Re: Magnificent Monday or MBF

  • I'll kick us off...

Went to a baseball game today and our seats were in the blazing sun.  I put sunscreen on (including getting sunscreen ALL OVER the boob of my navy shirt), but I STILL got burned on my shoulder and chest.  It's not a bad burn, just a little pink.  But I'm still stupid annoyed, since I put sunscreen on!

  • Loading the player...
  • 5 more minutes turned into 45 more minutes.. and now I'm just perpetually behind today.
  • My apartment complex said they were going to test the fire alarms today. I didn't know that meant they would set them off EVERY TEN MINITES FOR OVER AN HOUR. I'm going to freaking kill someone if they go off again.
  • I'm starting ANOTHER week of no work. I'm a nanny, and one family is camping this week, and another always goes to Europe for July and August. It's great having so much time off, but it really gets boring after a while. Especially if I can't drink lol!  Usually, I do a camping trip or ladies boozy lunch or something. But now, nothin.
Magnificent Monday is that today I'm going to head out to Target and finish my LAST REGISTRY!  Woohoo!
And my cabinet designer just sent us the 3D images of our new kitchen and it looks even better than I ever could have imagined!  I can't wait to get this remodel project started!!!!!!

    Happy Monday, you guys!

Spent the morning carefully meal planning and then hit the grocery store. They were out of EVERY vegetable on my list. This store does most their cleaning out and restocking on Monday so I usually go on Tuesday but totally spaced it today and DD threw a tantrum so I really didnt want to try another store.
Came home and watered our vegetable garden and discovered we have several things ready to harvest, zucchini stir fry it isa
(Really first world problems over here haha)
    Happy Monday!
  • @wstacij UGH I hate that. That's like when DH wants to do our weekly grocery shop at Costco. Yes, costco is great - BUT they often don't have the specific items I want (WHY does my store not carry whole wheat flour?) or if you only want an item for one meal... you still have to buy like a gallon of it... I do not need a quart of sour cream for one night of tacos, thankyouverymuch.

  • I made it to work this morning with 30 seconds to spare. I'm pretty excited I no longer have to collect my pee today. I had to do a 24 hour collection for my OB. 1.5 hrs left of work and then I have to go home and grab the pee jug out of the spare fridge and take into the lab...I never thought I'd have to say that...haha
  • @kersey0208 24 hour collections are so awkward! I think i have to do another one next month and I'm dreaaaading it lol

Magnificent: Coming out of the fog of busy season, I've just realized that I have a bunch of vacation days left for the year. They're expiring on 9/30 so I'm taking a bonus week of staycation in September!

Edited: Replaced Winning to say Magnificent.. because it's only Monday and words are hard
  • My parents just came for a really nice visit AND
after dropping them at the airport, I stopped into Target where I discovered the Cat & Jack sets I have admired were on clearance. Yay!

Mbf: I hate eating at mil's house. Idk what it is about the older generation but they hold on to everything including the expired herbs, spices, and food. We all sat down for dinner and DH conveniently tells me *the next day* that the salad dressing I was eating was expired!!! Wtf! I had a major tummy ache that morning and woke up with a headache, and had to sit on the toilet for some time. Wtf!!!

Magnificent: All three posters for this week's conference -- including mine! -- were through legal review, approved and printed by end of business Friday.  All I had to do today is proof-read it one last time, then throw it into a poster tube and wait for Wed. No last minute nail-biting scrambles to Kinko's.  Phew!

Magnificent: Judgey McJudgeyFace OB had nothing condescending to say about my weight, for the first time in forever, at today's appointment.  Apparently I'm doing a better-than-satisfactory job at keeping my gain in line with the guidelines for my plus-sized self.  We'll just overlook the part where he seemed surprised about this, mm-kay?

  • MBF: My daughter's daycare was on LOCKDOWN when I came to get my DD. The magnificent parts are when I explained I was picking her up so she could take her medicine, they brought her out to me, and at least they have a procedure in place. Apparently a threat was phoned in. No one allowed in until they cleared it, and security and police on site. Still a little scary!

  • @sjis Ugh, older people and food. Last year DH and I went to my grandparents' house for "brunch" and when I was pouring the syrup, a large, slimy lump fell out of the bottle onto my pancake. I quietly peeked at the expiration date, it was years past. I managed to gesture to DH to only eat the bagels that had been bought that morning, and we haven't been back for food since.

Mbf: summer is my favorite season, or at least it usually is. But here in so cal we are running on over 6 weeks of 95-100+ degree weather and me and my electric bill are getting damn sick of it. I am READY for cooler weather, fall, pumpkin spice, cider, thanksgiving, Christmas trees and BABY!

Mbf2: today is officially my first day back to being a SAHM. I'm already bored and failing. It's 3:15 pm and I'm still in my pjs and haven't done a thing besides obviously feed and play with the kids. I have a good 3 hours to hurry up and vacuum, put clothes away, run to the the dry cleaners and store for a couple items, start dinner, freshen up and put a cute dress on so DH thinks I rocked it. I'll start as soon as I'm done with this thread haha.

magnificent: as per my first paragraph, I'm really looking forward to fall and of course baby time, but my calendar is filling up with fun things, trips, etc every few weeks to hopefully make the time go fast and give me other things to look forward to.

  • @ngarciabyu I so feel you on the heat. I'm in the desert in So Cal and I'm sick of it. My electric bill has been outrageous and my kids don't want to play outside so we're all stir crazy!
  • @rainbowdashh yep we are desert as well. It's been ridiculous. I'm taking the kids to my parents house to swim tomorrow because it's a good way to let the kids cool off and burn some energy. Plus I can talk my mom into watching the boys so I can grab a few things at the store ;)
  • @sjis @djd0404  YES! I so know how you feel.  Last week we were staying with my MIL whose love language is cooking-- whether we want her to or not. 3 meals a day, errryday. Like, don't even try to eat cereal for breakfast.  I know I should be appreciative of her since I grew up in a household where my mother rarely cooked, but my MIL is SO bad with food safety.  I opened a brand new thing of mayo AND salad dressing AND evaporated milk last week while we were there, and all had expired months ago. Not to mention I could tell from the price stickers that she bought them at a discount store (not a grocery store).  It's like she came of age during very lean times and still buys/preps/hoards/freezes food like it's the apocalypse. I know sell by/expiration dates on some shelf-stable things are a little flexible, but not MONTHS!! Especially when you know your DIL is pregnant.

Sorry for the rant. It's fresh on my mind and I'm just happy someone can relate because DH and FIL don't seem to care.  :#

Just FYI:  the vast majority of boxed and canned foods are good for months and even years after their "expiration" date.  I process donations at our local food pantry, so I had a long training on this.  Here's a PDF that shows what is a typical acceptable extension to the expiry dates:  https://www.licares.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Shelf_life_of_food.pdf

    some examples:
boxed macaroni & cheese: 2 years
    beans: 2-5 years
    pasta sauce: 12-18 months
    evaporated milk: 1 year

I'd stay the hell away from that mayo though!   :s

  • @Amber_Waves  I totally get that, and if that was her rationale I wouldn't mind. But she definitely doesn't know that information-- so the fact that it doesn't even occur to her to check expiration dates, etc. disturbs me!  She's just a thaw-meat-on-the-counter, lick-the-spoon-and-put-it-back-in-to-stir, let-me-reheat-this-same-container-of-leftovers-for-the-15th-time kind o' gal.
  • @elcd458- That sounds like my MIL. The last time I visited her house, she had cereal from 2012 in her pantry. Some of her spices look truly vintage. I'm always freaked out eating anything at her house. Gag!
  • It's not Monday, but I need to bitch. I love my in-laws, really, but they drive me crazy buying stuff for our house. This time, they bought a toaster (we have a toaster oven, but not a toaster, because I don't see the point in having both. My Dh is the one who brought in the toaster oven, since that is what he grew up with--I had always used a toaster--so why does his dad all of a sudden need a toaster as well?), a butter dish (because they eat toast EVERY morning and have to use real butter, so they want to leave it out so it is soft enough to spread), a glass jar to use as a sugar bowl (they both drink coffee--we don't--and use sugar every day in the coffee and sometimes in their cereal. I keep sugar in a sealed canister in the cabinet. Usually, they just fill a ramekin with sugar and leave it out 100% of the time, so I guess this is an improvement, but why can't you just take out the canister and use the sugar and put it back? or leave the canister out, even? Instead, we need a smaller jar to leave out?). The only reason we have a coffee maker is for them, and I think they are ordering a new one and a carafe to replace the one we currently have. My FIL hates overhead light, so he bought 2 or 3 floor lamps the last time they were here so he can turn on lamps instead. We definitely don't need these--our overhead lights provide plenty of light, and it's more cords/plugs for our DD to play with. Luckily, we have a lot of storage in our house, but I really don't want more stuff we don't need or use, especially with another baby on the way. They really are a big help and will come stay for a while when the baby arrives to help us out, but they also drive me a little crazy with this stuff! My MIL also bought DD several outfits for her birthday, which is very sweet, but 2 of them are white, which is not ideal for a 1-year old, and 2 of them are really nice dresses, which is sweet, but she doesn't really have anywhere to use them and she doesn't like wearing dresses lately because they make it hard for her to crawl. She is on the verge of walking, so maybe she'll like them better then. The last one is a pair of overalls she got on consignment (this is the 3rd pair she's gotten for DD--I guess she really likes overalls!) for this fall. I think they will probably still fit her then, but if not, she says, "If not, you can use them for the next one! They're unisex!" (They don't know what we're having). My Dh says, "Mom, they are blue with footballs, soccer balls, and football helmets on them. Not exactly unisex." DD will still probably wear them--nothing wrong with sports or the color blue just because she's a girl, but I still think it's funny.

  • @cait5413 sounds like you could have an awesome garage sale! My MIL cleans when she comes over, I've just accepted it now.
  • @cait5413 Your in laws sound like mine! Last time they visited they bought us a new mop and replaced the toilet seat in the basement, the time before that they bought a patio umbrella and painted our fence... BUT I have a completely different opinion on it - i LOVE it! hahaha Though they usually only purchase stuff we actually could use. I know you are just venting, and thats fine. But I think it's kind of nice that they just buy the things they need rather than bitching that you don't have it or insisting you buy it for them to have there? My MIL also insists that DS has overalls in every size :D

  • @KathrynJ088 I know a lot of people wouldn't like their MIL cleaning, but I wish people would clean when they came over! Especially after the baby is born.  With my son everyone just wanted to come sit around and hold the baby and that wasn't very helpful. This time I'm going to insist people help out if they want to come over since I'm going to have a toddler and a newborn and be recovering from a csection.
  • That would annoy me @cait5413. I'm someone who thinks about very single thing that's in my house and why it's there, and I hate when people buy me things that don't go with my decorating scheme. I'm neurotic about it, I know, but it is what it is. The small kitchen items, like sugar and butter dish, ok fine. But the toaster and coffee maker?  No thanks, guys!  That takes up valuable counter space!  Maybe it's because I live in a city with a not so large kitchen, but counter space is hard to come by in these parts!  I keep all appliances away, so yeah, that would annoy me. The lamps???!!!    NO FUCKING WAAAAAAAAAAY. That is in direct violation of my decor. No sir.
Haha I have very strong opinions about this.
My FIL stays at our house when we go out of town and he's always reorganizing things the way he likes it. It drives me nuts. Last time he actually ORGANIZED MY NIGHTATAND DRAWER. Yes. With all my goodies in it. Who TF does that???  My husband screamed at him something fierce and he hasn't done it since.
Another time he reorganized my garage and moved my bikes and camping equipment into my house for no apparent reason. That was fun to put back together after a month of traveling through Europe.
This July he reorganized my silverware to his liking.
Ugh so annoying. He's lucky I love him, because anyone else would be dead.
  • @kvacmak  to me your situation sounds different. @cait5413 's ILs are legit buying her things that they do.not.need.or.want. ... the lighting, to me, takes the cake. not liking overhead lights? and they don't even live there right? they just visit occasionally?  :|

  • @djd0404 My SIL hates havign him housesit and will never do it again. He reorganized her FURNITURE. She lost it and she's the nicest, most calm person alive.
  • @breezybee My DH and in-laws cleaned and re-organized our condo when we were about to move and I was pregnant with DD and I was so pissed about it because I couldn't find stuff, and I felt judged, and I was just emotional and stressed anyway. Otherwise, I certainly don't mind if they do dishes and stuff. Clean if you want, just don't re-organize

@kvacmak It could definitely be worse, especially if they wanted us to buy all the stuff (but we wouldn't), and they do buy us some helpful stuff--they bought DD a bucket swing for her birthday (we already had a place to hang it) and they bought us a robo vaccuum for a housewarming/baby gift when DD was born, which was awesome (we asked for it when they offered to get us something). It's the random stuff they want to make it more pleasant for them to be here that we then have to store somewhere when they're not here (which is the majority of the time) that annoys me. And it is because of my short fuse being pregnant that it is annoying me so much this visit. My patience and tolerance level drops precipitously when I'm pregnant.
