TTC After a Loss

Intro and Question

Hi!  I am moving over here from the March 2018 board.  I started bleeding 7/17 and went in and they did a US and I was 2 weeks behind based on the doc (they measure based on my period but I think I was really about 1 week behind based on my ovulation).  I continued to bleed for 10 days while waiting for a follow up US 2 weeks later.  That 2nd US showed no longer any sac but did show 8mm of uterine lining.  I opted to go natural as the doc was fairly sure I was complete.  He wanted me to come back 1 week later to get an HCG test to see if I was at a 0 yet.  I went in today and I was at a 35.

So my question is how long did it take you ladies to get back to 0?  I feel like this keeps dragging on and maybe I should have chosen a different option.  Thanks for any advice.

Re: Intro and Question

  • I'm sorry you are here and sorry for your loss. I had a CP at 5 weeks. My hcg went up to around 300 at the highest. I had a follow up OB appt 2 weeks later it was down to an 8. No further draws were needed. So it shouldn't take too long but everyone is different.

  • So sorry for your loss. For me, it took exactly 2 weeks from active miscarriage to go back to 0. I spotted for 10 days before it started it. I was almost 8 weeks along at the time of the miscarriage
  • jlo629 Sorry for your loss. My personal story won't help you much since I've never seen an hcg number in the triple digits. :(  But I do know someone who took months to have their hcg get down to 0. It depends on how high you were when you started and how long it takes your body to reset. Hopefully with your number being 35 last time, it will only be a few weeks for you.

  • @jlo629 Im from the March 2018 board also,  I'm so sorry to see you here.  I had a D&C and they haven't retested my levels yet,  but I wanted to wave frim across the room.  You're not alone.
  • Sorry for your loss. It can take awhile for your numbers to drop depending on how far along you were and everyone is different. I feel like mine are taking forever. My m/c was on 07/09. I was supposed to be 10 weeks but the baby stopped growing about 8 weeks. My HCG levels were close to 6000. On 7/21 they were down to 28, and then on 8/03 they were 3.5. I have to do another blood draw in two weeks to make sure they are at zero.

  • @jlo629 I'm so sorry for your loss. As you see from the responses we're all different. With my first pg and first loss I was approximately 8 weeks but measured around 5. I took cytotec to start the process and at that point my hcg was over 4000. By 27 days after inducing my MC my levels were down to 4 and AF started the day after I got those results. I felt lucky to have a quick recovery- but have yet to get pg again....

@jlo629 I don't really have any insight for you but wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. I was on March 2018 too, and it sucks to have to move over here. I'm wondering the same thing about HCG getting back down to 0. My dr said it could take 4-6 weeks, but I'm not sure if that's just because my HCG was really high when they checked it last week (it was about 67,000).

ETA - I just posted an intro thread, for anyone wondering who I am.
  • Thanks everyone!  I am hoping to be able to start trying again soon but feel like this process takes a long time.  I have never had an HCG level drawn before last Monday so not sure what will happen this coming Monday.  Sorry you are all here too.
  • I was only 6 weeks along when I had my ectopic and my HCG was in the 20,000s so yah, everyone is different.  I hope you decrease more quickly. I remember how frustrating it was for me. I got cheap hpt wondfos just to track on my own.  Good luck lady.
  • I am so sorry for your loss.

With my first miscarriage I was 9 weeks along and my hcg was at 100,000 the day of my D&C (which was the day after the heart stopped beating). It took me 4 weeks to get AF and it was back to 0 another 2-4 weeks after that (I can't remember exactly).

With my second miscarriage my number was much lower (under 3000) and my hcg had been decreasing for a week or so before I found out it was non-viable because my number was only 412 that day. It took me about 1.5 weeks to get down to 10 and that was the last time I was checked (Dr. said I didn't need to come in any more).

  • @tosh24 I don't want to hijack this thread with a question, but after your D&C, it sounds like you got AF before your HCG was back down to 0?  I'm tracking mine down now, and was assuming that I wouldn't get AF until after HCG was 0? I'd love to get it sooner so I can just start TTC again, so you're giving me hope!
  • pumpkinpancake  It's normal to get a second bleed after a D&C and have it not be your period.  I had weird bleeding the entire month after my D&C but my period did come, only a week after a normally expected.
  • @pumpkinpancake Yes I O'd and got my first period within 4 weeks. My hcg didn't get back down to 0 until my second (or just before my second) period. I started TTC again after my second period (so I waited one full cycle after my first AF to TTC as per my doctor....honestly, I wasn't ready emotionally or physically anyway....lots of weird pains for a couple of cycles after the D&C).

    *TW children mentioned*
I got AF back really quickly after giving birth as well with both of my kids. With my DD, I O'd within a few weeks of giving birth and had my first PP period 5 weeks after I gave birth WHILE exclusively breastfeeding. And AF was back to textbook regular from then on. Some women's bodies just get back to their normal hormonal cycles really quickly.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I also came over from The March 18th board. I had constant bloodwork at the OBGYN office which I found emotionally difficult.

We got out HCG positive on 7/18, started spotting once on 7/20 then consistently from 7/23 through 7/29. The highest my HCG got was 680, but it only doubled during the first week from Tuesday at 105 to Friday at 421. Dropped significantly in 7/28 to 139 them natural MC on 7/30. I had bloodwork about 6 times in total before it returned to almost 0 (last one was at 3 which they consider no pregnant) on 8/7.

AF just arrived for me last night. So about 23 days after my HCG was considered NP.

I hope your body heals quickly and your stay here is short.
