TMI...perineal massage?

1.  Is anyone else doing it?
2.  Has anyone else used it before, and if so was it helpful or no?
3.  If you've used it or are trying it now... any tips to get the muscles to relax down there?  I'm having a tough time with this even with very gentle sessions.  I could use some tips on isolating the muscles a bit.  When I "think" I'm relaxing the muscles my husband says its tense, and when I "think" I'm pulling the muscles "inward" he says it feels relaxed.  What's wrong with me, haha?

Any and all advice, resources, links much appreciated!

Re: TMI...perineal massage?

  • I haven't started this yet, but I do plan to soon. I know my doula supports perineal massage by a birth partner before and during labor.
  • Loading the player...
  • My nurse did this with me right before I started pushing with my DS at the hospital.  I plan to have my husband do it but still have to research a bit more on it and how to exactly do it.
  • For both of my kids, the nurses at the hospital did it for me when I was in labor right before and while I was pushing. I believe it helped a ton since I didn't tear with either. I had minor stretching tears from just the obvious stretching of everything but they were surface skin ones, nothing that actually bled or needed stiches.
  • Eh, I know there is some research recommending it, but I personally have no desire to try it. And this might of been what the OB was doing when I was pushing and almost got him kicked when he didn't stop after I asked him to. Definitely a personal preference, but it might help prevent tearing.

lol yeah, that was not comfortable at all while I was pushing. I wanted to scream move your fingers!! I highly doubt doing a massage that late in the game was going to do anything. I don't plan on doing it with this baby.
  • My OB did this when I was pushing. It didn't bother me, but just was kind of an odd feeling. I don't know if it reduced tearing or not because I don't know what the outcome would have been without it! I had a second degree tear that my OB said was considered an average tear for a first time mom.
  • The Nurse did this to me in between pushing. I still ended up with an episiotomy after pushing for 2 hours - which I was fine with. At that point, I just wanted the baby out.
  • I've been trying it but not while I'm doing anything with relaxing or contracting muscles like you describe. I'm just trying to gently stretch the skin for a minute or two while in the shower. I was following these suggestions but I'm not familiar with this at all.
