International Moms to Be

Anyone here living abroad outside of their home countries, away from family? Maybe we can be another little support group here!

Re: International Moms to Be

  • An American living in England here.

  • @kristib1027 so glad to see someone else in a similar situation as me! I'm an American, married to a Brit, who lives in South Korea. Have you noticed any differences in maternity procedures there?
  • @futuremrshay I'll be having my baby in an American hospital, my husband is military. They recently shut it down though for repairs and were sending woman off base, a lot took advantage of birthing pools and alternative birthing options since most base hospitals don't have that. I have seen it's become a norm to let moms have their golden hour after birth and delay baths and cord clamping and such. I had my first baby in the states which didn't do that and really pushed me to let them take my daughter to the nursery so I could rest, my second was born in Guam and that was an amazing experience since I felt I got more of a say of what was going to happen.  Not a lot of unnecessary intervention from hospital staff and letting that bond happen right away is such an advantage. a British friend of mine who had her baby early and at a local hospital said even with premies they try to do that initial bonding time. Placing baby on mother right away unless they absolutely must intervene. It will be interesting to know how your experience goes!
  • Well I would take any advice being as it's my first and away from home... I'm thinking my mom would fly in but I can't be sure. Being in the military helps ease the differences I'm sure (thank you for your families service)!
  • I'm Australian living in USA. I also went through infertility treatments here so it's been quite the sampler of the USA medical system. I appreciate the high quality lab, and clinic, my RE is great (but the others in the clinic are not). But the whole system here is crazy and difficult to navigate, thankfully friends have helped us.
Im looking at a home birth here to avoid the hospital interventions. Since it's my first child and first medical experience here I don't have much to compare to, though our families don't understand the process here so it's been exhausting sharing that. And the IVF doctor we saw in Australia when on vacation for a second opinion was $200 no insirance for a 1.5 hour chat.
I'm also thankful for great PGS testing here for embryos and the ability to know my 2x babies genders which is illegal in most other countries (incl Aus).
Parenting and mothering conversations and styles vary a lot here too, I find similar people to me, but the overall ideas are quite culturally different.
    Pregnancy Ticker Anniversary
  • Most of all I REALLY miss my family. We were going to wait to have kids until we moved back to be near family, but then couldn't resist. Then we end up in infertility treatments and IVF in a foreign country, it brought us closer together and we chatted to ours mum's (moms) really often so they gave us support despite the distance.
Now after this hard journey particularly, we wish we could share the pregnancy and baby with them more. We'll be moving back in a couple years

  • I am an American living in South Korea. My husband is Korean, and this will be my second time giving birth in this country.
  • @bumpemma yeah, it's an interesting feeling being in a different place while going through this all new experience. We're teachers and tend to move every 2-3 years for a new country (next year we'll be looking) and we hope to move to the US in maybe 5 years. I'm glad you have found some positives in the US healthcare system and thankful the IVF has worked out for you!! Might your family fly over for the birth?

@MrsBuddle Where do you live in South Korea? I'm living in Daejeon and will have my initial appointment tomorrow. Congrats on #2!!

Thanks for commenting on this forum. I think as our pregnancies move forward we may be able to support one another, being international!
