It's been kinda slow on the board, so I thought that it would be fun for us Trekkers, Whovians, Wayward Daughters, and Potterheads to get to know each other.  So; what are you reading/watching/playing right now? I'm in the middle of Arrow and Skyrim, and about to start Arthur C. Clarke's Ghost From the Grand Banks.

Re: Otaku Tuesday 9/12

  • I love nerd things. Mainly German board games, though I did play WoW for a while years back and was obsessed with all civilization type games before that. Having 2u2 AND building a house at the same time kind of destroyed any hope
of hobbies for a while though. Maybe when my youngest starts school I'll get back to it... best I can manage right now is watching GoT 7 times a year, lol. I did read the books before I had kids though....
  • Loading the player...
  • HAHA I didn't know there was a whole German subgenre of board games!  What sets them apart, aside from the language?

I have loved Civ since III and am really looking forward to VI, though I didn't care much for V.  Have you played Beyond Earth? It's fun but not revolutionary.

It's been very difficult to choose to read books instead of parenting articles since my daughter was born.  I'd say I've only finished three or four novel-sized books in the last year :-#  Used to get a book I wanted in the morning and finish it lying in bed that night! The quality of intellect has to suffer, right?

    Remember the Sunwell!

  • I am a huge HP nerd. I never get tired of reading the books and watching the movies. I also love GoT. I really enjoy reading but right now I'm in grad school which makes it super hard to have time for pleasure reading. I am currently (slowly) reading the first GoT book :)
  • Oh my goodness the Germans make all the best board games! Anything that has won Spiel des Jahres (German Game of the Year) is pretty much guaranteed to be awesome. Some have even become mainstream like the settlers of Catan! What makes them good is the strategy. I get so sad when someone suggests playing a game and then pulls out Apples to Apples or Cranium. Sorry/not sorry but I hate that shit. Games are serious business and if you want to get drunk then go play beer pong and leave me alone... not that I've been on that scene in years, lol! But I realize also they are not for everyone. I was raised on cut throat games of risk and I can't help but be competitive about everything
  • Oh and I feel you guys on the novel reading. I haven't read more than a handful since my 3.5yo was born and I used to be an avid, like all day, every evening kind of reader. Kids just soak up all my juices so all I want to do if I can get them to sleep is lay quietly in the dark, haha.

Same goes for computer games. I haven't even attempted playing one is years and have no clue what even exists anymore.
  • I have to catch up on board games because my family never played them and by the time I got to college, all my new friends had played Catan to death and didn't want to play it anymore - or RISK, which I love too!

  • I bet they'd play Agricola or Dominion!
  • Yes, and I do want to try those :-D

  • DH and I play LOTRO (Lord of the Rings MMO) so we're working through the Mordor expansion right now. Also, DH finally convinced me to give Supernatural a try.... O.M.G. I am officially a Wayward Daughter!!! I'm almost on season 3 and I can't stop!

  • I've seen every episode of Star Trek, the animated Star Trek, NG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. I can't wait for the new show to start! Firefly and serenity are still fairly quotable. I haven't seen most of Capaldi's Dr Who, but I watched everything from Eccelston forward. I basically quit watching when BBC stopped their contract with Netflix.

Years ago I played in two different DnD groups. One was once a week, and the other was once a month. I miss DnD, but I do not have time for that anymore... I don't like playing video games around J because I tune everything out around me, and I kind of need to pay attention to him. I suck at them though so I turn the difficulty setting down. I've played through all of skyrim, dragon age, and dishonored, recently. I still have the order 1882, and dishonored 2 to play though from Christmas of last year.

I've always been a DC over marvel girl. Batman, and Flash, are my favorites. I've been much of a comic book fan tbh... Lately I've really been into Armory Wars though. I've loved Coheed and Cambria since high school, so naturally I read those! Of course I've read all the Harry Potter books, and confession, I haven't seen the last two movies. I did see Fantastic Beasts and where to find them in theaters... And every Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movie, and Star Wars movie in theater... Riddick is my favorite sci-fi series.

I'm mostly a Disney nerd though... I play Disney magic kingdoms on my phone constantly.
  • Harry Potter is a big Part of me. My husband makes fun of how much I love HP, but whatever. He's just jealous that he couldn't take down the strongest dark wizard to date.
However, like @ivyvines6, Disney has my heart. I will find a babysitter and go see every new Disney movie that is released. Also, my son's nursery theme was Monster's Inc. You would never  know how much Monster's Inc stuff you can't find until you need it!
  • I'm a huge HP fan, I wish my baby would let me sit long enough to read them again! I am collecting all the illustrated books to read to her when she's older.
I need to watch the last season of Dr who.... And I'm excited to see what the new season will be like with the female doctor!
I'm pretty into all things nerdy, my favorite movies to see in theater are Marvel movies or Star Wars. I'm a librarian/children's programmer so it comes with the territory I guess.
  • Dominion is banned in this house. We play race foro the Galaxy right now, though dh has his eyes on some new games for Christmas.

Used to play DND but ain't nobody got time for that anymore.

Our announcement will be Harry Potter themed!

  • Just started playing the BioShock series (again) but I'm also working through Mass Effect Andromeda. I'm also gearing up to read Harry Potter again because I read it for the first time in January and I am now a totally OBSESSED Hufflepuff! Star Wars is my jam though! The movies, the books all of it! DS had a Star Wars themed baby shower and his room is all decked out in Star Wars stuff including a Wookie rug!
  • I'm a pretty big nerd too. HP is my go to. Ravenclaw 4 lyfe! @tincupchalice I am planning a HP nursery and announcement.
I'm into Star Trek (watching Enterprise right now) and DH and I have serious discussions about which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars. I will always say Star Trek.
I love to read. One of my faves is Orson Scott Card. I was so sad when Enders Game didn't do well at the box office. To be honest though, I much prefer his fantasy stuff over the sci fi.
I enjoy Dr. Who quite a bit but I wouldn't call myself a true whovian. I do have an awesome weeping angels shirt though. Best villains ever.
DH plays DnD. I do not and never plan to.

  • @sparkymcgeee I didnt really like the enders game movie. I don't think it's the kind of book that can translate well to movie format!

Yeah. Which makes me sad. It's such a good story.

  • DH can be accredited with all of my geek knowledge. He's really turned me on to Star Trek (TNG is the best, IMO) and modern table top board games. Our collection of games is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 but he's always getting more and supporting new games on kickstarter. We will be moving shortly after this LO arrives and I know he has big dreams for an official game room with a gaming table.
  • Hmm I really enjoyed Enterprise... That's definitely an UO for the ages. Btw @sparkymcgeee we're preggo soul mates. Other than the fact that I'm a slytherin... Ravenclaw scores the second highest for me.

  • I'm a Potterhead. Re-reading the series right now, currently on Prisoner of Azkaban. I actually took a HP class in college for a humanities credit. It was insanely hard and lots of people dropped out because they thought it would be an easy A. For example: What was the name of the gardener who stumbled upon Voldemort and Wormtail in Goblet of Fire? What is Albus Dumbledore's full name? What is the name of the book that the tale of the "Deathly Hallows" comes from? But it was very eye opening to see the level of research Rowling put into the whole entire series in regards to mythology, legends, folklore, and the ongoing connections throughout the entire series.

And I may get backlash for this, but I'm a Star Wars fan. Don't like Star Trek. Please don't chew my head off! LOL!

I know those answers, Frank is the gardener, Albus Wulfric Brian, but I know I'm forgetting one of his names and Tales of Beadle the Bard.

  • Grew up on Star Trek TNG (used my headbands to pretend I was Geordi La Forge)!!! Now I love the HP books and movies, GoT books and movies and play Nancy Drew PC games.  My husband loves to make fun of me as I go to the online message board for hints from my "pre-teen buddies" as he calls them.  Whatever..  Nancy Drew is the classic female badass.

  • @sparkymcgeee We would have also had to know what Frank's last name was (Bryce). The book was The Tale of Three Brothers. Every single test was riddled with questions that focused on the nitty gritty details like that that were maybe mentioned once. The final exam was excruciatingly painful for my brain lol. I think I squeaked by with a C? It was about 10 years ago lol.
