1st Trimester

Nervous about whether I will gain enough weight

Hi everyone,

I am 8 weeks, 120 pounds and about 5'2" to 5'3". Thankfully, I am able to cope with my morning sickness. So, I only lost 1 pound. I haven't been exercising as much, but am planning to get back into it next week since I am feeling a little better.

However,  I have to admit that I am nervous about whether I will gain enough weight during this pregnancy. I eat 5-6 small meals and don't eat a lot of processed food. Not that I am above processed food, it is just that I have a number of severe food allergies that limit what I can eat....mainly things that are processed.

How do people gain 22+ without resorting to eating processed food? I don't see how it is possible with a clean diet. Am I missing something? FTM here, so this is all new to me.

Not everyone gains 22+ pounds and even then, its baby, placenta, extra blood and amniotic fluid. You really only need like 300 extra calories, but your body reprioritizes what it goes to.

Personally when i was pregnant my only real 1st tri symptom was being hungry ALL the time. I snacked continuously and tried my best to keep it healthy. Just eat when you're hungry and drink lots of water. You'll gain what you gain and as long as your doctor is happy then don't stress it.

I think meggyme sums it up nicely. The baby isn't growing off of calories alone, though, you are also retaining water too. I think you'll find that even if you eat healthy, you'll be putting on the pounds anyway - You are, after all, growing a baby. I believe you'll notice it more starting in the second trimester, some people lose weight or don't gain any in the first trimester.

  • Thanks everyone. I guess I should have a little more faith in this process as long as I am listening to what my body requires and eating healthy.
  • I wouldn't worry about it unless your doctor becomes concerned. I'm overweight and worked really hard my first pregnancy to eat healthy to avoid a ton of weight gain. For reference I gained 18 pounds. My daughter weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces. Your placenta weighs about 1.5 pounds then the amniotic fluid etc. I was at my pre pregnancy weight a week after she was born. With that pregnancy (and this one) I didn't gain any weight until closer to 15/16 weeks. Hang in there, I know it's hard not to worry.
  • Thanks! FTM here, so this is all new to me.
