35 and over Moms - August

I didn't see an August thread, so I thought I'd start one.

How are you doing?

I had my NT u/s yesterday.  Everything is looking good.  So awesome seeing the LO moving all over the place.  I'm measuring a full week ahead so my new due date is 2/15.  My dr said she's noticed that AMA moms tend to have worse nausea.  Her advice - hang in there.  Also, she said that I'd be monitored more closely the last month and a half and she wouldn't let me go more than a day past my due date.

It's weird, I haven't felt like an AMA mom because the IVF I went through already makes me high risk, so they're monitoring me closely because of that and my age, I guess. They just don't mention my age much. I'm measuring 5 days ahead but the tech said that's within "normal" range so they're not concerned.

I'm feeling better than I was but still get random bouts of nausea and heartburn, flip flopping between the two throughout the day. And last night I got majorly winded walking up the stairs.

My next appointment is in two weeks, a screening for spina bifida.

I think there was an August post, but it's probably pages back by now so I'm fine posting on a new one.

@olitwinturbosnprincess That's interesting about the nausea in AMA moms.  I was 33 throughout my pregnancy with DS and had only mild nausea and this time around I'm 36 and it was pretty debilitating.  And I keep thinking it's going to go away, but then it shows back up!

I'm having major issues sleeping lately.  When my nausea was really bad I was taking Unisom and B6 at night which meant I woke up to pee and then fell right back to sleep.  Now that it's not as bad I quit taking them I wake up around 2 every night and don't fall back asleep until at least 4.  Last night DS woke up crying around 3 so I brought him into our bed which meant I got even less sleep thanks to the kicking and headbutting and the fact that he always ends up sleeping sideways between DH and myself.

The original August post is buried a few pages back probably.  No worries.  Our LO was super active at our NT scan as well!  Hard to believe all that is going on and I can't feel it.

I'm on the regular once a month schedule for now but like @olitwinturbosnprincess I will go more frequently at the end.  My doctor said probably twice a week.

I have my regular 16 week appointment Thursday and an appointment with  Fetal Maternal Specialist right after due to my age.  The nurse said since all my genetic testing was low risk I probably won't see them again but I have to go once.  They will follow my pregnancy from my doctors notes.  That should be interesting.

I had my NT scan a few weeks back also. All looked great. Have my 14 week appt this week as well. So excited to have that check. Always get antsy between visits.

Interesting hearing all the  differences between doctors. My dr didn't say anything about coming more at the end. As of now anyway. But we are looking at possibly inducing at 39 weeks for personal reasons. Anyone else feel this is going faster then first pregnancies?! I'm thankful for that. And hoping the 3rd tri doesn't drag!

So far, so good! Prenatal labs and genetic testing are all normal/low-risk. I've been using a pregnancy pillow for the last week, and it has helped me sleep better. Not peeing every night, either!

I do bloodwork for Spina Bifida this week. I'll be seeing the Ob/GYN every 4 weeks through December, every 2 weeks in January, then weekly in February.

Sometime in the next few weeks, I'll take a look at all of the childcare/new parent classes that the hospital offers. The hospital also offers a free orientation and tour of the L&D and birthing suites, where to park, etc.

Things are going pretty good for me. Most days I forget I'm pregnant, which is a nice change from the first tri. NT scan went well, genetic testing came back with very low risk for everything.  Baby started kicking last week. I love feeling his little kicks.  Anatomy scan is scheduled for 9/20, at 20 weeks exactly. I'm not sure what my frequency of visits will be as I progress. My OB hasn't said anything yet. I hope I get one more US after the anatomy scan so I can bring my kids. I think seeing he baby on the screen will make it more real for them.

We have done very little to prepare for the baby.  The bedroom we need to use is still full of junk, stuff we've stored there since we bought the house six years ago and it's bad. The only thing we have bought is a stroller.

DS2 is getting really excited and has started calling his stuffed bunny his baby and giving it bottles and putting it down for naps. It's really cute. I hope he's this excited after the baby is born!

My OB doesn't treat AMA pregnancies different from any others unless/if there is a reason to. For that I am thankful.

I was dx with Fifth's Disease early in this pregnancy and have been getting more u/s in order to monitor baby for complications. They treated yesterday's as the A/S, even though we have that scheduled for after 20w. Like someone else mentioned, it's amazing he's moving around so much and I don't feel it.

We're waiting to hear back from the high risk OB who will look over yesterday's u/s, but things looked normal to DH, myself and the u/s tech. Hopefully that will be the case and we can move past the Fifth's Disease worry.

At my 14 week appt, the Dr. (one in the practice I hadn't seen yet) actually called my pregnancy "low-risk." It was the first time I breathed easy in awhile. I'm on a monthly sched now, too, and will go once a week towards the end. I will get my Spina Bifida bloodwork in 2 weeks.

@karcerplus3 I also have days/moments when I forget I'm pregnant, which is good, I guess. Then it always leads to the anxiety of "am I still pregnant??" And I need to take deep breathes and remind myself that it's all part of the process. Really, though, I'm looking forward to those kicks to give me some reassurance.

@BelhurstBride I've never heard of Fifth's disease.  What is that???

NT Scan and blood work all came back low risk. Have to go in for 2nd trimester bloodwork the week of Sept 1st & A/S is 9/29.  Have another regular Dr appt on the 31st & I'm not sure what that will entail. I'll be exactly 15 weeks then. Everything is so damn different from when my daughter was born 15 years ago! Don't know whether it's just my age or if it's like that for everyone now.

@chucksmom15, Parvovirus B19 is the other name.

It's a rash most school aged kids get. In kids it's a seemingly unexplained high fever, followed by a very distinguishable rash 2-3 days later. Most adults have had it and are immune.

In adults it's a bit more nasty, for me it was a feverish day with nausea and vomiting followed by a week of the most intense joint pain I've ever experienced. At the time I just assumed it was pregnancy related and it didn't dawn on me it was Fifth's Disease until one of DD1's classmate's mothers mentioned having had it and the joint pain.

It's a no big deal virus... unless your immunocompromised or pregnant. Then it's serious.

@BelhurstBride that must have been so stressful for you. Once you are past the 20 weeks, can you assume everything will be ok? Fifths Disease was doing the rounds at my son's daycare and my OB took it pretty seriously. But as I understand, while the risks are serious, they are relatively rare. I'm glad everything is looking good for you!

I feel good. Not very pregnant though! I look pregnant but no movement and no nausea etc. just hungry and short of breath. I have an anterior placenta again so don't expect to feel anything for a while. I am bummed because I had that last time and have been looking forward to feeling him/ her sooner! Guess not...

There is a test for spina bifida?  I feel like my Drs.  tell me nothing...  I have my a/s mid September,  and am on a once a month visit schedule for now,  after 30 weeks it goes to 2x a month and once a week after 36 weeks. I thunk this is routine for every patient in the practice. I've been feeling the lo for the past 3 days when I'm laying down and still.

I asked for a quad sceen, which covers spina bifida. They didnt initially mention the quad screen to me because apparently they dont do it often anymore because the nipt is more popular (2 different offices told me that).

I asked for it because my nipt came back with no answer twice so it stresses me out. I only got the genetic testing because im ama and insurance covered it... but now i kinda wish i was blissfully ignorant lol.

Does the nipt test for spina bifida? Or just for genetic markers? The quad screen tests for different things? I feel so uninformed now with how my Drs.  Practice operates...

NIPT does not test for spina bifida.  My nurse told me when I got my NIPT results that they can't test for that until later.  I think I'm having my test soon??  We're supposed to talk about it Thursday at my appointment.

@mamaof5already I felt pretty uninformed from my doctors office, too, actually. I think they tried to explain it to me, but it was a lot to process. NIPT screened for Downs and 2 diff chromosomal abnormalities... quad screen checks a couple other things. I'm bad at explaining, but I read about it HERE (thanks The Bump)! When I talked to the genetic counselor yesterday about all this, she did point out multiple times that the quad screen has about a 10% chance of false positives, so I just had to be aware.

As a side note, counselor also said that about 5% of women get the "untinterpretable" or "unreadable" results from the NIPT, and unfortunately I was in that camp, which is why I'm going for the quad screen. The only thing that tells you for nearly 100% sure about chromosomal abnormalities is an amnio, but I don't want to go that route if I don't have to.

Ok. I got it now.  I know that they check for spina bifida at the as at my office. I guess i could ask about the quad screen at my next appointment.

I lost a previous baby to spina bifida., my Dr.  Is very unconcerned about it,  but i am not.  My pregnancy afterwards i was considered high risk because of it,  but apparently not this time.

I'm sorry about your loss :-(
I dunno why I always feel kinda dumb asking so many questions about all the different testing... but they're the doctor (or nurse) so they should expect it, right. Like, I didn't actually know they check for spina bifida at the AS... but I haven't really talked to them much about it yet because mine isn't for another few weeks. (To be fair, I haven't done a lot of reading even though we have the What to Expect book. Maybe I should haha)

I did Maternal Fetal Medicine last week @fatted_calf.  The ultrasound was super detailed. They measured everything!  Everything looked good but I have to go back in October so they can see the ratio of amniotic fluid vs. his weight.  16 weeks was too early to get an accurate measurement on that.
  • Options
@chucksmom15 I'm nervously holding my breath for this ultrasound and trying not to worry over all the things they could possibly find wrong.  So happy to hear things looked good with your little one - that has to be such a feeling of relief!

I think something is wrong with my right side. I feel like the muscles are tearing, for lack of a better way to describe it. My right side has always been the side I get RLP and lately when I roll over in bed or get up from lying down it hurts really bad and I get the tearing sensation. This is my third so I'm sure my innards are in pretty bad shape. Debating on calling the nurse line.

I called. The nurse said it was probably just growing and stretching, however if it got worse to call. It happened again this morning but it's no worse than before. I'm keeping track so I can talk to the dr at my next appointment.

Welp, I had another SCH bleed over the weekend and it was a looooong wait until the Dr opened on Tuesday.

Met with MFM yesterday and had a detailed scan; kiddo still looks good and was kicking/punching/flipping up a storm.  The doctor is concerned about the septum in my uterus possibly causing pre-term labor or other complications so I was told no more long distance travel once I get back from an upcoming business trip.  I'm still on exercise restriction because of the bleeding but he said we'd reevaluate once I get to 23/24 weeks.  I'd very much like to get back to Zumba (although I'll switch to the low impact version) so I hope this thing heals up soon!

    How's everyone else doing?

Of course that happened to you over a holiday weekend @fatted_calf.  I'm sorry you had to wait!

Glad you got the scan with MFM.  Made me feel better to have a detailed idea of how everything is going.

AFM just exhausted and having trouble sleeping.  I think I am putting myself on travel restriction after our trip this weekend.  It's getting to be more of a pain than fun.  I would rather be hanging out on the couch with the dogs.

Ugh, @fatted_calf, I'm so sorry you had that scare! Glad you got to see the kiddo, though.

AFM, I'm trying to be patient. This is my longest stretch without hearing or seeing anything. I'm actually sitting in the waiting room now to get my Quad Screen blood work. We're traveling this weekend, but that's our last trip.
  • Options
@chucksmom15  You know, it seems like these bleeds always happen over the weekend.  That's how luck seems to work in my life.  :)  I've gotten to the same point about not wanting to do much traveling, even short distances.  I can tell I'm gearing up for winter hibernation already.

@babybro218 I hear you on the trying to be patient part. It seems harder than ever now b/c a lot of the symptoms are gone but I'm not feeling movement yet and things are so... quiet.  Sending you good vibes for the quad screen!

@fatted_calf so sorry to hear you are going through this!!
AFM I've been super exhausted but feeling better than I was for sure! We fly home for Christmas and I'll be about 32 weeks when we fly there and 34ish weeks when we fly back so that should be interesting with a toddler! Luckily my DH will be with me too!

It's so hard to be patient!  I feel the occasional flutter but otherwise it's just a waiting game until my next appt to hear the heartbeat.
Thankfully we don't have much planned for the next 6 months. A road trip to my ILs for thanksgiving (5 hours in the car with a 3 and 5 yr old!) but otherwise I'm staying home bound. I was supposed to go to Boston in January but flying at 37 weeks is a no go. I'd rather be snuggled up on the couch anyway.
