Prometrium Second-time offenders (I can move to another thread if wanted)

Anyone here ever been on prometrium before? I took it with my last 2 pregnancies (2010-2011) and I swear the pills have changed and I'm having the weirdest side effects from them. Nothing bad, just odd.

When I took them before, the were round capsules that were clear yellow (like vitamin E capsules, but completely round) and they were oral onlyRelated image

Now they're yellowish-cream, completely opaque, huge egg-shaped capsules that are for oral or vaginal use.

I feel like they're getting stuck in my throat no matter how much I drink when I take them (before bed) and I wake up every morning with this weird congestion that is isolated to my throat (no nose or chest) almost like it just sat there and dissolved. it takes like a half hour of hacking to get it to move enough to clear (TMI sorry) and then it's not like a really bad cold where you can cough anything up, but it doesn't feel like I swallow it, it's like it just goes away (mostly)

Am I crazy or has anyone else dealt with this?

  • I take them but mine are pink. When I took them orally (the first week) I was so dizzy I almost fainted. They also really upset my stomach.  Now I take them vaginally at night.  I actually think this is the cause of my spotting.  I stopped them for 2 days once I was told we MC'd and the spotting disappeared.  When I started taking them again, the spotting came back. I also think they mess with my bowel movements.

  • @justsuzie I should have mentioned I'm on 200 mg, I think the pink are 100 mg right? That's why I take them as I get into bed, it helped me avoid the dizziness and as long as I ate something close to bed time (something small like a piece of toast with peanut butter on it) then I avoided this stomach upset. This time though... I think I would take the stomach over feeling like I'm choking every morning.

I never thought about it causing spotting, but if it could upset you're stomach I see no reason that it couldn't irritate your cervix. Also, who makes something pregnancy and vaginally related any shade of pink/red? That's just cruel...

  • *lurking from April*

@justsuzie I've been on vaginal progesterone ever since 3 DPO, and when I switched to generic prometrium (to save money) I was given 100 mg redish-brown capsules. I thought I was spotting on these, but it turns out it was just the dye from the capsule - I even dissolved one on a panty liner just to be sure. Progesterone can irritate your cervix, but my guess is your "spotting" is just coloring from the capsule.

@ladystinson I agree that whoever thought to make vaginal suppositories any shade of red, pink, or brown should be fired.
  • I am on vaginal progesterone and my first ones were a bright pink-orange color and now my other ones are a darker pink.  I agree that it's just the dye coming off the capsules and not spotting.  I don't know why they would make the pills pink!  Come on, any other color that doesn't look like spotting would be awesome!

I'm on endometrin vaginal suppository at night - and I have an intramuscular progesterone shot in the rump every morning.
I've had the pink P-2 progesterone tablets in the past too.
Progesterone is the cause of some side effects but I'm not sure which ones.

  • I guess I need to count myself lucky that I'm taking it orally and haven't been given the injections yet (or the suppositories for that matter... you poor ladies...)
