Stripping membranes..

Today I am 39 weeks and had my doctors appointment this morning. I am only 1cm dilated and 25% effaced but she asked if I wanted my membranes stripped. I was like, why not! It was pretty uncomfortable, I'm sure due to squeezing in the 1cm hole lol But just curious if anyone had any luck with this working? Especially at such little dilation?

Re: Stripping membranes..

  • I've had my membranes stripped with two babies. I went into labor that night both times. I was only at like 1 cm each time, but my cervix was "soft ". Good luck!

lurking from Dec 17.....I had this done with my last pregnancy at 38 weeks. I was maybe 2 or 3 cm, so a little bit more than you. I went into labor 36 hours later and had an easy delivery. I am going to opt for it again this time as I am hoping this birth is as quick and easy as my last. Best of luck!

Edited to add....I started having mild cramping/contractions immediately afterwards which continued throughout the following day. That is what leads me to believe the stripping is what helped move things along rather than just spontaneous labor.

  • I just talked to my midwife about that yesterday.  I'm thoroughly preparing myself to be induced (my mother was 2w late and induced for all 5 of us, and I take after her in just about everything genetic ...) and wanted to go through the different methods the birth center employs, particularly the non-medicinal ones.  She reiterated it all depends on how ripe the cervix is at any given stage - I guess there is a Bishop score? Takes into consideration effacement, dialation, softness, etc.  If it is needed, I am much more inclined to attempt the non-medicinal induction methods first to see if they work before I'm hooked up to a pitocin drip.

Speaking of non-medicinal, the Ina May Gaskin book actually was really informative of natural methods that can coax labor: breast/nipple stimulation, hip shimmying, intercourse, membrane sweeping, and (if sufficiently dialated) breaking the waters.
  • I had mine stripped on Tuesday, still have a baby in there. I'm more annoyed because for the past 2 nights I have woken up with strong painful contractions but they stop and I'm not sure they are doing anything. I was 2cm and soft when she did it but he seems to engage and then move back out of the pelvic.
  • Sounds like a pretty mixed bag, it's nice to hear everyone's experiences! So far I just have cramping and lots of discharge. Hoping to at least lose my mucus plug. I'll let you know if I have any luck! Good luck to you all :)
  • My yoga teacher had it done at a morning doctor's appointment and had the baby that evening. It can definitely work. She was 40 weeks though.

  • Lurking from Dec 17. I had my membranes stripped with my first DS it was uncomfortable but nothing worse than a Pap Smear and I started having contractions early the morning after and had a pretty easy and fast delivery! DS was born just over 24 hours after being stripped.
  • I had mine stripped twice with my first and it didn't lead to anything but cramping. That said, I'm going to do it again this Monday if my 11/2 baby still hasn't come. I'm too impatient to not at least give it a try.

  • I had mine stripped again when I was in labor.  It will release prostiglandins to soften the cervix and will cause cramping but like everything else we do, if your body isn't ready for labor it won't go into it.
  • I had mine stripped twice with my first son and it didn’t take either time. Then with my second son I didn’t quite make it to 38 weeks so never even got the chance lol. This time around I just had my 37 week appointment and asked about it then since I am being induced at 39 weeks I thought maybe they’d be willing to try it early but got a big fat no lol but oh well I will have them try it at my 38 week appointment. It would be nice to have that work instead of waiting for the induction.
  • My first strip didn't work and I had a second one this morning that I doubt will do anything as I've made no progress. Induction is scheduled for Sunday! Eek
  • 38w6d, 3rd baby, 1cm dilated and soft but not much effaced. I had a sweep yesterday at 2pm, an hour later after walking around Costco. Contraction started up about 7 mins apart and got down to 4.5 Mins apart lasting about 1 minute for several hours but not much pain just tight and pulling feeling in my low back. Got home went to bed, woke up with some pain but not progressing. I'm still contracting but very mild. Let's hope they don't stop!
  • My membrane sweep on Tuesday didn’t work but last night lost some mucus plug and had irregular contractions throughout the night and his morning and lost some more plug this morning but I don’t think it was from the sweep and still nothing solid as far as labor...getting another sweep tomorrow if nothing happens
