NBR: Anyone a hair stylist??

I'm wondering if I paid my friend enough, please let me know.

I'll try to make this short:  My stylist has become a good friend over the years and is now my neighbor.  So I asked her if she'd do my hair at her house (because the salon prices were raised again and just too much for me)  She said sure because she does this for a couple of her friends.

so last night she did my highlights and I asked her how much and she said "whatever".  well, she wouldn't give me a price.  So I asked her what her cut was with the salon and she said 50%.  Highlights at the salon are $120.  So I paid her $75.  I thought that was good, but now I'm worried I didn't pay her enough...

what are your thoughts?  Was this enough? Took about 1 hour 15 minutes... thanks =)

  • I am curious as to what the cost is for the highlights, supply wise I mean.  I would think that its reasonable, but I am not sure...
Not sure what direction we are headed. Either way, I am up for the ride.

  • hmmm, I'm not sure of the supply cost.
  • I used to work in my cousin's salon in college.  She always charges us like 50% off salon prices.

when I get cut and HL she charges me around 60-75.

  • giving away our dirty lil secret and this pisses me off now that I have to pay for my hair to be done..... I have my esthetician lic. so i'm not a hair stylist but DH and I did own a salon before we moved and I had three stylist that worked for me, let me tell you our cost for highlight was about $10. maybe $20 depending on what brand they are using. Color tubes are about $11-18 and developer maybe another $20. Mind you developer, bleach, foil, that all lasts for multiple clients. It does take time to do the services but come on. What really ticked me off the last time I had my hair colored I needed an extra tube of color she charged me $25 now I used to buy this *** and it is only $10. But in our industry mark up is how you make the big bucks. I laugh when I go past beauty supply stores real ones not Sallys and see the price on products. I get to go to the wholesale stores since I have my lic. and I pay half or less than that when I go. I'm sooo glad other wise I would be having to use store brands on my hair. But $75 is decent for your hair you should have added a tip!
  • For the color/highlights itself, it's maybe $15 in supplies...if that.

  • I'm a hairstylist, and I do quite a bit of family and friends at home. For highlights and a cut I would normally ask for anywhere from 60-80 depending on hair length and what not. So I think what you gave her was a good amount. Hope that helps!

    Not helpful.

  • she didn't do a cut, just highlights, and I did include a $15 tip.  I paid her the $60 that she would have been paid if I went into the salon (since her salon owner takes half)

what I didn't account for was the supplies, and I will next time.  thanks ~
