Baby Names

Jethro

How bad is it? I don't love it, but my husband is 100% set on it and he compromised on our first son's name.

I am pretty sure he wants to use the NN Jett, which I don't hate but also don't love.

I feel like I associate it with a certain TV show and I don't know if everyone else will or not.

Re: Jethro

  • NMS, but whatevs.  My bigger issue with it is that it looks like your older son is Theo, and Theo and Jethro don't seem to pair well to me.

  • @kaos16 his full name is Theodore, so that makes them a little better together. My biggest problem with Theo/Jethro is the same ending sound, but if we go with Jethro we would probably usually call him NN Jett most of the time.

  • It's 100% Beverly Hillbillies to me!

However, I'm not sure that would be a dealbreaker.  I'd see how many people on here catch the reference.

I'll ask my kids for you.  They're 13 and 16; closer to your child's generation.  They have never seen the TV show and don't know it exists, so they won't be biased.  Here are their reactions:

DD -- nope.  It's bad.  It sounds like a made up name.

DS -- Like "death row?"  Actually, when he said this, DD chimed in and said she also immediately thought "death row."

  • @neverblushed oh man, I hadn't ever considered the "death row" rhyme. That's not great.

  • It's country bumpkin to me

  • I definitely think of Beverly Hillbillies.  Not sure if that should keep you from using it, but the "death row" rhyme is also not great.  Not sure that that's a deal breaker either, though.  My biggest issue would be that you don't love it.  I strongly feel that both parents should 100% love the name that they choose.  Would you two consider it in the middle name spot?

  • I would use the name Jett as a full first name a million times over Jethro.  Definitely hillbillyish to me.  I picture a dirty guy in overalls with missing teeth and a piece of hay (or whatever it is) sticking out of his mouth.

  • I like Jethro. I associate it with Gibbs on NCIS, and Jethro Tull. I think it's a kinda western throwback name and I don't think most people would think "hillbilly". If you aren't in love with it though, it's time to table it.
  • I immediately thought of Jethro Tull. It's a no for me, too.
  • tull and hillbilly
    definite no
  • Another no vote for Jethro.

  • @hullabalou  -- I wouldn't have thought of "death row" either, but both my kids hit on it right away.

However, I still don't think it's enough to completely disqualify the name.  There's something redeeming about it even with the Beverly Hillbillies connection and rhyming with death row.  I feel like it's the male equivalent of "little old lady" names that are popular for girls right now like Maisie, Elsie, etc.  I wouldn't make this name choice my hill to die on.

  • No strong opinion either way. Don't hate it, don't love it. Would feel a little on the old man side but not the worst name I've ever heard. The nickname Jett is cute.
  • I'm not a fan personally but it's not too bad
  • Jett is not bad but i vote no on Jethro.
