I posted this on SAL but wanted to see if i can get any info here.
Ok, iv seen this talked about many times, but only described as a clotting disorder. I was reading an earlier post about it that also mentioned issues with folic acid absorbtion. Now im kinda in a panic and ready to cry. I googled it (bad i know) and have only read 1 article on it, but now im worried as shiit that maybe thats what I have but have not been tested for it.
Last time i was pg the baby had anencephaly ( a severe NTD ) and the only freaking thing drs could say is to take folic acid in the future!! But i was faithfully taking prenatels with folic acid in it!!! So i never quite got that. For this pg the dr has put me on FABB tabs, which iv read somewhere on here that some MTHFR people were taking.
Im afraid to keep reading the google info. If you have this, or have ANY info, symptoms, stories, ANYTHING, please share with me!! My next appt isnt untill next monday but i damn sure plan grilling the doc about it. if not kicking kicking his asss for not bringing it up! I remember even asking if there was any condition that causes folic acid absorbtion issues and i think i was told no.
sorry this ended up being so long. i know i may be over reacting but i dont know what i would do if this baby had a NTD too. and it always bothered me that no one had answers for me.

I hope I can give you some insight. Everyone has the MTHFR gene, only some people have the mutation. My entire family has the mutation as it is genetic.
I have homozygous MTHFR C677T which is the worst kind. Regular PNV is not enough folic acid by a long shot. Basically, this mutation prevents your body from absorbing folic acid and B vitamins. This in turn can raise your homocysteine levels which cause clots that can interfere with pregnancy.
To combat my MTHFR, I take baby aspirin (a mild blood thinner), a PNV, plus a vitamin that contains 5mg of folic acid plus extra B vitamins. Overall, I take over 6mg of folic acid.
Some doctors recommend Lovenox (blood thinner) injections during and after pregnancy. This is controversial but also widely accepted as a way to combat the clots. If your homocysteine levels are elevated or if you have other risks for clotting (history of smoking, age, family history, weight, alcohol use, etc.) then your doctor will make the decision to put you on them. For me, my only clotting risk factor is my MTHFR and my homocysteine levels are perfect. As of now, my peri does not plan on putting me on blood thinners.
When I first got the diagnosis, I FREAKED out. Nobody had heard of it. My ex-ob basically said, "Take extra folic acid, your next baby might have spina bifita, good luck, bye." I fired her. Research is good once you've calmed down a bit. Realize this is very treatable and many of us have it. My sister has the exact same kind as me, and she has a healthy 9 mo old son (without treatment).
I'll be here for a few more minutes if you have other questions!!
One more thing- i got the diagnosis after my first two losses. I recently suffered a third loss but was reassured by all of my doctors that it was NOT because of my MTHFR.
Good luck to you, hun. Also, I'm online sometimes on AIM. My sn is LuckyGoFaster so you can IM me if you'd like
