but what is your 6month old eating schedule? I feel like I'm reading too many books and I just can't seem to stick to one and go with it. I'm also trying to follow my DD's cues and everyday seems different which makes it hard to get on a consistent schedule.
We've started to introduce solids and have narrowed barley down as her cereal. Rice and oatmeal caused trouble so we decided not to push those. Now that I have that down, it's time to get to the veggies!
Let me give you our schedule first and then it will make more sense:
7am- 7oz formula
10:30am-2tbsp barley and 7oz formula (she always eats all her cereal and will either take all her formula or take 5oz...this includes the formula I put in her cereal)
2:30-7oz formula
5:30-6-7oz formula
7-bedtime
When I read books, they say to give solids 2 hours after 1st bottle and 2 hours before the next bottle. They don't tell you what to give your DC as a drink when you give them solids (formula, water, water/juice). I've tried this schedule with DD and she's just not hungry at that time. I know I should get her used to normal eating times and start creating a breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule, but I just feel like it's so much at once! New schedule, new foods, etc.
I guess my question or questions are:
What was your DC's schedule like when you started solids and how did you start setting up meal times?
What did you give them to drink after they had solids? (DD always spits up water when I give it to her)
Should I start mixing cereal with water instead?
When you started introducing veggies would you do this in the afternoon or does it matter if it's in the morning?
Was everyone else as confused/unsure as I am or am I just making it harder than it is? LOL
TIA!![]()
Re: Probably had this question asked a million times...
I just posted this earlier...here is DS's schedule. ?He is formula fed and has been on solids since 4 1/2 months.
Wake up 7-8am - 6 oz bottle
Breakfast - 9:30-10:30 - Stage 2 fruit whole container
12-1pm - 7 oz bottle
3-4pm - 7 oz bottle
Dinner 5:30-6:30pm - Stage 2 veggies - he eats 1 1/2 containers
8-9pm - 7 oz bottle?
He goes to sleep at 6:30-730pm...the later bottle I give him via "dreamfeeding"
This schedule has been working well. I tried to add a "lunch", but then he wasn't getting all the necessary formula, so I cut it out.?
I am curious to hear the responses to your questions, as well. I have been overwhelmed by what I have read and just want to decide how to proceed. Too much information in too many books! My son has done all the cereals and now onto the veggies, but I want to be sure I am doing it in a way that makes sense.
If you don't mind, I would add one question....how do Moms with kids in daycare ascertain if their child has a reaction to a new food? I know you are supposed to introduce foods in the morning, but I am at work. Do you ask the DCP to observe your child???
I read what others were doing online and adapted it to DC's needs. ?The first month I gave him formula at the same time as his solids, but now he doesn't have anything to "drink" with his food...I've tried to offer formula after solids a couple times, but he refuses it. ?They are puree's so there is water in them, and as long as your DC is eating at least 24 oz of formula, they are staying hydrated, so don't worry about them having a drink with dinner.
?The schedule we have now fills him up and he never cries for food.
My child isn't in daycare, but he's never had a reaction to ANY food we've given him (we have done all stage 1 and stage 2 veggies and fruits, plus Earths Best Rice and grain mixtures). ?We have not done meat or cheese yet.
I would just let your daycare worker know you tried something new or that they will be introducing something new and if they notice any reactions to call you and/or doctor.
I have several mommy friends and none of their children have had a reaction to anything. ?My niece had a reaction to wheat, but it was an instant reaction....nothing that happened over several days. ?I would just keep an eye out when you try a highly allergic food (grains, eggs, strawberry, etc.) most veggies and fruits aren't highly allergic - maybe do an "allergic" food on your day off so you are home with DC.?
GL?
My pediatrician told me that i could give solids before or after bottle. My DD will still drink 5 oz of formula immediately after solids so this is the schedule that works for us:
7am--1/2 jar of stage 2 fruit mixed with barley or oatmeal cereal and formula followed by 5 oz bottle
11am--same as 7am plus 1/2 jar of stage 2 vegetable followed by 5 oz bottle
3pm--8oz bottle (usually only drinks 6 or 7)
6:30-7--same as 11am
I read exactly what you read and I was concerned, but this seems to work well for my DD so I didnt want to change anything. HTH!

Thanks Cin.NJ! Sometimes I wish I had started earlier b/c I feel like at 6 months, she's so ready for everything and it's just too much at one time! I think I'm going to work on 1 meal this month, 2 meals at 7 months, and then up to 3 by 9 months.
I guess I just have to stick to my plan! LOL...that's half the battle
That sounds like a schedule that I would be able to do except I am concerned about keeping DD between 24-30oz of formula per day. This is based on her weight. They say it's so important to maintain how much formula/BM they're getting b/c that's still their main source of nutrition, but it's hard b/c when you add solids, they're little bellies get full faster!
Just go with how your DC does...what I did when I was adding a "2nd" meal was just offer a couple of baby spoonfuls at dinner until he started to hold his mouth open wanting more. ?Its all trial and error...like I said, I'd added a 3rd meal, and it just didn't work - he wasn't getting enough formula. ?
Oh - one last thing...I feed him his solids until he doesn't open his mouth and or starts to not swallow it...it just kinds falls out of his mouth. ?This is how I know he's done. ?He just started last week wanting more than 1 container - I'd finish the jar and he'd be holding his mounth WIDE open for more, so I had to start opening a 2nd jar.?
I don't know why I'm so wordy today...apparently I just felt the need to share! Sorry if I rambled too much!
Don't apologize for being too wordy...that's what I need! Thank you so much for all your help! You're right...I'll just follow her cues...that always works anyway!
