Progesterone mamas?

Hi everyone! Admin pls delete if not allowed :) With my first, I delivered her at 35 weeks, so this time around, to avoid an early delivery, starting at 16 weeks, I need to start taking progesterone shots. Looking for any advice, tips, and tricks! Thanks!!

Re: Progesterone mamas?

  • Hey @rbs2015 I am on progesterone in oil shots (PIO) until 12 weeks (IVF baby). The needle itself looks daunting but it isn't so bad. I usually have my H do them for me because they are to be administered in the butt muscle. I can do it myself but it is hard to twist around. Word of advice - aspirate the needle (pull the plunger back after inserting to check for blood) because if you do hit a vein the oil could end up in your lungs. I have never hit one in the last 6ish weeks but I know someone who has and her doctor did not tell her to aspirate. There are lots of videos online that are helpful in terms of administration. Make sure you alternate sides, massage the area and don't ice first (it makes the oil more difficult to dissipate) a heating pad after also helps. Good luck!!

  • I am on progesterone shots as well. I have been on them since my FET on jul 31, and everything was going fine until a few days ago. Now it's like I am having an allergic reaction. I called the doctor and they said it's common... but man it's awful. I am going to see if they can switch me back to the suppositories.

As for the shot itself, I administer it to myself because I just get freaked out at the thought of my husband doing it. I'm not going to lie, it hurts, but you get used to it. I put an icepack on my buttcheek before doing the shot and it seems to help reduce bruising and swelling. They do make some sort of patches that you can use that have a numbing effect, but my insurance doesnt cover it. I got to use a trial one though and it was awesome
  • @Crystal321 what sort of reaction are you having?
  • Basically a rash, raised up like hives. Benadryl stops the itching temporarily, but the rash hasn't gone away yet
  • Oh that's a weird one!! Hope you can switch to something else.
  • I'm on pio shots too from our fet on 7/25. They have been going well but all of a sudden one side is so sore.  It's definitely worth it, but ouch!
  • Yea the longer I am on them I find that they leave like a hard spot under the skin for a couple days. I really have to be cognizant about moving the injection site around.
  • @saralee797-2 @Crystal321 Thank you for your feedback!! I've spoken to a few friends about this and the comments on the pain all are about the same. The ice packs definitely seem necessary, so thank you! It is still reassuring to get advice. I am new to this, and while it seems daunting and makes me anxious, it is obviously just par for the course and you just do what you have to do. I am thankful to have this amazing community of ladies that have gone before me. hugs to all  @jodes727
  • @crystal321 and @ rbs2015 I am all about doing whatever works for you but I read that using ice making it more difficult for the oil to dissipate and heat is actually better for PIO. I usually warm the oil beforehand (put it between your boobs or hold it in your hand for a couple minutes) and I use a heating pad on the site before and after then massage the site to make sure everything dissipates under the skin. I am sure you will find what works for you but we are here for any questions!!

Yeah I always warm it up for 30 minutes prior to injecting and use a heating pad afterward, as well as rubbing it in. I will ditch the ice pack and see how things go, but I haven't had any issues (other than hives)
  • Oh, one more important tip for the shots themselves... Do NOT tense up. I made that mistake on the first two... the first left a nasty bruise, the second one I almost fainted (I collapsed) because my legs were locked too tight for too long. Now I lay on the couch and relax as much as possible and it really helps
