@kiwi2628 They won't cover anything until 12 months so we're back to waiting for our RE appointment in September instead of starting testing with our OB this month. It's frustrating, but it's probably the best to do everything with the RE anyways (or at least that's what I'm telling myself). Right now I'm crossing my fingers that they'll cover the blood work we already did (or the OB office will be willing to re-code it as just lpd testing if they don't).
Omg, all of those costs are making my head explode! The fertility clinic that we will likely go to has a guarantee program that I think includes 6 IVF cycles, without meds, for $22k. If you don't get KU after 6 cycles, they refund the money. It's such a hard decision, but they call it a shared risk program for a reason.
AFM: we got DH's SA results yesterday. Overall, I'm pretty happy with them, but they could be improved. here is a snapshot.
Total mL: 2.5 count: normal motility: basically normal but forward progressing was slightly under normal morph: 2%
my gyn wants to do a repeat SA in a couple of weeks. If it comes back the same without improvement in morph, she wants to refer DH to a urologist to check for issues (varicocele, etc.). If it comes back the same or worse, I would prefer to see an RE first. If you have any research on improving morph, I'm all ears!! Thank you all for your support over these past few weeks. I you all.

@BertieMeetsGertie, I hate to be a buzzkill here, but morph can be one of the hardest numbers to move. It's the one of H's that never moved up at all.
That said, it doesn't hurt to try! You could look into getting him on some vitamins. H takes coQ10, fish oil, a men's multi, and Vit C, and that does seem to have bumped his count and *maybe* his motility up some.
ETA: I should mention though, that for some people, morph seems to move a lot and can be hard to pin down an accurate picture. Hopefully this one was a fluke!
@BertieMeetsGertie As you may or may not know, DH's SA came back great on all accounts except for morph - which is 0. And as @zwink1 said, morph is the hardest to change. In fact my RE said there really wasn't a point to see a urologist. I have heard some vitamins can help improve but not by a ton.
I have DH on FertilAid (which primarily helps count and motility but has lots of good stuff in it I figured it couldn't hurt), Coq10 (with L-Carnitine) which I've heard is the best - he only takes 100mg a day now but when we run out I'm upping it to 200, and a multi vitamin.
TW TW TW 5 years ago, we had an SA done as a first line (even though we hadn't been trying long - long story) It came back normal (didn't get specifics) and we got pregnant with DS the next cycle). I'd asked the RE about that (we weren't working with this RE back then, I just asked his opinion on it) and he said most likely DH's morph was low then too) But obviously one powered through
END TW
The issue with morph is that it is harder to fertilize the egg (not impossible just more difficult) RE suggested IVF w ICSI only, gave us 5% chance with IUI. But in speaking with a TTGP grad with a similar DX and our history we're going with IUI first (starting in Oct)
Anywhoo Sorry for the novel but just wanted to share my story! If you want more info feel free to PM me!!!!
@beachbunnyxo123 Yes and no. Our insurance will cover all medications and testing prior to IVF, including the saline sono and bloodwork. However, it does not cover the IVF with ICSI, PGS, FETs, embryo storage, etc. The PGS alone is almost $6K, since it has to go to the continental US for testing. (There used to be a $2500 discount for this, but we were told that they discontinued that about 2 months ago. Ugh.) @BertieMeetsGertie That deal sounds pretty darn good for 6 cycles, even if meds aren't included.

Thanks @RVAmom315! What I find weird is this. normal morph is considered 4% and a normal count is 15M or above. So, if I'm doing this correctly, 4% of 15M/mL would be 600,000 "normal" morph sperm. If a man's count is above that and the morph % is lower than 4%, shouldn't it not be such a big deal (I.e., total normal sperm would be above that 600,000 anyway)? Maybe this is something we should ask the RE. Obviously 0% is a different story and I'm sorry you're having to deal with that specific issue. I hope the IUI does the trick if the next couple cycles aren't!

@BertieMeetsGertie I know it's crazy what a small portion is tested - my RE said they really only look at 200 sperm. If they don't see any normal forms, they look at 500. Out of 75 million (DH's count last SA). So strange
@BertieMeetsGertie You're right. What they're really looking for is your total motile sperm number. So if your total count is higher, your overall number of normal motile sperm is generally higher.
There's a calculator somewhere online that will do the math for you and tell you what the total motile sperm is. I don't remember what the link is though, and last time I went on there, it wouldn't even give me a number just a notification that it was really low. Gee...thanks.
@zwink1 yes, total motile count is exactly what I was trying to say! Ugh, that's stupid the calculator wouldn't give you a number. I found a few calculations online, one that factored in morph and others that didn't. We haven't seen DH's actual results yet (hoping to pick that up tomorrow). My gyn just called yesterday to give us some of the info. Thanks for your help!

My mind is spinning right now. I just got off the phone with my husband and his surgeon. Originally, they were supposed to do a dual retrieval at the end of this month, but I guess the surgeon--who is an expert on DH's condition--is going to be leaving at the end of the month, so they are moving DH's extraction to WEDNESDAY. This is a huge jump, since I know they really wanted the eggs ready for the sperm, but I don't start on my stims until next week. I'm guessing they will just freeze as many sperm as they can, should they find any. I'm excited that we will know if he has swimmers in less than a week (ahhhhhhh!), but nervous for how all of this is going to go down.

Lots of good news this week, I'm catching up and love titing!
Hi ladies! I'm back from my 4 days away in Dallas for convention. It.was.AWESOME!!!! An unforgettable week of motivation, partying and prizes. It kept my mind so busy all week, it was really nice.
Back to reality now and I got a BFN this morning at 11dpIUI so safe to say I'm out this month. I think we're done for a while, maybe forever. I'm so drained emotionally that I just don't have anything left to give for another disappointment. I don't want to do another medicated cycle after how terrible the side effects were with last month's IUI. I can't live like that. After we've moved and settled in, we'll probably take all our tests and get a second opinion somewhere else, just because. And maybe ask to do one last UNmedicated IUI if they'll do that... But then it'll be straight to adoption. I told the nurse during my last IUI about all my side effects from the injectibles and she just said "oh those aren't side effects, that's what supposed to happen.. It's hormones" um, really? I don't think it's supposed to make me so depressed that I can't get out of bed, or give me thoughts of suicide, or bouts of crying at any point in the day for hours on end. It was the most miserable two months of my life.
After coming home from convention and being reminded of how happy and positive of a person I normally am, it's hard to think about going down that road again. I'm in such a weird place right now, it's hard to explain. I'd chop off my left arm if it meant having another baby, but how it affected my mental health was so life altering. I never imagined the meds would affect me the way they did.
At the very least, we're definitely doing nothing for this month while we finalize on the house and hopefully move by the end of the month. The house appraised and we're just waiting on 1 more paper to come in from the town and then we're clear to close! I'm so excited. Financially, we need to see how our expenses look after moving as all we've been doing is draining our account. An unmedicated IUI will be a bit cheaper but probably still around $1k OOP compared to the $2500-3000 we've been paying per cycle.
Got nothing but love and hugs for you @TravelingCouple I'm sorry about the test this morning. I was rooting for you so damn hard this month!! I hope your last steps with the house go smoothly and everything from there can somehow fall into place. I am glad you had an amazing time in Dallas! Sounds like it was much needed, especially to get away from it all!
@TravelingCouple So sorry for the BFN. That's such a tough decision to stop treatment - even if it's temporary - but it sounds like you are in a good place with your decision. That's great you had so much fun in Dallas, and I'm hoping the next month brings you so much joy as you move into that awesome new home!
@50Wife@madspunk thanks ladies I was rooting really hard for me this cycle too. I really thought this would be it. First IUI cycle didn't work, but surely the second would! Nope. I'm just trying to choose to be disappointed (understatement) but move on. If I start to wallow, it's a dangerous path for me that takes weeks of recovery. This sucks. Big time sucks. But I'm grateful to have the house to look forward to and there's nothing I can do right now anyway except choose how to react to an awful situation of not being ktfu. Silver lining, now I can pack and move boxes without worry.
@TravelingCouple I'm so sorry for the BFN, and sending you all the hugs. I'm so glad you had fun in Dallas and have your house to look forward to, and that you are choosing to focus on the positive. And you know we will be here for you for whatever, whenever
(((Hugs))) @TravelingCouple I am excited for you guys with the house, and sorry you're feeling such depressive thoughts, side effects or no. I confess I have had times I may have had scary thoughts at certain times, but you are doing the healthy thing to air 'em out and obviously not ACT on them in any way. Besides maybe calling a friend, reaching out to a professional etc. Those thoughts doing have any power over us if we take healthy steps in the opposite direction. And you DO have so much exciting going on to be hopefully over!!! Hormones can do a number, for real, so just remember that and try your best not to give them power. ❤ have fun packing!!! That will keep you plenty busy ;)
@TravelingCouple It's been a hard road for you but I am so glad you are taking care of yourself and prioritizing your health and sanity first! And of course I second everything @BusinessWife said
@TravelingCouple I'm so sorry about your failed IUI, I was so hopeful that this was your month. It sounds like you and YH have a good plan to move forward though.
@TravelingCouple I was really hoping that this would be your month, too. It's really upsetting that the nurse was so dismissive of the side-effects of the medication, especially anytime there are thoughts of suicide involved. While hormones can have a huge impact, that doesn't mean you just shrug your shoulders and insist that it's how it must be. I'm glad you are feeling more like yourself again. (It's such a breath of fresh air when you find yourself "return" after being in a position like that!) Enjoy your house and I hope the last of the paperwork goes very smoothly.

Right now, we're going to focus on our house.
I am glad you had an amazing time in Dallas! Sounds like it was much needed, especially to get away from it all!
