Paleo or Whole30 September?

Lately I've really felt the need to buckle down on eating healthy.  That is probably due to the fact we're taking care of my much younger sister who will not voluntarily eat vegetables or most fruit. I feel pretty strongly about family dinner, and that the family all eat the same meal, which has unfortunately resulted in a lot of pasta and meat. I'm feeling the veggie deficit! I am considering a pregnancy-modified Whole30 or Paleo September reset. Would any ladies be interested in joining me?  If so, I'm happy to start a weekly accountability thread and a recipe thread.

I'll say up front, I'm not doing this for a diet in the sense of weight management at all.  I just want to focus on highly nutritious eating.  In both Whole30 and Paleo, there are categories of food items that you are encouraged not to ingest but are otherwise not restricted.  Pregnancy modified for both basically means - listen to your body.  If you feel the need to eat one particular thing, restricted or not, eat it.

Whole30 Food No's:  1) No Alcohol; 2) No sweeteners (natural or artificial); unsweetened fruit juice is fine; 3) No grains or cereals; 4) No legumes (green beans or other legumes where the pod is consumed are fine); 5) No dairy.

Paleo Food No's: 1) No alcohol; 2) No artificial sweeteners or added sugars; maple syrup, honey, and agave nectar are fine; 3) No gluten grains; 4) No dairy; 5) Limited legumes.

Re: Paleo or Whole30 September?

  • I am still so nauseous and sick that I'm not modifying my diet. I would do something after pregnancy but not now.

  • I'm in the same boat as @lancomechica2. I can't wait to feel normal again.
  • I did Whole 30 starting last February because all of my neighbors were doing it, and wound up with my BFP. Not sure if that's the reason but I'm thinking it's good for you either way.

Honestly it takes a lot of extra time. If you are a FTM with good work hours you might have time to do it, but if you are in the third tri with a lot of other stuff going on it will be stressful. ZERO mistakes are allowed, or else you have to start over. You cannot weigh yourself or measure yourself. You cannot make desserts or treats out of Whole 30 ingredients. But you will notice a difference in your body (maybe less so if you're 8 months pregnant :) ).

  • We actually do paleo 90% of the time already. We have been strict with it on and off for the last 4 years. Right now I crave milk so much that's my one cheat, but H stays pretty consistent with it. I am all for this

  • @Abby7  - I did a strict round of Whole30 the first month after I found out I was pregnant.  You're right, it is hard work but I really felt great on it.  I already have food allergies to dairy and gluten, and with pregnancy am not drinking.  I've been reading up on the Whole30 pregnancy modifications and, as I understand it, W30 mamas are encouraged to stay strictly compliant to the extent possible with the understanding that, in pregnancy, modifications will be necessary based on food aversions, body needs, etc.

@DungeonTrollMel  - Glad to have the company! I'm inclined toward a Paleo month as opposed to a strict W30.  Do you  have a preference?  I'll start a post September 1, then weekly thereafter on Sundays.   In my past W30 support groups I have found helpful for me to put up a daily entry with my meals and reactions, and anticipate I would just add this as a reply entry in the weekly discussion thread.  Does that sound alright to you?

  • @curiousfool1 agreed, my afternoon energy has never been better than that month I was on W30, at least not since childhood. It really evens out your energy levels and makes you feel lighter (regardless of the scale). But there was no way for me to keep even close to it during the first tri, since all I could handle were plain carbs and I definitely needed sugared soda. You must not have had a lot of morning sickness?

  • @Abby7 - Yeah.  I was pretty lucky.  Relatively minor afternoon nausea, but a serious aversion to all naturally green vegetables!  That part made strict compliance tricky.  I ate a LOT of fruit that month. My baby sister leaves on Sunday and I'll be pretty happy to avoid pasta for a long time.

I would love a nice paleo month. I've been carb loading because it's easy and quick. I need to feel better and get some more energy.
