October 2017 Moms

Big baby

I had an ultrasound this week and they said baby is measuring big. I ha e never had a baby over 8 pounds. And they are telling me this baby is 5 pounds at 32 weeks. But I have heard from so many moms that their guess can be off by 1-4 pounds. How accurate is their guess?

Re: Big baby

  • The tech told me that as the pregnancy progresses, the baby's measurements get more inaccurate. They are more accurate in the earlier stages. She said there is usually a -1/+1. So, if they estimate 5 lbs, the baby is most likely between 4-6 lbs range.

  • It REALLY depends on the technician and equipment. I go to a high risk/maternal fetal medicine office who has their own technician who is very accurate with size estimates etc (according to my standard OB) My OB stated that she trusts their measurements more than the "avg" because they are very good at what they do...however she added other technicians do not have the same record of being accurate and are often off by 1+/-lb

  • I wanted to add....my son measured 5lb2oz @32weeks....and I am worried since I have had 2 other sonside who were just over 6lbs!!

  • One more thing I forgot to add...I have had many many us and growth scans and baby has been maintaining the same growth pattern. So it may be more accurate further along in pregnancy if you have had other US and not just a random one at 32 weeks. If that makes sense.
  • My little girl measured at 4.5 pounds at 32 weeks, and I have another growth scan at 36 coming up in 2 weeks so she should be around 6.5 pounds if she gains .5 a week  I got told up to 5 pounds or so at 32 weeks is right on track and healthy. Some babies slow down and only gain .5 in 2 weeks near the end. It depends. You'll be great!
  • My baby is measuring big as well,  in the 90's as far as percentile.  I had my last ultrsound at 34 weeks and he was already 7 pounds 3 Oz. I am now 36 and I'm sure he's grown but have to wait another 2 weeks for confirmation (if I make it that far). They think if it stays in until my October 8th date he'll be 10+ pounds.  My first child was 6 pounds 11 oz. I too go to a specialist. I guess it depends on the equipment.
  • I'm 37 weeks and just had an ultrasound with a high risk specialist.  He told me my baby is weighing around 8 to 8.5 lbs.  I'm 5'0 so you can imagine how big i look.  I really hope i can have a natural birth and have a smooth delivery and healthy baby.  3 more weeks to go...
  • 36 week US updated. So baby is maintaining the growth pattern...he was 5lb 2oz @32 weeks. Now at 36 weeks 7lb 11oz. So he is growing more that the 1/2lb week avg. I'm a bit freaked. I know you hear the sayings your body won't make a baby bigger than you can handle...or your body knows what to do.  I had two prior children and they were only just over 6.5lb and it was a crime scene. I had tore badly with both. Not fun.
  • Update from me. I commented on the thread before. At 32 weeks my baby girl was measuring 4.5lbs. At 36weeks she should have been 6.5lbs. Well I had my LO at 35.5days and she weighed 7lbs11oz. My big baby. Jist goes to show it's never accurate!
  • My doctor guessed 8 lbs and my son was 9lbs 11oz.  So almost 2 pounds off.  He was 8 days overdue.
  • 39 week check up. Baby’s estimated weight is 8 lbs!  Wish me luck!
  • My first was estimated to be average at 7-7.5lbs. She was 5#9 and SGA.

This is one is estimated to be slightly on the smaller side but she feels bigger to me. My due date is next week - we shall see!

In a a study of 2nd time mothers and baby size they compared ultrasound, experienced OB, and maternal estimation. Mothers were more reliable- by far.

  • At my 36 week ultrasound yesterday this one is measuring 7 lbs 3 oz.  If I go to my induction date she will either be 9 lbs 3 oz or 10 lbs 3 oz.
  • For whatever it's worth, I know women who've had bigger babies and swear that they had less tearing compared to their smaller babies due to the actual birth going a bit slower and having a little more time to stretch. My 6.5 lb. baby did a number on me, and then a friend of mine had an 10 lb. baby without a stitch.
  • Three of mine were over 9lbs and the birth wasn't bad at all.  I think people just get scared when they hear big babies.  I am totally ok with a 9 lb baby because once each of them hit 10 lbs they were sleeping through the night (with our pediatrician's blessing).
