Baby Names

Forrest- Handsome? Or Gump?

my husband and I are pregnant with boy #2. My first is named Barrett and I LOVE his name. We usually call him Bear or BearBear. I loved the name Griffin for #2 and my husband agreed but then started thinking of a relatives dog with the same name

Re: Forrest- Handsome? Or Gump?

  • I actually really like Forrest and find it pairing well with Barrett. I think of the MMA fighter or Whitaker.  I don't really think of Gump and it wouldn't be enough for me to vote no on the name. My kids have a Forrest at their school and to my knowledge the Gump reference isn't a thing and I can only imagine it would even less of one by the time your kid is school aged. It's not really a movie that their age will really grow up with.

  • Forrest was our second choice for a boy (our first is Landon). Love the name, although finding a nickname can be difficult. I think it's a fantastic choice!
  • I like it.  The Gump connection is there but not the first thing that comes to mind.
  • I like it and think you can get away with it. I do primarily think of Gump but it's not a super strong association anymore and I can totally see a little kid rocking that name.
  • I definitely thought of Gump right away, but I think that that association would fade quickly if I were interacting with a real person instead of seeing it written on a computer screen.

  • There was a Forrest in my daughter's preschool class last year. I have a cousin named Forrest so Gump isn't an initial thought for me. Forrest Whitaker probably comes to mind before Gump.

  • The first thing I think is "Run Forrest, Run!"
Despite the movie - I think Forrest is aweful, it's just completely not my style.
  • Love Forrest! My mind doesn't immediately go to Forrest Gump. I have an uncommon name that is used in a very famous movie and I sometimes get 'is it after movie X?'. I say no and that's it. So the Forrest Gump association would be NBD to me.

  • I like Forrest. Every time I've heard it as a name, I think of a forest, never Gump. (And I find that to be a positive association.)

That's what I think of also. I want something earthy but not totally crunchy, if you know what I mean.

Well, I appreciate the honesty but your "style" doesn't really help me much. It IS our style. That's why I won't be sharing my decision with friends or family, everyone thinks their style is what others should adhere to.
  • First, I love Barrett. Love! I also really love Griffin. I'm not as crazy about Forrest (and it may be the Gump thing, although I'm not sure). Have you considered:

    Dalton
    Preston
    Sutton
    Cameron
    Milton
    Ellis
    Gavin
    Holden
    Lowell

  • Funny I never knew the MMA fighter, so I googled MMA Forrest... Forrest Griffin, my two top names!  Love it!

Sorry, but if you have been on the Bump for awhile, especially this board people will say that they don't like a name and back it up with (NMS) not my style and that's what I did. Sorry, you asked for opinions, I gave mine.

Gump definitely comes to mind. But also remember in the movie the character said he was named after an ancestor, Nathan Bedford Forrest...a real person who was a lieutenant general in the Confederate Army and member (and possibly a grand wizard) of the KKK. It's an obscure enough reference that most people probably won't make, but something to be aware of.

  • I absolutely thought, "I'm Forrest, Forrest Gump" the very second I read the title of your post.  It's obviously your kid and you can do what you want, but you need to be prepared for people saying things like, "Run, Forrest, run!" and "Are you stupid or something?" to him for the rest of his life.

  • I don't associate it with Gump. It's actually a name I have considered myself. You may get the occasional reference but I don't think it will be a common occurrence.  As mentioned above, the generation won't really know the movie. It will be more adults, to whom you can explain the movie had no part in your baby's name.
  • First thought Gump, second thought Whittaker. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.

  • 'Run Forrest Run' is the first thing that came to mind. I also think it is a little to matchy with the name Barrett (which I really like)
  • I have a friend named Forrest. He goes by Woody. I think it is a nice name. If kids want to make fun of someone, it doesn't matter what their name is. Plus that movie is from our generation, not out kids'.
