I had a membrane sweep with my son. I asked for the sweep, the Dr said you're not even 1/2cm dilated so I won't be able to do it. Then ends up doing it. So I was caught off guard but I ended up nearly jumping off the table. It was very painful. But I didn't have any BH contractions before that and they started that night but I was already in the hospital having cervadil so that could have been causing the mild contractions as well, hard to tell. so put it this way, it hurts but not nearly as bad as labor.
ETA: piggybacking off @Cait my cervix was not soft and I was not effaced at all so I think that makes a huge difference too.
I had one with DD where I was 2/50, not uncomfortable at all and sent me into labor. This one I was 3/80, I nearly jumped off the table (it was the same doctor as the first) and also sent me into labor about 5 hours later. I had a third one done when I got to the hospital because my labor stalled and I was 4/90 and it was painless and got me going again. It also depends how posterior your cervix is, it comes forward the closer your cervix is to labor. If it's super posterior and they're reaching to your tonsils it's going to be uncomfortable regardless of how dilated you are. Good luck!

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
I had one at 40+2 when I was only 1cm. It was moderately uncomfortable, and I had cramping and spotting for a day but that's it. I went into labor at 40+6.
I had one at 38+5 and had some bleeding and cramping for 2 day, then my water broke and labor started shortly after. I was 2 cm and 50% effaced at the time and it wasn't super comfortable but wasn't terrible either.
I had one at 39+0 (1cm/40%) and one at 39+4 (2cm/60%). My cervix was soft and anterior both times. Neither was comfortable, but also neither were painful. Just... Crampy... for a few seconds.
I had one done with my son. I don't remember all the information with the dilation or if I was effaced but the doctor did it and I went for a long walk that day to Petco. My mucus plug came out maybe 3 hours later. The next day I was cramping up so much and at midnight my water broke. I was in labor for about 5 hour s and had my son at 8am. I'll be asking for another sweep this Friday. I'll be 39 weeks. I'm currently 50% effaced and 2cm dilated. I've been been drinking rasberry leaf tea and primerose oil.
Had a sweep yesterday mid day, I'm 40 and 4 days (Today). I was 1cm and 80% effaced. My cervix is still tilted way back and so it took my doc a full minute of digging to do the sweep because she could barely reach. It was incredibly uncomfortable but from some reading it sounds like the tilted cervix prob didn't help that. Had inconsistent contractions for about 2 hours after and cramping, spotting since. Fingers crossed this little babe shows up soon. I've crossed into the "I'm over being pregnant" phase. Good luck ladies.
Haven't been told to get a sweep but also 40+4 and having painful contractions for days. Sooooo over this. My body is just exhausted from the pain and my mind is exhausted from all the false alarms.
I had one.....I went into labor that weekend.....so it worked. I did have quite a bit of blood a few days after --like enough I called the doctors' night time line. It was more than a pantyliner and just kind of thick but not more than a pad. Do ask your doc about blood and amounts, but anyway--I did go into labor. I was at 2 cm and 50% effaced when I had the sweep. It hurt but my baby's head was super low, so every exam hurt. I just breathed in and out and grabbed the table. Always keep more pantyliners in your purse for final obgyn fun.
I had a sweep done at 2 pm on the 18th - not painful just uncomfortable. I started having contractions really bad every 3 minutes & by 2:30 am I was admitted into L&D
