Anatomy Scan Redo

Anyone have to have their Anatomy Scan redone? Mine went well yesterday at 20w3d, but we have to go back in 4 weeks to get better pics of the heart. The tech was telling me that getting a repeat anatomy scan for the heart could happen, that it was fairly common and not to worry about it...but it almost seemed like she was trying to over sell it. The doctor said it was so we can get better pics of the heart. Am I thinking too much in to this and worrying over nothing? Is this really just a common thing? Thanks so much.

Re: Anatomy Scan Redo

  • It could very well be a positioning issue. My baby wasn't in the best position to get pics of the heart so the technician had me go use the restroom so see if that would help. He did end up moving and they were able to get the heart photos.
  • I had to go back with my second baby. She wasn't in a good position and the tech couldn't get the pictures of her heart that he needed. I would say not to worry. If your doctor was truly worried, they would say something to you.

I have to go back a second time for this baby too.

  • I had the same issue today at my anatomy scan and have to go back in 4 weeks for pics of heart because baby wouldnt move arms from her chest.
  • I had to have my scan redone with my first pregnancy and again this time. Both times the baby was too curled up to see either the face or the heart. I guess I just grow cozy babies?
I'm just excited for another chance to see baby, really no reason to be stressed if everything had been looking good with the first scan.
  • My cousin had to do this with both her babes. It's not unusual. Nothing to worry about!

  • With my daughter I had to go back again for her a/s.  She was not cooperating and they could not count her heart chambers/get good pictures of the heart, etc.  So we had to go back-but it fell around christmas time and the wait was really hard.  I totally understand you worrying, and will be thinking of you for a successful scan next time!  Hope that baby is being extra photogenic!  :)

  • I have to go back in a couple of weeks too, but not specifically for the heart. One of the twins was curled up and they couldn't get good measurements.
  • Next week will be my third time going back to get a better view of her heart. She is a very active baby and even with turning on my side and using the restroom, she hasn't cooperated. They did get a good view of the right chamber last week, so hopefully next week they finally get to see the left part of her heart. Try not to worry about repeat ultrasounds unless they tell you to worry.
  • We had a successful scan and the babies looked fine, but they want me to come back in 4 weeks for a shorter ultrasound. I think it was mostly because I had a low-lying placenta and because I'm having twins, so they just want to do a quick check on the babies and see if my placenta's moved up at all. That's with a MFM and I'll also be seeing my OB in a couple of weeks, so I'm just happy that I'll get to see or hear them multiple times over the next month.
  • I just had my second scan yesterday because they couldn't get all the heart measurements the first time. I saw my OB in between, and she said they didn't see any issues with the heart, but they have to check off all the specific measurements on their sheet. She said it's very common. Luckily baby was in a better position yesterday, so all measurements were captured. I wouldn't worry. In my first scan, the lab tech freaked me out by starting with  "you're going to have to come back for a follow up - baby's not cooperating, so I can't get all the measurements". Those two statements should have been switched around, as I had a sudden panic while he explained. No bedside manner!
  • I had my scan this morning and they couldn't see the heart well. My dr preferred I go back at 30 weeks to have a redo.

  • A redo is pretty standard. If they saw something worrisome, like they did for me, they would be moving on to a fetal echocardiogram. It sounds like they just need to get pictures to check everything off the list!

  • Yup I go again next week for the same reason :) I would not worry too much !
  • I have to go in to get some more pictures of the heart at a specialist this week since baby was all curled up and made it hard. They also want to look at my placenta previa. No worries at this point though.
