bring breast pump with to the hospital?

I'm due in about 2 weeks and packing my bag.  I was thinking of bringing my breast pump with to the hospital so when I meet with the lactation consultant they can not only instruct me on breastfeeding my baby, but also about my pump.  I figure they will be billing me for the consultation anyway so I want to get the most out of it that is possible.  Just looking for opinions if this is a good idea or not.  I feel like i'm bringing a lot of stuff with.  Has anyone done this and did the lactation consultant have time to help with it?

Re: bring breast pump with to the hospital?

  • Do you have your pump already? I would read the manual and try to figure it out at home. They are pretty easy to use and takes up a lot of space lugging to and from the hospital. You could also see what brand pump they have at the hospital, a lot have similar features if you use it while there.

Also if you have any questions you can ask here.

  • The most important thing to have fit properly are the flanges. Maybe bring one or two of those for them to ensure are a good fit (some people need bigger or smaller). Otherwise as PP said breast pumps are pretty easy to figure out between he manual and a quick google search with any specific questions. Or if you have problems in the future, see if there is a La Leche League near you for advice.

  • What kind of pump do you have? I had a medela with DD and I just watched the instructional videos that they have online and that was enough. I went the lazy route because I didn't feel like reading the user manual and it was fine. Super easy and quick! I'm sure that you could find instructional videos on YouTube for whatever pump you have though. I also went back and forth on whether or not to bring my pump to the hospital. I decided not to because I felt like it was too much to keep track of. If you wanted to bring something, you could just bring the flanges to check the fit with a LC, as pp suggested.
  • I brought mine just in case DD had latch issues and I needed to pump, rather than pay to rent a hospital pump.  This time I bought my own hospital grade pump, and I plan to bring it again.

I brought the pump to the LC appointment I had after DD was born and she showed me how to use it...it's super easy though and you could totally do that yourself.
  • I took mine with me when I had my older child, because I wanted the lactation consultant to show me how to put it together.  My night nurse actually had the same pump, and she showed me.  But it would have been very easy to figure out on my own.  Being a new mom, though, I had anxiety and wanted the reassurance that I had it right.

Second child, didn't bring the pump; it hadn't even come in yet, because I knew I wouldn't be using it right away.  Difference between first kid and second.  From constant anxiety to "I got this."
