Secondary IF

IVF for 2nd child

I'm curious how many people have done IVF to conceive a 2nd child after having the first without intervention.  We have one son, age 4, and have been struggling with secondary IF for 2.5 years.  We would love a second child, but we're having a hard time justifying the cost of IVF, with no insurance help, when we already have one great healthy kiddo.

Re: IVF for 2nd child

  • Hi @starlightstef!  I am currently in my 2 week wait with IVF for child #2.  We conceived child #1 via IVF which is why I have hope for conceiving #2 with IVF.  But you can see from my history in my signature that the journey for child #2 has not been as easy as for #1.

We've felt fortunate that we have DS, but have always wanted at least one more.  You'll also notice from my history that we took a few years off from trying.   Partly due to financial reasons since we are also completely out of pocket.

It's a difficult and personal decision to make. In addition to finance,  there is also the emotional rollercoaster that can go along with it as well.  That's the other reason for the long break.  We were emotionally drained from the failed attempts. But we're at a point right now that we were able to try again.

Not sure if that helps any.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".
    IVF #1: ER 03/29/10; ET 04/01/10: transferred 2 embies; Beta #1 (9dp3dt)- 45; Beta #2 (11dp3dt)- 91= BFP
    FET#1: ET 04/18/12: transferred 4 embies; Beta #1: >2 = BFN
    IVF #2: ER 06/20/12; ET 6/25/12: transferred 2 embies; Beta #1 on 7/5/12= BFN
8/16: hysteroscopy for uterine polyp removal
11/11: hysteroscopy #2 for yet another uterine polyp removal
    FET#2: ET 12/15/12: transferred 3 embies; Beta #1 (9dp5dt): 12/24/12: 426; Beta #2 (11dp5dt): 12/26/12: 845= BFP
u/s 1/9= triplets!; miscarried all three on 1/10/13...
    IVF#3: ER 03/30/17; ET 4/4/17: transferred 1 grade 5AA embryo; Beta #1 (9dp5dt): 4/13/17= 15; Beta #2: 4/17/17: BFN

Sounds very similar to my story! We will be doing our first Ivf transfer in December at cny fertility. Our first child wasn't planned and have been struggling with ttc since August 2015

  • My first was conceived relatively easily. Since I had him my cycles have been extremely long and they're not quite sure I'm ovulating each month. When I went to an RE they found nothing diagnosable so under that great umbrella of unexplained infertility. After monitored clomid and one horrible failed round of IUI, I did a cycle of IVF in June. The transfer had to be delayed and I'm going for my first transfer next week with a frozen embryo.

IVF is extremely expensive. I'm so lucky that I live in a state where insurance coverage is mandatory. I can't imagine having to pay everything out of pocket. I would probably be in the same quandary as you are. Good luck with your journey @starlightstef!
  • My first took about 6 months, I was 36. I had his at 37 and started trying at 38. It took 9 months, misscarried at 7 weeks. Had a chemical pregnancy 11 months later & we started trying as soon as my cycle was normal after mc.  I am now over 40 with a diagnosis of DOR. I just had a failed IVF cycle which was converted to iui on 8/10. The waiting is slowly tearing me apart and the progesterone is awful. 1 more week to wait.
I too am lucky to live in a state where infertility is a mandated coverage, otherwise we would likely not be on this journey
  • Wow what a journey you have been on with a lot of heartache! I agree that the waiting is the worst part. I just had my egg transfer Tuesday so now it's just that wait to see if it worked. So many emotions through this whole process. Sending some positve thoughts for your IUI cycle results. When will you know?
  • @jfeeney06 I should know by Friday or Saturday next week. Technically it is Saturday but my re doesn't do beta on weekend. I work in a school and school starts that Monday so I am hoping if no af they will let me test Friday. Are you on progesterone? It is making me feel worse every day!
  • I'm a teacher but we don't start until after Labor Day. I hope they'll let you rest Friday too! It would suck to have to wait all weekend. I test on Friday as well to see if that little embie was sticky. The progesterone is making me not great at all. I'm pretty tired and overall just don't feel myself. Some days I'm very hungry and some days im not really hungry at all...borderline nauseous. Hey the things we will do to have a baby!
  • No af yet, <fingers crossed> not feeling preggers but not feeling like af is coming either. I'm going to call re today. I live in a very rural area, about 1.25 hours from re, my principal will not allow me to be late on the first day of school, I hope they let me test.
  • That stinks!! First day of school is important! I hope you get the go ahead you want to hear!
  • @jfeeney06 just checking in, I got a bfn, hoping you are celebrating
  • Oh no @str14! I was hoping for a better out come for you. My results were a bfp. I go for my second beta tomorrow. My first numbers were good so hopefully it stays this way so I am being cautious not to get too excited. How do you move on from here? Will you do another cycle?
  • @jfeeney06 that is so awesome!!!! I'm so excited for you! I don't know where I will go from here, I don't know if I emotionally have another in me, I feel like this made me close to the edge. I must sound like a total wimp! Im hoping to talk to my nurse and re, they started me on highest dose of injectibles and I didn't respond so I'm not sure what where we would go from here.
  • @str14 I can completely understand feeling beat down. This whole process is exhausting and emotionally taxing.  I don't think you sound like a wimp at all. Everything is hurry up and wait and you're left obsessing over what the end result will be. For me, when things didn't go smoothly it was always a feeling that my body is failing me AGAIN. Sometimes the brakes between cycles were good for me because I didn't have to think about everything as much. Give yourself some time to settle and regroup.

Will you discuss your options with your doctor? Does he/she have an insight why the IVF failed?? Maybe there are different medications you could try?? Are you open to donor eggs?
  • @jfeeney06 when do you go back? When do they do an ultra sound? I spoke with my nurse, they are putting my case in front of failed cycle review board. All the doctors, embryonologists, aprn's, everyone reviews all labs, meds and see what could have gone wrong and what possibilities could be in our future. That happens on September 12, they should get back to us by the end of that week. In the meantime I'm just refocusing on myself and my little man, enjoying the beginning of fall! We are in MA and it is crazy how fast the weather turned this week!
  • I'm in MA too!! It's basically freezing lol especially at night. Where do you go for treatments? That review board sounds great! A ton of eyes looking at your case and throwing out ideas and new possibilities. Never give up! Though I know that's easier said then done.

Please let me know how this all goes.

AFM my second beta numbers were really strong and my first ultrasound is two weeks from today. I'm cautiously optimistic.
