Posterior baby

Hi everyone!
I had my 34 weeks check up yesterday and it seems as though bub is posterior. This is my second baby. Do any of you have any tips on how to help bub get into proper position? Have any of you had a posterior baby, if so how was your birth experience?

Re: Posterior baby

  • Mine is in this position! Doc said maybe he will turn maybe not but either way he's coming out. She just said it can make labor a little longer butbtomd me not to stress about it.

  • DD was posterior (had to look it up, didn't realize what it meant  :D) Early labor was extremely painful in my back and she was very, very stubborn. They ended up turning her at the hospital during labor- we had no idea until we got to the hospital that she was sunny side up.

My doctor said it makes the delivery seem as if the baby is a pound bigger, which sucked for me because she was already 9lb 5oz
  • Check spinningbabies.com and they'll have tips and tricks that might help. There are also tips out there on postures to avoid to help encourage baby into the best position (i.e. not reclining, not crossing your ankles, laying on your left side).
  • Thank you so much for the advice! I am going to try whatever I can to get bub into a better position. Fingers crossed it works!
  • Spinning Babies recommendation as well, and generally being in positions that involve you leaning forward (a joke right now, I know).  DS1 was sunnyside up, and born that way, too.  Usually they turn as they come down the birth canal.  I had intense back labor, but labor overall was short (10h from start to finish), and I ended up not getting an epidural bc I progressed too quickly.

There are a lot of horror stories about OP births, and them usually ending in a c/s, but it doesn't have to be that way.  Take it all with a grain of salt, try the exercises and positions to encourage the OA position, and try not to worry about it too much.

  • DD was born face up as well, and I didn't even know until afterwards. Unlike a lot of people, I did not have back labor, so that was nice. It took about an hour and a half to push her out and I ended up with 2nd degree tearing, but I do not know if anything was really attributed to her positioning or not. She was 8#11oz, so a fair size. *shrug* Anyway, try not to worry too much. I'm actually kind of glad I did not know until later because it probably would have unnecessarily freaked me out.
