Threw out my back

Hi everyone,
I'm almost 15 weeks along and I threw out my back picking up my toddler this morning. My back instantly locked up. Thank god my husband is here to take care of our daughter because I can't move! It's really scary! Has this happened to anyone? I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions. I'm icing and I took some Tylenol. Is there anything else I could possibly do? TIA

Re: Threw out my back

  • My guess is that instead of icing, you should be applying heat. If you have a muscle that needs to relax, ice will have the opposite effect.

  • Maybe alternate ice and hot.  Ice is good for lowering inflammation and heat is good for releasing clenched muscles.
  • Thanks ladies, I will try alternating. Have a great weekend
  • As the other ladies said, Tylenol, alternate heat & ice, stay on hard surfaces (floor w/ a blanket for padding is best) & try to avoid sitting at all costs. Once you are capable of doing something other than laying still, taking short walks is helpful too. If at all possible, try to get a chiropractor appointment for Monday.

Typically ibuprofen is better for inflammation, but pregnancy :-/ You could also call your OB for advice regarding painkillers.

  • Definitely heat for lower back issues. Research has shown that icing is actually not as helpful for LB issues as it is for other muscular problems. (https://www.painscience.com/articles/icing-exceptions.php) Definitely use Tylenol as needed. You can try mild stretches (child's pose, knees to chest laying on the floor on your back, etc) if it's comfortable, but don't push it. You can also lie on the floor with your feet and lower legs up on the couch or a chair to relieve some tension in your lower back. If you're comfortable with a chiropractor it can be helpful, especially if your SI joint is causing some of the issues. Just make sure you're going to someone who regularly works with pregnant patients so they're not overdoing the manual adjustments. (Relaxin can make your joints less stable.)

Sorry for the novel! I'm a licensed massage therapist who used to work with PTs, so I've encountered this a lot. (Plus I have an old back injury from HS that flares up occasionally...just waiting for that to happen this pregnancy.  :s ) Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon!
  • My lower back has been acting weird lately but hasn't locked up yet. I'm sorry for your pain. Maybe call your doctor on Monday and see what she says?
  • No advice just want to say how sorry I am this has happened to you, it sounds very painful. Hope you get relief soon!
  • Find yourself a really good chiropractor, not one that is only in it for the money. Also read up on Pathways to Family Wellness:

  • @skuleecat Ah, I'm so sorry that happened to you! What a stressor when already pregnant with a child at home.

Mirroring @crossfitbabybump , I was going to say a chiropractor as well. I have scoliosis, so saw one regularly growing up, and they are a safer bet for adjusting you quicker (though I can't testify as to seeing one whilst pregnant). I hope you feel better soon either way!

What she said but seeing one while you're pregnant is beneficial for you! As long as you're seeing one that is specialized in adjustment pregnant women. It can help ease the birth. Read this article as well, this is a dear friend of mine who talks about how yes, your birth plan matters!

  • @antoto agreed. I've heard amazing things and my best friend swears by them but nope. The way they jerk your body. No thank you stay away from me.
  • Love chiropractors. Just don't let them crack your neck. I've seen too many young people with arterial bleeds in the head/neck from the shearing force. There are other ways to manipulate your neck safely.
  • @antoto yeah, I'm...skeptical of many (most?) chiropractors tbh, mainly because I worked with PTs for so long and they're usually not fans. Also because chiropractic work exacerbates issues for me - I'm hypermobile so any aggressive manual adjustments just makes things worse. My big rules of thumb for going to a chiro are a) they should have options and not just do manual adjustments (activators, etc) and b) if they try to push ANYTHING on you, supplements, whatever, run.
  • For all the non chiro ladies...I understand. I trust one chiropractor because a PT recommended him after a car accident. I worked with both the PT and the chiropractor, and he asked first appt if I wanted manual adjustment or the little device they use. I said the device because I am petrified of cracking bones, and he never once said I had to do otherwise. That being said...I still couldn't do it pregnant.
  • I am biased because my DH is a chiropractor bit adjustments while pregnant keep me going. Between my sciatic nerve and my hips and lower back I wouldn't be able to walk with out him. Chiropractors go through a semester of training on pregnancy and on babies and children.
DH did an adjustment on me when I was pregnant with DD because she flipped at 37 week to head up. I was going to have to have a manual version  at the hospital the next day if it didn't work. Within an hour she was flipped head down.
You are more likely to have an arterial bleed from getting your hair washed in a shampoo bowl than you are getting adjusted.
