1st Trimester

Advice Needed - Teacher Mom

Hi teacher moms!!

I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my second child and I am having the worst morning sickness. During my first pregnancy, I felt nauseous and vomitted quite a bit, but I was always able to get through the day.

Now, it's just Day 2 of pre-planning and I had to leave early to lay down. I have constant (not just waves) of nausea, and extreme exhaustion (I can't stand for more than 20 minutes before needing to lay down). On top of that, I have constant headaches.

I'm drinking water throughout the day, snacking as much as possible and I've tried using preggie-pops and ginger tea and gum. At night my mom has been coming over to help take care of my daughter. I feel like I'm failing at work and home.

My doctor's office keeps telling me that this is normal, but I don't know how I'll make it through a day with students if I can't even make it through a planning day.

Anything special you found that keeps your energy up in order to keep up with our demanding job? How do you think I should handle this constant need to lay down?

Re: Advice Needed - Teacher Mom

  • @thekernfamily I was pregnant with my first during the school year.  I basically took a nap everyday after work during the first trimester - I somehow found enough energy to make it through the day.  Not sure if this will be possible for you as a STM, but maybe a super early bedtime would help.  I do think the constant attention students need actually helps versus kinda boring inservice days - no time to be tried.  Get a stool and sit if you need to.

I was lucky in that MS wasn't bad.  I kept saltines, preggie pops, water, and ginger ale in my desk in case any nausea hit during class.

  • I was pregnant with both of my kiddos through the school year. What helped me was peppermint tea in the morning to help with nausea and a Gatorade or coconut water at some point during the day to rebalance my electrolytes and help with headaches. I also usually had ginger ale on hand and that helps if I had nausea flare up in the afternoon. Some days I had to teach sitting down, and on the rare occasion we had a movie day if I lost my ability to function. I do agree with pp that active teaching days were easier to manage than in service days because those are boring, haha. I was super wiped at the end of the day and took a nap if I could (sometimes with DS when I was pregnant with number 2).

  • I did not have morning sickness with my son but I do this time, and it's been bad. I am not at school yet, but my OB recommended 1/2 a unisom and 25mg of vitamin B6 to curb the nausea. I have been taking just the B6 and it's helped a ton! Also, forcing myself to eat even when I don't want to, just a little, has been helping a ton. I would ask your OB or even call your nurse line to get their advice, especially if It's that debilitating for you!

  • I found soda to sip on helped to settle my stomach.  Gingerale and Coke were what worked for me.  Keep eating so that your stomach doesn't get empty.  Even if it's just saltine crackers.  Also, I'd tell your principal and maybe a co-worker or two so that if you do need to throw up, you have someone you can call to help you.  This will be the first time I'm pregnant and teaching, and I know that's my plan.  I go back in a week.

  • @thekernfamily I had really bad morning sickness with DS. I found a mint tea that helped settle my stomach and kept ginger altoids everywhere in my classroom. I would go to bed really early or nap when I got home if I could. I don't know what I am going to do this time around if it hits me again with the exhaustion because DS is a super active three year old. I tried to sit when I could in the classroom.

For me, at 13 weeks it was like a switch flipped and I felt great again. Hang in there!  <3
