Chewing Question

DD loves her cherios, cheese, purees and zwiebec toast, but when it comes to chewing something of substance (like meat), DD has a lot of trouble. We gave her tiny pieces of chicken last night and she was having a hard time chewing and getting visiblt frustrated. We put a little sauce/water in it to make it soft, exaggurated the chewing motion, and tried to remove all distractions, but she ends up throwing up food that hasn't been chewed. I'm assuming we just need to keep trying what we're doing, but anyone have any other suggestions? She just seems so frustrated!

Re: Chewing Question

  • How many teeth does she have?

  • she is still quite young. Just keep trying and as she gets more teeth it will become easier.
  • She has 3 on top, 2 on the bottom, and some more comming in as we speak.  She's more gumming the food then chewing it.

  • That's probably why her chewing seems weird to you and is hard for her. She isn't able to really chew foods well with the teeth she has. As she gets more teeth her chewing will get better, plus she'll have had more experience with it too Smile
  •  I cut the meat up as small as I can and mix it into potatoes or pasta, so they don't even really know it's there.  My kids are lazy and don't like to chew meat, too much effort;)

  • I found that if the meat is not really really tender they cannot chew it so I shred it into tiny pieces so they do not really have to chew.  They have been doing better then last month or 2.  Give it time :)
