Trouble TTC

Whoever decided to make prometrium red needs to be fired.

Venting.

I had an IUI and had my progesterone tested a few days later. It was low so I have to take prometrium and insert it vaginally twice a day. Side effects including feeling like I'm on fire, cramps that cause me to have to grab on to something solid to remain standing, heart burn, and an acne break out worse then anything I've ever had before. But that is nothing compared to the discharge. TMI but The pill dissolves and result in a red discharge that looks like spotting. So I have had the panicked "is this blood or prometrium" talk with myself every day since Tuesday.

Which ever genius chose to make this pill red needs to be fired. And slapped.

Very frustrating. Looking for alternatives.

Re: Whoever decided to make prometrium red needs to be fired.

  • Oh my gosh that's horrible! I've done prometrium vaginally before but it was a yellow pill (maybe a generic form??) so I didn't have the red discharge. Seriously though what a mind F to see that every single time you pee. Maybe talk to the pharmacy or dr about the generic yellow pill. I'm sorry I don't have the specific name :(

  • I asked if they had one that was a different color I've heard it also comes in white or yellow. But my pharmacy has only ever gotten the red type.
  • That sucks and would be driving me nuts. How much longer do you need to take it?

  • Ugh @fluffybookworm I'm sorry. When's your first beta?

  • @StephieBears88 I have to take it until I get pregnant and then I believe until week 14

@Worldtravler0522 this is my first cycle so I'm not sure what a beta is? I go in on Thursday for a blood test to determine my hcg.
  • Beta and HCG draw are the same thing.  Maybe when you go in talk to your doctor about the pills and see what they suggest because from a mental health standpoint it would be good for you to use another color!

  • @fluffybookworm Ah yes, I've had the red ones before and it's a mess. I ended up using liners to prevent the staining. Can you use a different pharmacy? I've gotten the yellowish pills from other pharmacies and it's so much better. Good luck with your beta!
  • @Bababatty unfortunately my insurance is giving me the run around about getting my prescription card so any pharmacy I go to except the one I've used for years normally can't apply my insurance to the prescription. I'm changing policies soon. But until then I'm stuck at my pharmacy.
Staining hasn't been so much the issue there's not a lot of discharge and it washes right out. I did switch to black underwear though for my sanity. Using a liner the first few days made me a nervous wreck.

@Worldtravler0522 I'm definitely going to say something to my doctor on Thursday. See if there's an alternative that she'll prescribe instead. I read up on injections, I'm gonna see if those are an option. Or if since my progesterone was 9.5 (was supposed to be 10) but they tested me a day early if I can safely stop taking it. Idk if testing a day early would affect levels.
  • Idk what has been going on the last two days but I'm pretty worried about my hcg test on Thursday. My FI keeps telling me that he knows I'm pregnant so I feel like if I'm not he's gonna be extra disappointed and then I'm gonna feel worse. And I'm also worried that the weird stuff going on with me is because of the prometrium (crazy heart burn, feeling like my stuff is on fire, overly emotional when I normally have the emotional range of a teaspoon, burping/coughing up stomach acid) and that if the hcg is negative I'm gonna be dealing with all of this longer then I planned.
  • @fluffybookworm maybe POAS to get a sneak preview of what to expect? I give you credit for not already doing it.

  • I've thought about it but I was told taking a home test could give false results because I had a trigger shot.
  • Ugh the pesky trigger shot! A day before you might be ok to cheat because it should all be out now but I get the hesitation.

  • Big fat negative. The good thing is I get to stop the prometrium.
  • I'm sorry to hear it's a BFN but next cycle hopefully you can skip the red prometrium.

  • Yeah. I didn't get a chance to talk to my nurse while I was there for the blood draw and when she called with the results I was at work so I had to keep the conversation brief but I'm going to talk to her about it and see if I'm able to do injections or a different type of progesterone pill instead.
  • I have been on the same red prometrium and cracked up when I saw the title of this thread! It's the exact thing I've been complaining about. I will say that I've been on it for about 8 weeks now and you do get to the point where it is always the exact same shade so it gets less concerning.

@fluffybookworm, I'm sorry about your BFN. Good luck with your next cycle!
