Randoms 8/14-8/20

My autocorrect wanted to change randoms to ransoms. I hope to not have to use ransoms often enough to have it be a suggested word.

What do you have going on this week?

Re: Randoms 8/14-8/20

  • Doing some chores around the house today, apartment hunting tomorrow, and SIL (brother's wife, not DH's gross sis) is having a baby shower this weekend and I'm excited to unload some of DD's baby stuff on her. Apparently there's a pool there and the kids will probably all want to swim, but I feel a bit selfconscious about my bikini body. I don't want to make DD sit out, but she's too little to swim alone so I'm not really looking forward to that part...but hopefully it'll be fun overall.

  • Tried to transition LO to a magic Merlin suit today for a nap, didn't work out so we are back to a swaddle for now!

For or anyone who has transitioned how is it going for you?

  • @mtb16 the Merlin suit didn't work for ds1 but now that you reminded me I'll try it out with ds2.

@OmegaRose3 I'm not bikini ready either. I took ds to a splash pad and wore my cover-up the whole time. Can you make your husband come to the shower and just hang out in the pool with your dd?

Today was exhausting. My LO cried most of the day... Only took 20 minute cat naps. Actually that's how most days have been going. I want to cherish this time because I know babies grow so fast but sometimes it's hard to when I am so exhausted and my house is a disaster.
  • @lrwardrop my family is dumb about stuff so it's a strictly no guys baby shower...I hadn't thought about wearing a cover up to swim, that could work. The skin is just so loose and dark and I'm just not there yet. It's just out of my comfort zone.
  • @OmegaRose3 I'm not bikini ready either. This summer has been brutal so no everyday walks for us. I like @lrwardrop 's suggestion of a cover up.

@lrwardrop that definitely sounds exhausting. How is your toddler while LO is crying?

Today worked out great. I wanted Rowan to have a break from his car seat and stayed home today. MIL came over to visit and made SO much food for us and played with DS1 outside while I made some much needed phone calls. Again, moms are amazing. Thanks MIL!

The rest of the week should be interesting. I need to start packing so we can get our essentials moved over to the new house. My goal is to return to work in two weeks so that I still have two weeks of bonding time left over for the rest of Rowan's first year. I'm really hoping we can get settled in by the end of the week. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

  • @mrsrep123 my toddler is extra needy when the baby is crying. He still doesn't like me giving the baby my attention which then makes him cry as well.
  • @OmegaRose3 I definitely get not being bikini ready. But the coverup option is a good one. How about a 1-piece? I squeezed myself into one this weekend. Ultimately you're the only one who will be worried about your appearance as we all know everyone else there will probably be worried about what *they* look like. And your kids will just be happy you're swimming!
@lrwardrop I too got cried at all day by my LO.  Naps have been so crappy here lately. It's so discouraging.
  • Definitely not bikini ready here either. My Mom snapped right back, I am not having the same luck. Then again, I got HUGE and she did not.

  • @OmegaRose3 I've never worn a bikini in my life. I stick to the one pieces and I have to say there are some nice looking options. But as previously mentioned, the kids will be excited to be in the pool and everyone else will be to self-conscious about their own bathing suits to pay any attention. I hope you have fun.

@MTB16 we went from the Halo swaddle sack to basic sleep sacks, relatively easy. DD now sleeps in footed sleepers. She never really liked her arms to be swaddled anyway so we didn't even bother. I think that made it easier to just sleep in pjs.

@lrwardrop I hope today is less exhausting than yesterday.

DS1 starts kindergarten tomorrow. I really hope getting back to more of a set family schedule will be beneficial for us all.

  • My issue with one piece swimsuits is that I have a long torso and the fit tends to be off and more recently I've only seen one piece suits that are a bit over the top or just completely unflattering. I also have a few family members that are overly body obsessed and like to look for anything that isn't perfect on me to point out because I'm a naturally thinner and taller person. It makes me feel like I'm in middle school and it gets old quick.
  • @OmegaRose3 I have the same issue with one pieces. I bought a tankini top to wear in case I felt up to it this summer but I'd rather not just yet. I'll keep it for this winter if I want to do some indoor swimming with ds1. No one better say anything to you about your current figure, you have a newborn!

I tried out the magic Merlin suit today. Didn't work any magic... I'll keep trying.. LO must be having a growth spurt he is so fussy and won't sleep.

  • @mcvgal good luck tomorrow! I hear ya on getting back to a set schedule. These past months have been chaotic to say the least. I just want to be settled into our new home and get our groove on as as family of four without the added stress of finding a home/moving/etc.

@lrwardrop I know Rowan is entering leap 4 this week and the 3 month growth spurt has or is happening too. I'm hoping that's all it is for you and you get some relief soon.

  • Well it's 440am here and I've got 2hours of sleep.... My toddler will be up in about 2.5 hours and H will be at work all day.... Ugh  :(
  • Hey everyone!
my phone is half broken so tagging people doesn't work.
+1 for definitely not bikini ready. I head back to work in 2 weeks and I'm so dreading it. I went into today to visit with DD and hearing how some clients are doing made me want to run for the hills.
DD also hates naps. She refuses to fall asleep on her own for them which is so difficult for me since the transfer lately has been failing.
We also need to stop swaddling but it works so it's so hard to get out of. I got a zipadee zip yesterday and I've been trying it out for naps but it's been a major fail.
I don't know how I'd survive if I had a toddler because of how needy DD is.
Someone just lie to me and tell me she will learn to nap without the swaddle and on her own without protest. Ugh so hard
  • @Jens_Hoes I thought having one was difficult, then I had another. These first few months have just been about surviving.

As far as transitioning from swaddling, I say pick a day (soon since you're going  back to work soon) and don't swaddle for naps. If she startles, place your hand on her chest/tummy to calm her, shush, and offer her pacifier if you're using one. It might take a day or two and some patience, but it'll happen.

    Good luck!

    DS2 5/7/17

  • @Jens_Hoes no major advice, but I feel for you. I feel lucky that DS is typically easy-going because having 2 is no joke. DD was a clingier baby so maybe it's a first born thing?

@lrwardrop FX you can sneak in a nap

@mcvgal How are you feeling about DS going to kindergarten? I get emotional at the idea of my littles going to school. Also hoping getting on a schedule is beneficial for you all

    @nda_roxybabe How have you been?

For those of you who have toddlers and babies... How do you deal with your toddler being unintentionally pesky? DD loves DS, but if she wakes DS up from another nap, I might rip my hair out. She just wants to play with him, give him kisses or share her toys or snacks with him, but it's starting to get on my nerves. I just want to relax for like 5 minutes.
  • @omegarose3 we've been reading this book, I am a big brother, and there's a page that says, "When baby sleeps, shh, no noise. I quietly play with all of my toys." I swear reading it every morning worked because I repeat the phrase if DS1 is being loud or noisy when Rowan's napping and he quiets right down... most of the time. Lol. Or emphasize that could be your special time together while DS is napping...?

    DS1 7/24/15

    DS2 5/7/17

  • @omegaRose3 First day of school was a success. I think I just really lucked out on his excitement towards school. He kept saying the last 2 weeks that he couldn't wait to go back. I got all emotional leaving him but truly happy to see him so excited.

Re: toddlers and babies, that was our day yesterday. I did not go to work since DS1 only had 1/2 day school. DS2 had no concept of space or volume levels. As soon as I would finish nursing and be ready to lay DD down for a nap, he would run up to me and scare me pretending to be a dinosaur, thus waking up DD. I think we may need that Big Brother book.

  • Toddler waking up baby or being naughty while your tending to the baby... Story of my life. I don't have any suggestions because nothing is working for me. Ds2 just turned 2 so he doesn't seem to understand if he wakes baby then our play time together is shorter...
  • I think I need a big sister version of that book for DD...I don't know if it'd help, but I'd try anything about now

  • @Jens_Hoes how's the not-swaddling going?

@mcvgal how's it going now that kindergarten has started?

@OmegaRose3 how was the baby shower? What did you end up wearing?

@lrwardrop have you gotten a break this week?

  • @mrsrep123 Baby shower is on Sunday so I still have time to think it over. I'll either pick up a 1 piece from the store if I can find one that works on clearance or I'll more than likely just wear a cover...the host says there will be drinks so maybe I'll get buzzed enough that I won't care what my stomach looks like
  • @mrsrep123 ds seems to be getting back to normal. It was a rough week for sure. I've currently got both boys taking a nap at the same time everyday so the past few days I've been able to nap as well, it's been amazing!

How long are your babies sleeping at night? Every night i spend about an hour rocking Henry to sleep and he will do one longer stretch of 3 to 4hours, then he is usually up every 2. I was reading my old sleep training manuel that i used with ds1 and it says you can start at 3 months. I don't think I'll try it for a couple more weeks. I'm hoping that this baby will start magically sleeping longer this month. I guess I'm wondering if all kids require some sort of sleep training at some point or if it just will happen on its own. Ds1 was a very fussy baby and it was likely due to lack of sleep, ds2 is the same way and I'm guessing it's the same issue.
  • @omegarose3 literally lol at myself... of course the baby shower hasn't happened yet! Cheers to getting your buzz on!

@lrwardrop glad to hear it! It is seriously amazing when that happens. I actually will take a picture to document that both boys napped at the same time.

I'm lucking out with Rowan so far regarding sleeping at night. Since around 2 months, he started to go for long stretches and shortly after hasn't eaten or needed a diaper change in the MOTN. He usually will go 6-8 hours before needing a little help to get back to sleep (giving pacifier, hand on tummy). Then his brother usually wakes us all up by 7.

  • Had a productive day today! Got a load of kid laundry done, went to Costco and the grocery store, packed up 2 shelves of the bookcase, cleared out files and the pile of mail, and made DS1's smoothies for the day and pancake mix for the morning (because he hates the high setting on the blender and I don't want to deal with a hungry, crying toddler first thing in the morning). Oh, and both boys got baths and are finally asleep. *sigh* Super exhausted!

  • My baby has been on a nursing strike for a couple days now, he will only nurse in the middle of the night. When I bring him to my boob he screams and will not put it in his mouth So I've been pumping. I don't know how any mom is able to exclusively pump with more than one child. Its so time consuming! I don't know how long I'll last if my baby won't nurse anymore. With ds1 I nursed for about 8 months then pumped until he was 15 months so I have some guilt that I don't think I'll be able to do the same.
  • So I decided to go slowly and I've done one arm out for the past few nights and it hasn't been terrible. Her sleep has been the same relatively so that's good. On Monday I'll do both arms out and go from there. I imagine she won't be as successful, so we may have some rocky nights. She spends all naps on me lately so we have made zero progress on naps. Her startle reflex seems bigger during the day for some reason.

As for sleeping in general, she has slept through the night for the most part for the last four weeks or so. I know that is better than I could hope for though. She is a terrible napper and won't sleep anywhere but on me and hasn't ever fallen asleep on her own, so I guess that's the trade off.

I go back to work in 10 days and I'm so sad ! I wish I had the ability to stay home for a year.
  • We've lucked out with sleeping for the most part, he naps for about 1hr - 45mins at a time in his bassinet in our room. He will also sleep there for 6-8hrs at a time then another 4-5hrs (7pm - 8am) we haven't attempted not being swaddled yet, I need to because he is almost rolling back to front, I need to move his crib to our room first though because he wakes himself on the sides of the bassinet /sigh
