Painting rooms while pregnant?

Does anyone get overly paranoid about paint fumes, or is it just me? My husband and I have been remodeling our house for ages and now it's finally time to paint! This means the nursery room, too!! :) I want to paint because my husband does pretty much all of the hard work, plus I enjoy painting. My OB said that most interior paints are okay if they're low fume and water based. I think acrylic latex paint falls into the safe zone, but I noticed I accidentally bought some enamel paint as well. I've used it before (before I got pregnant) and it is very low odor. However, I don't know if it's water based and/or if enamel paint is safe to use. It's Pittsburgh brand, with the primer and paint all in one. FYI, I'm 25 w 2 d preggo. Anyone have any knowledge on the subject? Thanks!

  • Hey there.
I read that as long as its not lead based and the area is well ventilated that you and baby should be perfectly fine. I paint in my spear time and right now I use water color paints but I limit the time I spend painting. You just dont want to spend too muxh time around paint fumes or be in an environment that's not ventilated.

I painted using no-VOC (not just low VOC) but paranoid me still worried about it. Everything I've read said it's fine. FYI on no-VOC paints, they are thinner, so you have to do more coats. I think I had to put on 5 coats when regular would have been 3 max (went from periwinkle room to light yellow).

  • Just chiming in on the matter of paint to add (if it helps anyone) that althought prime+color paints (all in one) are a little more expensive.... They actually work and save a lot of time. One coat only and i went from dark brown to cool beige.
  • I think you should be okay as long as it is well ventilated and if you start feeling bad just rest. I used an oil based primer a couple weeks ago to paint our wood trim white and the primer fumes did make me a bit lightheaded and nauseous after a while, so I don't know that I'd recommend using oil based but other types shouldn't be so bad.
  • Thanks everyone! I did use low VOC paint and didn't get lightheaded at all. It really barely smelled. I was able to do both our bedroom and closet. Now I just need to do the nursery! Not enough hours in the day! I think they make paint pretty safe nowadays :)
