Choroid Plexus Cyst

Isolated Choroid Plexus cyst. Any experience? Feeling very anxious.

Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

  • Hi @sammarah. I don't have any experience with this, but I hope everything turns out well for you.

I did see a post from @dragonfly87-2 who is due in November that she has one. Maybe she has done some research/talked to her doctor and you guys can message about it? (I hope it's okay I'm tagging you here, dragonfly!)

  • My LO has one, maybe two. Did they find it on your anatomy scan?
  • From what I understand, they aren't really worrisome until after 32 weeks and are usually gone by then. Are you getting a follow up ultrasound to check it again? I already see an MFM for other issues and I have an ultrasound at 28 weeks to look at baby's heart so I think they'll look at it again then and probably another time. Try not to dwell on it too much, did you get a quad screen?
  • Yes they found it on the anatomy scan.
I had a first trimester screen, not quad but similar, that put me at low risk. And all the rest of her anatomy scan was fine, set aside the cyst.
  • The doctor did not state any plans for a follow up. He didn't really discus it much at all other than to confirm my risk level from first tri. I suppose that's reassuring but at the same time not because I was left without answers.
  • That does sound promising although I do hope they take another look at it before birth just so you get some relief. It's hard not knowing
  • 100% agree, just for peace of mind if nothing else. I know I will have another ultrasound before 36 weeks because baby was breach at the anatomy scan and for reasons unknown to me my dr was more concerned about that then the cyst...
  • I felt like my dr was really casual about it too, so I'm really hopi g that means I shouldn't worry.
  • @MJDsquared No worries on the tag. I have done a bit of research and talked with my doc, so hopefully I can be a little helpful to @Sammarah
  • @dragonfly87-2 do you mind just posting here in the thread? First, because I also have this going on and am interested in what you have to say but also in case other mom's search it.

@jlemons-2  I am not sure if it is super helpful, but here is what I have gleaned from the help of other bees and my OB:

Choroid plexus cysts occur in 1-2% of all pregnancies and typically resolve themselves by 28-32 weeks, without any residual issues or concerns. My OB said that finding a CPC is not a concern in of itself and typically only a concern if it persists beyond 32 weeks or there are other markers in addition to it. For example, if there were markers of Trisomy 18 (clinched fists, delayed fetal growth, nasal plate abnormalities), that would warrant further testing and concern. However, if initial nuchal translucency and first trimester screenings or other genetic tests come back normal, the finding of a CPC is generally not concerning.

This article is pretty helpful as well: https://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/Images/GEN_US CPC handout_tcm63-15061.pdf

Honestly, it still causes me some anxiety, but it is just a wait and see situation. We could have opted for more genetic screening (like a CVS), but our OB didn't think it was necessary at this time. Another bee said her son had 3 CPCs and they all resolved on their own and he has no issues.
  • Thank you, I understand how hard it is to wait. I will check back in here after my next appointment and encourage you to do the same.

@jlemons-2 @dragonfly87-2 chiming in to let you know that with my DS who was born in Aug 2014, i had the same diagnosis at my anatomy scan.

I echo what dragonfly said about having no other markers, it is usually nothing to worry about. They did send me for a level 2 ultrasound 2 weeks later with a specialist, and she concluded that i was very low risk and most likely there would be no complications.

fast forward to August and he was born healthy as can be with no issues related to the cysts.

    I hope this helps you!

  • Had the same thing with my first daughter. Had another ultrasound at 32 weeks and it was gone!
