they smell terrible. Plus they jump and make my kid cry. And they get pissed that we don't visit them ever but like...you're inconsiderate dog owners so why am I pumping myself and my kid full of meds to come hang out with you?

I know this is an 'animal loving' crowd so I'm fully prepared for the flaming. I think they're cute...but they make me sneeze and if you KNOW they make me sneeze...why can't you be consider and not bring them to other's houses or put them in another room/crate them for the short period of time we'll be over. Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to doing Thanksgiving, Xmas, etc. and already told several family members we won't be coming to the holiday if there will be 5 dogs there. My sister is the newest pet owner and by far the worst offender. She is already trying to get me to agree to have her dog at MY house for my son's birthday in June. Just no.
  • @amb929 I love dogs (clearly, I have two), but I do agree with you about those dog-owners! There is such a thing as a responsible dog-owner and those people are not it! I would never bring my dog to a house without permission, and I won't even ask permission; if they volunteer "Hey, bring your dogs!" then maybe we will. But I wouldn't just show up with them or ask "Can I bring my dogs?" because that's impolite. You're well within your rights to ask the dogs not be around if you or your family members have an allergy and they should understand. What I hate is dog owners who think "but my dogs are precious!" (not unlike parents who think everyone thinks their kids are precious) and acts like that, imposing them on others' houses. Gives the rest of us a bad name. And ew to your step MIL. She should know better! Those dogs must be miserable.

@precious88 I love my smartphone and am in awe we have computers in our hands now, but what you're describing is having good manners. No one should have a phone out to text or chat when with other people (except emergencies), whether or not it's a smart phone or flip phone. I hate when I go out with my friends and my one friend has her phone on the table, just waiting for a call or text. Oh, am I not your first choice of entertainment tonight? Someone else will take priority if they decide to contact you? And I have a friend (who is quickly becoming just an acquaintance) who will come to a party and will literally sit by the wall outlet with her phone plugged in, looking at her phone the entire time (one time she joined me and another friend on a road trip and she plugged her phone into the car charger and stared at it for 3 hours in the car, not conversing with us at all. That was the last time I included her in any of my plans). Sadly, we love her husband but can't invite the husband without the wife so we just deal with it, but when it comes to girls' nights she gets left out. Not like she would notice what we were doing anyway....

  • @amb929 I agree with @eggplantface. As a pet owner, seeing bad pet owners makes me furious! But I know good pet owners are out there as I'm one of them! When we first got our pup, my step MIL told us to bring her over for family dinner so everyone could meet her. The next week, I asked if they wanted her to come back (and they did). The following week, I asked again. Step MIL finally said, "She is always welcome." and that was the end of it. If for some reason we can't bring her (a visitor with an allergy for example), she tells us.

My MIL is on the bad pet owner side... she brings her dog everywhere, without asking, including to our house after we've told her not to (although we have a dog, her dog is badly behaved and destroys stuff). It's infuriating. He's ruined the weather stripping on our door (she had to pay to replace it) and many a cat toy. She actually said to me once, "Oh, but there's cat toys laying around everywhere, so he thinks he can play with them." Um, well, maybe you need to teach him not to grab everything he sees, and also how to "drop it" upon request. We have 3 cats, so yes, we have cat toys laying around. Our own dog manages just fine because she's been well trained.

    This.
It’s like, isn’t your board talking about these same issues? If not, go start the discussion! Plus, sometimes you are just re-saying what one or two people have already said.
  • I agree with the PP on the dog issue @amb929.  I am clearly a dog lover but would never bring my dogs somewhere they weren't invited!!  We don't bring our 17 year old dachshund anywhere with kids even if he is invited.  He is blind and deaf and is not a huge fan of kids he doesn't know.  It's stressful for him too.

Irresponsible dog owners are the worst.  The dog misbehaves bc they don't control the situation and blame the dog.  Chuck was bitten pretty bad at the dog park (8 stitches inside the wound and 12 staples on the outside) bc of an irresponsible owner.  The woman was telling everyone in the dog park to be careful around her dog bc he was aggressive and a biter.  She even told one woman she shouldn't bring her two well behaved children to the park bc of dogs like hers.  Chuck was happily running with 4 other dogs and got bit.  DH had to run in and pick him up to get him away from the dog.  If I knew who she was and could prove it was her dog I would have sued her for our vet bill.
  • @eggplantface and @idawngirl781 I'm glad that responsible, good pet owners exist. I wish I had experience with them. My sister who has been a dog owner for 1.5 weeks is turning out to be the WORST. She apparently spoke on my behalf to another family member without my knowledge about the dog like making fun of us for not wanting to bring an allergic child near her new puppy etc. and is being super unreasonable about bringing not being able to bring her pet places because we will be there. I suspect her awful bf is part of the reason. He's changed her as a person for the worse (not that she was a great person to begin with).
She told my aunt her bf can't come to a surprise bday party in a few weeks cause he has to stay home with their dog and it's my/my son's fault he can't be there. And now my aunt is calling me and complaining about my kid, and trying to 'work something out' so the puppy can come. I'm kinda infuriated at this point. She's bringing the dog to xmas, which means my mom can't spend time too much time with her grandson before he goes into a medication coma and we have to leave, she's bringing it to xmas eve which means we probably have to stay home. 3 houses with pets back to back to back on xmas eve/day probably isn't going to work for us.  I get that the dog is important to her now but it's annoying because in the week and a half she's had the puppy, she has been covertly contacting my family members to complain about my son's allergy and make me feel unwelcome at family functions cause "I'm ridiculous and don't want him to be around dogs" uhh...sorry?

That is TERRIBLE! I am surprised people like this are allowed to own pets. Then again, I think my problem with dogs probably stems from a negative childhood experience with a neighbors dog. When I was 5, my neighbors dog bit a woman in front of our house. I watched the incident from our picture window, yelled for my mom and she called an ambulance. That neighbor was well respected in the city and three more people had to be bitten by his dog before they finally did something about it. After that dog was put down, they went and got a puppy... which they trained to also be violent and it was like a never-ending cycle. I remember not even being able to ride my bike in the neighborhood for fear I would be bitten by their dog. It was the worst and it probably has a lot to do with my feelings about animals as an adult.

It's nice to see that a lot of people ARE responsible pet owners and not jerks like I'm accustomed to. I have one friend with two pit bulls and she's said the same thing, she wouldn't ever bring my dog to someone's home even if it's invited because it's more stress on her.

I don't lurk much, and didn't in my previous BMB. It's also not really a thing on other forums' due date clubs. And ain't nothing new or hasn't been hashed out ad nauseam. Same ol' same ol'.

As for pets, I like the idea of dogs and think they can be pretty cute, but have little desire to have one as a companion. I'm a cat person. We have three. Part of that may be a personality thing. H and I are introverts, as are our older two, and we're definitely more into having feline companions.

  • It's a dog, not a baby. Kennel it.
This.  We have multiple options for dog sitters when we need to leave town so that we don't have to bring them with us.
  • I literally have never brought my dogs anywhere, and we don't even have allergies in the family. I can't imagine being that inconsiderate with family members who have allergies. I'm so sorry your family is so thoughtless @amb929

  • @amb929 We live in an apartment that has super strict pet rules for anything not in a tank. I love it.  I like dogs, but not enough to ever own one... I just can't commit that much energy and care to something that isn't human. Plus, unlike a baby, they aren't going to grow up to learn how to take a bath by themselves, brush their own teeth, etc etc.

I don't mind other peoples' pets outside or at their own houses..  I just never want one myself and have to wash my hands immediately after petting one. Lol
  • I have two boys, dogs. They are my babies. But they stay home and we respect people who don't like dogs. I do call them fur babies. What Does bother me is when my in laws or others  don't acknowledge that they exist.
  • We have 3 dogs and it’s pretty normal to show up with your dogs in my family. When we stay with other family members we all just bring our dogs, but we’re all dog people and no on is allergic.
  • My UO: I couldn't care less if DH and I dtd again any time soon.  My app keeps saying "extra blood flow may increase sexual pleasure" and "libido is likely increased"... Bah humbug. It's not bad or painful, I just want to lounge and do nothing. I am exhausted.
    Preach!
  • @amb929 I am on your side! I'm allergic to pretty much every animal but still would not want any pets! I don't want to clean up dog poop or a kitty's litter. Just my opinion!

Italso really bugs me when people bring their pets when they weren't invited! Especially when they live 10 minutes away and could just kennel them for the couple hours! My parents and all 3 of my siblings have pets but all live on Farms so they have tones of room outside for them to roam around!
  • We would never bring our pets to anyone else's house unless specifically requested to,  and i still don't know if we would.  That sends very rude and presumptuous to bring a pet to someone else's house.  And i wonder what size balls these people have request to bring them  to an allergic persons house per infer that the pets address more precious than a child.

We actually go out of our way to put all pets outside and clean extra in our own home if a family member or friend with an allergy is coming to our house,  just as we would prepare a meal with special options for someone with a food allergy visiting.

@AMB129 all of those people in your post need a hard tongue lagging for there incredibly rude and insensitive behavior,  your sister,  aunt mil all of them.  That was in credibly rude to your grandmother,  to you and your son.

@ldawngirl I'll admit to lurking in other boards (i spend a lot of time hurrying up to wait on some days), but i generally Dobt comment unless i see something i feel is obvious or importance that no one mentioned,  or do something drastically different than the other posters and want to let ftm's know the other way is okay to.

H said he was looking forward to when my libido would increase, and keeps asking when that's going to happen, and I told him "Sweetie, that never happened, and I believe at 6+ months now that ship has sailed." Oh he was so sad. I also told him that while I am still down for a weekly bang sesh, pretty soon I will be too uncomfortable to do it at all. I just ache all the time. I've been having a lot of sex dreams (way more than normal), but that hasn't translated into waking libido.

I have them about exes a lot and also I had one with DH but it was really bad and awkward. +1 for no increase in my libido, but I am also on pelvic rest and I do feel really guilty because I feel like I should be getting it in now before the baby comes. DH has been a saint considering I have been on pelvic rest more often than not this pregnancy/conception.

  • Just a general thanks to all who responded to
my unpopular opinion on pets... my family sucks sooo much. I was hoping I wasn’t being crazy or hormonal and hearing so many dog owners confirm that I’m not being irrational really helps me prepare for the future and trying to deal with the inconsiderate people I unfortunately have to see regularly this holiday season. You ladies rock!

    YES! This.
  • As a dog owner, I agree with others that irresponsible dog owners make me angry, for so many reasons, one being that it's really unfair to the dog.  It's not the dog's fault that no one has trained it, or that it is scared in situations its people force it into and then might get aggressive.

We bring our dog, Lucy, with us to my parents' (to play with their dog), and my ILs, but we ask before bringing her every time.  My MIL has said it's always fine, but we tend to ask just to check.  My parents' dog is older and has some medical needs, and is not always up for (dog) company, and we completely respect that. I think it's all about being considerate, like others have said!
