29 weeks baby in 17th percentile

I had my 28 week appointment yesterday for my glucose test and got another ultrasound. Long story short, my dr told me my baby (my second little girl) went from the 25th percentile at my anatomy scan to the 17th percentile. I go back in one month for another ultrasound to make sure it's not gone down more. She tried to assure my it's not always accurate and could just mean I have smaller babies since my first was 6 lbs 13.5 oz at birth, but she said worse case scenerio would be we would have to worry about her not growing and possibly being still born! Any other mom's experience anything like this?

Re: 29 weeks baby in 17th percentile

  • I'm sorry your doctor said that and scared you. I was 4 lb. 13 oz. at birth and I'm fine! Now granted, I am a twin and she was 5 lb..... but babies are so much bigger nowadays that it makes babies that used to be average seem small. What did they say for you to do to help with growth? I'm not a doctor... so if you're concerned, maybe you can see another doctor.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • My daughter was born in the 5th percentile at 5 lbs 13 oz. She's now a very healthy 6.5 year old who has maintained her weight in the 25th percentile since she was 2. Hopefully, everything will be fine with your baby.
  • Someone has to be in the lower percentiles, otherwise the range wouldn't exist at all. So being in the 17th in and of itself does not sound like a problem. Also moving from 25th to 17th isn't that huge of a drop. But the fact that the doctor brought up stillbirth is a huge red flag. Either she is being careless in throwing that word out there when the concern is not really there, or the concern IS there - but she's only having you do another u/s in a month. Honestly I would get a second opinion either way, and if there is something going on you would want to have another u/s much sooner than in one month.

At my 28 week u/s they told me that he is in the 70th percentile for length and head but his abdomen is in the 5th percentile so they are also concerned he is not growing correctly or getting what he needs. Not excatly the same situation but it is definitely scary thinking that something is wrong with how they are growing :(. I was told to keep a close eye on my kick counts and to eat more and move less. they didn't say anything about being still born but they did mention that early delivery is a possibility if he continues to decline in percentiles.
  • Thinking of you! Hope everything turns out ok <3
  • I go Sept 5th to check growth. I have a marginal insertion so it can cause a growth delay. Could that be why baby dropped in weight gain? Did they tell you why or how it happened? I hope you get your answers soon...I wouldn't leave without an explanation cuz that's a huge worry
