Length of Second Labor vs First

I keep reading that the second delivery is quicker than the first. Is this just an old wives tale?

My first labor was 4 hours which is already short. Is my second likely to be quicker?

I didn't cope well in labor and I'm so scared to do it again, and apparently the shorter the labor, the more painful it is. I'd rather 10hrs of moderate pain lol.

And while I'm posting... I'm 33wks, are anyone else's breasts leaking? Man my boobs are so sore, just the touch of my clothes is so painful. Never happened with my first...

Re: Length of Second Labor vs First

  • First labor 12 hours, second labor induced at 36+6 less than 9 hours, baby 3 15 hours induced at 28+4. My second was faster

  • #1 was 17 hrs from the time my water broke (contractions started shortly after)

With #2 my water broke but contractions didn't start on their own so I was induced 24 hrs later. From the time the induction started, it was 8 hrs.
  • Active labor for my older 2 was only a couple hours each. So the length of labor was equivalent but now delivery was half the time.
20 minutes with the first and barely 10 minutes with the second.
  • I can't really speak from experience but my first labor was 15 hours. I really hope this one goes quicker!
  • FTM so no help on the labor question, but I have been having the same nipple pain. Wearing a bra or clothes is torture with how sensitive they are right now. No leaking yet, just twinges and extra sensitivity.
  • No help with labour but yes, my nipples have been leaking for several weeks now. One of my nipples is leaking blood as well as colostrum but I spoke to the midwife and she said that it's fine
  • #1 labored for 22 hours, pushed for 2 1/2 hrs...it was bad

#2 induced labor for 6 hours, pushed for 45 min...faster

  • I am so glad someone posted this! Read my mind as I was wondering the same. This is my 2nd pregnancy.... my first I was in active labor for about 12-13 hours and pushed for 2 hours. Went into labor on my own. Hoping this time it goes faster!
  • 1st: water broke while being adjusted by chiropractor. Labored for 12 hours, 6 of which was under epidural, pushed for last 2 hours.

2nd: labored for a little under 4 hours, pushed twice and delivered. Med free, no time for even an IV.

Doctors have told me with this baby, as soon as contractions start to just labor in the lobby of the hospital. My mom labored for an hour with me before I was born so genetics may play a part
  • Thanks for the replies - seems that it could go either way?  I guess I just have to go with it, lol ~ like all women do!
  • 1st labor, 39.4 weeks, was 10 or 11 hours, pushed for about an hour and a half. Second labor, 39 weeks, water broke, contractions started 90 min later, he was born 8 hours after that after maybe 30 minutes of pushing. I'm assuming this one will be a bit shorter than the last (I'm 33.3 now).  According to the NST this morning I'm having small irregular contractions already. Also, non stress tests are sort of the opposite when you have to bring the big kids with you.
  • First labor 18 hours, no medication, water had to be broken at 8 centimeters. Baby was born after 3 hours of pushing. Second labor 6 hours total. Water had to be broken at 6 centimeters. Baby was born in the water after 3 pushes total.
