C/S dilemma. What would you do?

Im due with #3 on 11/23. The earliest my OB can get me in for a rcs is 11/24 as they don't do them before 39w. OR I can go in on 11/16 39w and have her partner (whom I've never met) perform the rcs.

Background: DD1 I went into labor at 38w3d- ended in a cs. DD2 was a scheduled cs at 38w6d. I've only ever seen one OB so I don't know any of the other doctors though there are 21!

Im convinced I'll go early too with this one. So do I schedule with the partner for 11/16 or schedule for 11/24 with my doctor knowing full well there's a high chance I'll go into labor on my own and just go to the hospital for a cs then?

Thanks for for your opinions!

Re: C/S dilemma. What would you do?

  • That's definitely a tricky one! I know I'd feel more comfortable with my OB but you've gone into labor early with each one so chances of you making that one are slim. Why not schedule the later one and if you go early, you go in and have it done? Instead of scheduling the earlier and you might have been able to make it til the later with the OB you're comfortable with.

  • Is there any way for you to meet your OB's partner beforehand? If you believe there is a high likelihood that you will go early and could end up being delivered by someone you don't know, it may be beneficial to schedule with the partner if you can meet with them first.
  •  Do you really think there will be a difference between surgeons? If you really think that your doctor will do a better job, then it may be worth the risk of waiting.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • With DD, I saw the same doctor for my entire pregnancy and I had a lot of challenges both at the beginning and towards the end. My water broke early at 36w3d on a Friday night and the only option was the on-call doc from her practice whom I had never met. At that moment, I honestly didn't care. He was wonderful and kind and my baby was deliverered via c/s without complication (breech).
this time around, I am trying to meet as many of the clinic docs as possible. The chances of my doc delivering my boy are slim. I scheduled a Rc/s for 39w (they won't schedule for earlier than that) with a completely different doc but I have a feeling I will go earlier anyways.
i would try to meet the other doctor(s) to make sure you are comfortable with them because chances are you will go early and whoever is on-call will be the one to deliver your baby.
  • I would not go in early on purpose - I think it's healthier for the baby to wait. A c-section is a c-section no matter who performs it; the baby's health is more important than rapport with a doctor, especially since 90% of your actual hospital experience will be related to the quality of the  nurses, not the doctor who performs the surgery. (I had a c-section, so I have some frame of reference). I wound up really disliking the care of the doctor who was on call the day I delivered and who wound up doing the section but it turned out to be a non-issue within the context of the section itself.
