Lifting restrictions?

Hi everyone I am very early into my pregnancy following IVF treatment and was recently given a handout that recommended that while pregnant one shouldn't lift more than 30 pounds. I however am a therapist in a hospital and am lifting patients all day long. I've had plenty of pregnant coworkers and I don't understand how anyone can work in a hospital with just a 30 pound limit. My Dr was very unclear with me when I asked him how strict this was just said it was a general rule to follow. Has anyone else been told they can't lift over 30 pounds or any other fellow hospital workers out there that are going through this?

Re: Lifting restrictions?

  • I think that it's more restrictive for you because you got pregnant through IVF. I'm unclear about if it necessarily makes it a high risk pregnancy but they are more cautious. Legally, I'm pretty sure that your employer has to make reasonable accommodations for your medical condition.

  • What did you decide to do? Im a CNA and lift on people too all day and on my daughter who is 38lbs wants me to pick her up. Im 5 weeks.
  • Typically if you are low risk (idk if IVF falls in that category) if you've been lifting things, like patients or kids, you are ok to continue. But check with your doctor.

  • My doctor told me I'm good to continue doing what I'm used to doing. I get called in to my parents restaurant often and still carry heavy trays. I'd clarify what you can and can't do with your doctor.
  • I worked at a country club through 36 weeks lifting furniture to set up for banquets and heavy trays if food. My doctor told me u needed to stop for medical reason, otherwise I would have worked until labor and delivery.

Just be upfront with your doc and ask what's too much. He would know you and your history the best.
