Calla. Thoughts?

what is your first thought? Would she be mistaken too much for all the Kayla’s, Cali’s, Kalee’s?
do you think pronunciation would be an issue? I would think with calla lilies it should be common sense, but I also don’t want her to be correcting people her whole life.

I’m really liking this name, though.

ETA
MN will be Ruth. Does Calla Ruth flow?

Re: Calla. Thoughts?

  • i love calla! its on my list but more a guity pleasure bc DH wont give me more than a "maybe."  I think calla ruth flows fine with the number of syllables.

  • Thank you!
I still haven’t asked dh what he thinks, yet. He’s impossible when it comes to names

  • I don't personally like it, but I don't think I'd side eye it.
  • I would like it a lot more if all the Kaylee, Kayla, Kaelen's weren't everywhere.

My first thought is Calla Lilies. I don't associate it with Kaylee, but Callie does come to mind. I think it's ok though. There are so many names that are similar to one another.

Although I like the name Ruth, I personally would do a longer name middle with Calla, like Elizabeth.  But if you love Ruth, or if it's a family name, I think Calla Ruth is fine.

My thought is that Calla is a lot less popular than the Kayla variations. I don’t want her to be called Callie or Cayla. I guess my question is more directed towards pronunciation and if it’s something people would struggle with? I don’t want my daughter to be a victim of the waning skill of literacy.
I’m not concerned if someone likes it or side eyes the name, but I also don’t want her to spend a lifetime correcting people because they are so used to Callie’s and kaylees.

Ruth is after my grandmother and is non-negotiable.

If that's the case, then I think pronunciation issues for this name should be low. I knew the correct way to pronounce the name right away without thinking about it.
  • I love Calla. It reminds me of Princess Calla on the Gummy Bears cartoon :-)

    I’ve never seen that show
  • I don't really like it and can't pinpoint why.  I think it sounds incomplete to me because I hear Calla and think Calla Lilly.
  • I think most people will recognize that Calla should be pronounced like calla lily. I would be more concerned about people trying to nickname her Callie. When she gets older she may decide she likes being called Callie. Something to think about in case you really don't like Callie.

If she preferred to be called Callie later on that wouldn’t bother me
  • I don't think people would have a problem pronouncing but I don't think it goes well with Ruth. Like PP said, it needs a longer, formal middle name. So if you're set on Ruth maybe a different fn is needed.

  • I like Calla Ruth, I think its pronunciation is pretty intuitive.
  • Very pretty! Love it with Ruth
  • Thanks everyone! I ran it by DH and he is actually considering the name. I agree that Calla would sound better with a longer mn, but Ruth isn’t negotiable and we may go ahead with Calla Ruth. We don’t use our son’s middle name really at all, so a perfect flow isn’t really a must for us. Plus it’s the only name we’ve agreed to put on our “hospital” list lol
My main hang up was pronunciation, but it doesn’t seem like that’s something I will need to worry too much about.
  • I think of the lily.

    Calla Lily.

It seems like a made up name.  Maybe Callie instead?

  • I wouldn't think pronunciation will be an issue. I think Calla is unique enough, but totally recognizable and easy to prounounce. Seriously a beautiful name!

If it’s a legitimate name, I don’t care if it sounds “made up”. No to Callie as a given name.

edited to change “it” to “up”.

Agree. It’s very much a real name. Callie is a nickname, not a full name. How is that better??
    Waiting for #3!

  • I love Calla.  It was one of the names I was thinking of :)   And there shouldn't be any issues with pronunciation.  It can't get much easier, lol.
