Music and Babies!

As I'm sure is true for many of you, music is a big part of my life and started with my parents sharing their favorite songs and styles of music with me. What songs are you guys most excited to either play or sing for your babies, either soon or once they're a little bit older?

Re: Music and Babies!

  • For me, I love Broadway musicals, so they'll be hearing a lot of show tunes! Also a lot of rock/alternative (especially from the 90's). My favorite song is American Pie, so definitely that... a few lullabies my mom sang to me when I was little... and so much more! I'm really excited to blast music in the car and sing along with my kiddos, just like we did when I was growing up.
  • Loading the player...
  • I second the musicals; I really like how the words tell stores. and Disney. Did I mention Disney? Also...Disney.
  • With DD, I mostly sing old hymns to her. But if we're listening to music, it's usually classic rock because she loves to dance to it. It's absolutely hilarious and she really doesn't do it with any other music genre.
  • @babybison I like the stories through music too and we'll definitely be listening to lots of Disney too!
  • In our house we offer a lot of musical diversity. My kids love the usual Disney tunes. But we expose our kids to basically all genres.
I'm a huge fan of 90s Seattle grunge music, since I'm Seattle born and raised. DH is also a big fan of it as well.. so there's a lot of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc in our house.
My parents were really into music so I grew up with everything from Metallica to Celine Dion and we do the same.
I dont like our local radio, it's mostly religion and country stations. I'm too lazy to put in CDs and our car isn't high tech with satellite radio or anything .. so all our car rides are tuned in to the Spanish radio station. The more mariachi band sounding, the better.. the only Spanish I know how to say is "I don't speak Spanish".. so I have no idea what they say in the songs.
I really enjoy it but DH calls me weird and complains. Lol.

  • Music makes up a huge part of me and DH's life, both together and we have our separate favorite genres. He's also a musician and has played in a band continuously since high school; he's so excited about playing his guitar or mandolin for our kids and trying to get them started early on instruments.

For my part I listen to about every kind of music, going back to the 20s and 30s. I'm really excited to share those tunes to give them kind of a music history/appreciation. Even if it's just passively because I'll continue playing my Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline, Doo-wop, Motown, funkadelic, 70s, 90s Hip-Hop, etc playlists while cooking/baking forever.

We are big music buffs too and when I look back I realize how much of my awesome taste in music (in my opinion) was influenced by the stuff my parents had on in the car when we were growing up!  I'm getting old because I pretty much hate everything on the Top 40 stations these days.

We we really want to buy some of the "Rockabye Baby" albums on iTunes but can't narrow down which ones we want the most (they are fun, plinky, lullabye versions of rock/pop songs).  We're definitely getting the Michael Jackson and Elton John ones... maybe Journey and Guns N Roses?

  • @elcd458 I'm the opposite. I hate hate hate what my dad played in the car growing up, which was essentially women like Celine Dion and Jewel. I think because there was never any variety, so we got sick of it really quickly. I only play korean music in the car, so maybe our kids will absorb a new language (we are not korean).
  • @elcd458 Ooh, if only I had more disposable income to spend right now, I would stock up on some rockabye baby albums. <3 We may still get the Hamilton one(s), if I can squeeze it into our quickly narrowing budget.

  • @elcd458 @kyrwyn we have also fallen in love with the rockabye baby albums! We need to figure out which one or two we want as we are also dealing with the narrowing budget as we move to a one income household.
  • @kyrwyn  Okay... I love Hamilton, but I went and listened to the sample songs from the rockabye baby album and I just don't think I could listen to that more than once lol. Honestly, I'm just planning to play them actual Hamilton (I believe there's a non-explicit version available on Spotify, but really I don't even care that much). I just won't play it when I'm trying to put them to sleep.
  • @aheqoefamily @kyrwyn Tip- if you are on Amazon Prime, you can stream the Rockabye baby albums for free on Amazon music.

  • @hellothere47 Ooooh. <3 Thank you! We most certainly are Prime (because of baby things).

@leilagphillips Yeah... after listening to a few more of them, I see your point. However, DH -- who is, let's call it "not the most musically literate" -- pointed out that in the super stripped down and very staccato "baby" interpretation he can finally here some of the different lines in the music that I keep explaining to him. So. Maybe they're good for fledgling music appreciation?  :D

@kyrwyn  Rap doesn't usually translate well on the Rockabye Baby albums but some of the Jay-Z and Kanye ones are awesome. Their version of Big Pimpin' is fantastic IMHO. I could totally see a baby thinking it was hilarious and amazing.

ETA: @hellothere47 YOU ARE MY HERO
  • @hellothere47 that is amazing to know! Thank you!!!!!!
  • I also love musicals! I've been to 3 so far during this pregnancy (Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Finding Neverland) and baby girl was moving around a ton so I think she likes them too. :)

My parents played a ton of music while we were growing up. They played stuff they liked, which was everything from motown/oldies to classic rock to current stuff. There were times I remember wanting to put music on and dance around the house rather than watching TV or a movie. I fully intend on playing a lot of music while my baby is growing up - and not just kids stuff, but artists that DH and I like to listen to. We go to a lot of concerts and love a lot of music, and I pray that my kids will too.

  • @peachy13 I went to see Oklahoma about a month ago and mine were also moving and kicking up a storm through the whole show! They were also very active when I went to a Goo Goo Dolls concert in August.

We also always had a wide variety of music playing in my house (and the car) when I was growing up and I plan to do the same thing. I'm actually planning to make a playlist for while I'm in labor, so they could be born with music playing!

  • Never heard of rockabye albums until here, and I just listened to the blink-182 on youtube...idk if I could listen to that style for too long. It feels like you're stuck in a blue's clues episode or something.
  • I'm with @babybison and @leilagphillips - I could not listen to those rockabye albums! I mostly just play DD the regular songs, but if I wanted something more instrumental, I think I'd be seeking out the Piano Guys (https://thepianoguys.com/videos/ ) rather than the plinky versions.

  • @cait5413 And 2cellos! They play all the rock music beautifully. Hits you right in the feels.
  • @cait5413 @babybisonAnother alternative is the Vitamin String Quartet. Really beautiful string versions of rock and pop music.
  • @leilagphillips  I LOVE Vitamin String Quartet!  I was just at a wedding where they did the seating of the mothers to some crazy not-typically-wedding-appropriate song (can't think of what now-- You Shook Me All Night Long, maybe?) but it was VSQ so it worked. Haha
  • @elcd458 That's awesome. I actually first heard VSQ at a wedding. They played In Your Eyes and it was just beautiful.

  • I'm a big fan of Lindsey Sterling - most covers she has are from movies or musicals, and the rest is original violin/techno. Again, something DD loves to dance to (watching an 18 month old rock out to classically influenced techno violin music is super entertaining).
  • @skcobb I'll have to check her out. And the part about your DD sounds adorable!
