Solid Foods - I am so lost!

I need some serious help with Caroline' schedule and getting solid foods in there.  So, if you have a 6 month old or remember what you baby's schedule was at 6 months can you please share?

This is what i am doing now:

6:30am - 8oz bottle

At daycare:

10am - 8oz bottle

12pm - rice cereal and 1/2 container of Stage 1 fruit

2pm - 8oz bottle

5pm - 8 oz bottle

At home:

1/2 container if Stage 1 veggies

Bedtime - 6 oz bottle

I feel like I am giving her too much formula and I should increase her intake of the baby foods.  I am probably going to start her Stage 2 foods soon, so I need to up her solids to 3 times a day.  Please help!

Re: Solid Foods - I am so lost!

  • Jax isn't 6 mo, but here is his schedule:

    8/9am - oatmeal w/ stage 1 fruits (about 1/3 container)

11/12 - 5 oz bottle (we are adding rice cereal to that starting today)

    2/3 - same as above

    5/6  - oatmeal w/ stage 1 fruits (about 1/3 container)

8ish - 6 oz bottle w/ rice cereal in it

    3/4am - 5 oz bottle

He doesn't eat enough for us to increase his ounces, but I think I am about to take out the 2/3 feeding and do that w/ oatmeal as well.  If he is still a little hungry after his oatmeal feedings we give him 2-3 oz of bottle.

  • I think you're fine.  Solids at 6 months aren't really for nutritional value, they are more to get them used to the texture/taste.  You should only introduce new foods after you are sure there will be no allergic reaction, so keep that in mind.  We introduced rice cereal first at dinner, then oatmeal, then multigrain.  Then we started veggies, then fruits, then meats.  I made all my own food.  Honestly though, we went really slow-I didn't feel the need to rush.  Don't cut back on the formula right now.
  • Alison-My dr emailed me about this very topic today.  I will get his advice and post it for you.  Basically, he feels that most nutrients should come from formula/breastmilk and food should be a supplement.  Anyway, I will post it later.
  • Alison,

I remember that feeling clear as day! The solids thing messed me up too. We struggled so long with the reflux it felt like we were just starting to get the hang of milk/formula then along comes solids! So, I feel your pain! Anyway here is what we did for 2 meals at 6 months:

    6:30am- 7oz bottle

8:30 am- 1/4 of cereal with 2-3 oz formula mixed in and 1/2 jar of stage 2 fruit

    9:30- 5oz bottle

    12:30- 5oz bottle

    3:30-4- 5oz bottle

6:00pm- 1/4 of cereal with the other 1/2 of the stage 2 fruit and 1/2 to a whole jar of stage 2 veggies

    7:00pm- 5oz bottle

When we added in lunch food she dropped the  9:30 bottle on her own.

You'll get it...it definitely took some trial and error for us, but it clicked in and it will for you guys too!

    P.S. Caroline is stinkin' adorable!!!!

  • I am glad you posted this.  I am a little confused as well.  I am interested to see what people say.  And throwing daycare in the mix makes things a little different as well (IMO).  I just started my little one on rice cereal.  And I am just doing it at dinner time.  I don't think I want to send her to daycare with it just yet.  Hopefully we will get some good responses!
  • I have definitley introduced foods slowly to make sure she was not allergic, but she has had most Stage 1 foods now and no bad reactions.  But when I was researching 6 month feeeding schedules online I feel like everything I saw was saying more food and only 3-4 bottles (Caroline gets 5 bottles!).  I was thinking I was missing something.

  • Alison-at that age, Colin got 3 bottles of EBM during the day and I nursed in the morning and evening.  So 5-6 times a day.
  • Actually solids aren't meant to be given for nutritional reasons and shouldn't be considered a "meal" at this point. they are only for taste/texture and allergy "testing"... to get the little one have an easier transition to table foods and help them learn to eat.

Oh and stage 1 and 2 are exactly the same right now texture wise :)

Formula should still be her main source of food and solids only for "learning" so it looks like your routine is fine :)

L had more bottles then that per day :). Don't worry.. let her have as much as she needs of formula before you give her baby food.

Maja is still only BF and has only had a taste of potatoes and peas from my plate

  • Reid isn't 6mo yet....but we have started him on cereal and fruits/veggies. To say he was ready/interested is an understatement...so we started.... He nurses around 5:30 again around 9:00 eats cereal and 1/2 jar fruits veggies around  10:30/11:00 nurses around 1:00 and 5:00 eats cereal around 6/6:30 and nurses at bedtime (7:30/8:00). Since I nurse I'm not sure how much he gets...but I think its around 5oz.

  • Allison if she drinks that much (38 oz) formula in one day she is ready for a whole jar of stage 1 fruit @ 12:00pm and a whole jar of stage veggies @ dinner.  Formula is her main source of nutrition but if she drinks 38 oz a day she is more than ready for you to increase her solids.  I  heard somewhere that babies shouldn't consume more than 32 oz of formula because of their kidneys not being able to process all of that.  I don't know if this is true but I know I heard it before.

My pedi wanted us to start 3 solids a day at 6 months but he was not ready in my opinion since he never drinks 8 oz at any setting even now at 8 months.  He has topped out at 6 or 6 1/2 oz max.  I would talk to your pedi about increasing her solids because she is definitely ready.  Also Stage 2 Food are basic single ingredients and combination foods but are in a 4 oz jar so the Stage of food is not to much of a concern.  Just try her with a whole jar of stage 1 which is 2.5 oz and I'm sure she will eat it up.  As you introduce a 3rd solid you will probably notice that she will taper off on the milk.  For instance, she may drink 7 oz instead of 8oz which is more than enough.  Just trial and error.  I just started Connor with 3 solids a day last week and I have noticed that he may drink 5 oz instead of 6 oz which is no biggie.  The crazy thing is by the time we figure this out to a T they will be moving onto table food (yikes)!

  • 8:00am: 6 oz bottle stage 1 fruit-he's a piggy so he'll eat all of it

11:30 or 12pm-Bottle with the rice cereal in it b.c that is the only way he'll take the rice cereal.

    2:30/3pm-Fruit another jar

    4:30/5-8 oz bottle

    6:30: A jar of veggies

    7:30 bed

This is give or take but the food seems to have been filling him up enough to forgo one of the mid day bottles. I am bad about the rice cereal b/c he didn't like it and it was making him constipated but I try to put in in atleast one bottle per day.
