Teacher Mama Question!

edited August 2017 in April 2018 Moms
Fellow teacher mamas, when will you be telling your students? I am a STM, but I had DS1 right before student teaching, so I've never had to break the news to my students before.

How and when do you like to tell your students and their parents that you're expecting?

Re: Teacher Mama Question!

  • I'm going to tell my students around the same time I post on FB - around 12 weeks, which is mid-October. My estimated due date is 4/27 and I'll only be missing the two weeks before finals.  I teach high school English and they're doing an essay instead of a final, so they won't miss out on review. Not sure if I need to tell parents - the kids might take care of that for me.

  • I actually haven't given much thought to it.  But it definitely won't be before 12 wks.  I teach high school so honestly they'll figure it out
  • I'm not a teacher, but my husband is. Should he also tell his students? I honestly hadn't thought of it. He's planning on taking some time off for the baby, so I suppose he'll have to explain that to his students.
  • With my first I let my students figure it out on their own and since I was pretty small to begin with most didn't figure it out until around 30ish weeks. My favorite was when I was less than 4 weeks from my edd and a 2ND grader looked down and said, "what's wrong with your belly?" And a little girl looked at him and said, "dude, she has a baby in there!"
I assume I will show earlier this time but hoping till after my anatomy scan. So right before or after Christmas break.
  • I'm not a teacher, but I am a counselor. I'm at a mid high, so we have 7th through 12th grade here. I will plan to tell students around 12 weeks, though as they ask and not by any special announcement. I really want to be sure my dating and NT ultrasound look good first. I probably won't be able to it any longer than that anyways. They're pretty observant.
  • Oh man. Today was our first day with students and this is my first year at this school so this has been weighing heavy on me. I'm slowly telling my coworkers as it comes up (it's getting hard to hide my morning sickness), but I really want to develop a relationship with these kids first. They have had so much inconsistency in their science classes that they are already skeptical of ANOTHER new teacher, so I hate to be part of more inconsistency for them. Except I guess this will be the first time it's exciting news (usually the science teacher quits or gets fired) so i guess I'll tell them when they will be excited for me as opposed to when they will focus on losing *another* science teacher.

  • Once it's blatantly obvious that I'm pregnant.  I'll definitely wait until after 12 weeks.  I teach elementary, so I need to make sure I let parents know once I tell them b/c they'll be worried about my maternity leave.

  • I didn't tell my class last time until 16+ weeks. I will only tell them once I know the sex of the baby, I think. I teach third grade and am due the week our state testing starts, so I'll definitely tell my principal around 12 weeks.

I'm a college professor and planning to buy a shirt to wear on Halloween that is black and has the baby skeleton outline on the belly. Know which ones I'm talking about? By then I'll be about 16-17 weeks so they might've figured it out before then, but I'll use that to confirm suspicions :)
    Cute! I love that!

That would be a fabulous and tough week to miss all at the same time!

That is my concern as well. I teach second in a small and very close knit school, so I know parents will be very concerned about me taking maternity leave near the end of the school year.

  • I'm a high school teacher at a tiny high school and once I tell my boss and coworkers, I am sure the word will get out. Otherwise I guess I would tell them around 12 or 13 weeks..... which isn't all that far away (!)

I completely get wanting to build a relationship with your students because of their past experiences.  Hopefully they'll be very excited for you since you'll be gone for a baby, and not leaving for good!

  • Last time I waited till one of them figured it out. I want to say it was around 16 or 18 weeks. They only figured it out because a co worker wasn't very cryptic. I honestly haven't decided when to tell them. I still haven't told anyone yet.

I teach high school science at a small district and also head up our gifted and talented program. Since I will be gone around state testing and dissection time, as well as our AP exam time, I will tell some coworkers and my leadership team once I am past 12 weeks. As for my students, I too plan to wear a black shirt with skeleton outline for Halloween to confirm suspicions. I would like my students and their families to know prior to posting on social media.
  • @mcg920 @jem8407 I like the Halloween shirt... if by any chance my students don't know by then, I think I'll have to steal your idea! :)

  • I teach HS English, and with my first, I did a lesson on Sylvia Plath's "Metaphors" to tell my classes around 16 weeks. It's a poem of metaphors about being pregnant. Most of them guessed what was going on before that point, but it was a day I'll never forget!

  • @tophywife I love this! Sylvia is my favorite!

I teach high school. With both my my pregnancies, I didn't tell my students until they figured it out...and it was at about 26 weeks both times (I don't get big until the end). I did tell my department chair right away (she's also a close friend) because I teach AP and I needed her to keep an ear to the ground to get me a good sub for my students review.
