  • I'm much less fit now than I was going into my first pregnancy (such is the life of a toddler mom/end-stage PhD student), so I'm making an extra effort to do a bare minimum of 30 minutes/day of activity that elevates my heart rate (i.e. 30 minutes of speed walking while pushing DS in the stroller.)  Fatigue hasn't hit yet, but when it does I will still try to take 30 minute walks, even if they're slow, sluggish ones and DH pushes the stroller.
  • This is my "recovery" week, and honestly, I really don't love it. I have found that I am tired either way, hard workout or not, and I feel better in my body when I workout. I know it's good for my body, so I do it, but I'm looking forward to getting back to a bit more working out this week for the mental kickback I get.

I ran this morning, and I'm slow, but I ran. Post-run feels really good, so I'm happy about that. I plan to either swim and bike tomorrow or bike and run. Either way, I like the "brick" style workout because it keeps my workout from getting boring.

I think I'll do an easy swim on Sunday, too, for my rest day. It just feels good to get in the water and move.

I'll run Monday, lift upper body Tuesday, lift legs on Wednesday, lift upper body on Thursday, and run Friday. Right now, I haven't plugged in swimming days during the week, but I'd like to have 2 days of swimming in the evening, too.

I liked this article because it's short and sweet, and has good information to calm fears that are common in the first tri:

  • For the first time since July 1, I went back to Crossfit yesterday for my birthday. Decided to treat myself. It went well and I am sore today. I can tell I haven't worked out in 3 weeks though, lol. I went lighter with the weights than I normally would have but I still got a nice workout in. I benched for strength, which I thought I would have lost not being there for almost 3 weeks, but I killed it! Then we did handstand holds, push presses, and slamball shoulder rolls. Baby G seemed to enjoy it, too. She/he let me know that by not making my throw up, so I took that as a good sign. The biggest challenge was to continue to keep moving. I still feel so tired but I'm glad I did it. After the workout I laid on the ground trying to catch my breath. My husband came over, high fived me and told me I just reduced the risk of the baby getting asthma. (If that's really a thing or it could have been his way of making me feel better.) Either way, I was glad to be back at the gym and to see everyone! I can't wait to get back to the  normal schedule of things, going 3-4 times a week instead of twice a month. I also slept very well last night, but then again I was wiped by the time I got home and showered!
  • I did get to the gym this week, but all I could muster up was some bike and light weights.  My diet has been terrible and I feel so drained.  My husband asked if I was going to do my hair today and I already replied no.  You can imagine what my energy level is like.  I am just going to try to survive this week and hope next week is better.
  • @DDRRT1982 you're doing a great job just getting to the gym and moving! Cut yourself some slack; that's more than many people do who aren't pregnant!! I felt the same way about doing my hair yesterday--messy buns for life  Own it

I've been making a huge effort to go on a 2+ mile walk with the kids in the double stroller at least 4x/week, but holy hell is that kicking my ass. Like I feel like my body is falling apart right now. I'm wondering if that's due to potentially being dehydrated (the heat and humidity are out of control) so I'm being even more diligent about water intake. These early weeks are such an energy drain, though, and I can't wait for the second tri turbo boost!
  • I also am going into this pregnancy less fit and 10 lbs heavier than my first one...so am nervous I'm going to balloon! I taught 2 fitness classes this week (TBC & Chisel), but it was a struggle as I am really struggling with nausea, any tips on how to stay active while feeling like you're going to be sick at any moment?
  • @mountain_girl I eat an apple before I work out! It keeps my tummy at ease and I just take it slow and listen to my body.
  • Hi everyone, I love this thread and find it really inspiring. Those of you with kids and who work (I work three days a week), when do you schedule your exercise? If I take my son to the park, I'll take a detour and walk/run there, and since getting my BFP have occasionally run to work. I find it hard to fit in, but am determined to be fit this pregnancy - any suggestions are really appreciated!

My favorite time to workout was before work.  It gave me energy for my 12 hour days.  Now, I just go when I can and set no expectations.  I am still trying to go before work which is three times a week.
  • @huckleberryy I can't legit work out in the evening, because it makes me wired and I can't sleep. Unfortunately, evening is the only time I have to schedule exercise. DS wakes up easy too early for me to work out in the morning. This is the main reason I'm not super fit right now, because all I've been doing are long vigorous walks. Better than nothing, though.

@huckleberryy I have to work out first thing in the morning (after some toast now). I am a teacher and a coach, so during the school year, I get up around 4:10 and head to the gym. On a match night, I don't get home until close to eleven or midnight, so the schedule is hard to balance, but I am a better mom when I take that time for me and my body! I will always be a morning workout person; I've tried all other options, and this is the only one that works for me and my busy schedule. I am tired by the end of the day no matter what, so a morning workout at least gives me that extra pep in my step throughout the long day!

  • DS is 14 months and I've had a heck of a time with exercise the last year. I struggle with exercising in the parameters of SAHM time. He doesn't do well in my gyms daycare so every time I've tried to bring him (which is maybe like 20 times total) it's a hot mess and feels like such a hassle. And during nap times I want to either clean the house or relax. So I've been sort of a sporadic exerciser. I've decided I really need a routine. My pregnancy was very difficult last time and I think I can make this one at least somewhat more enjoyable by sticking to a fitness routine. I can't believe it, but I went to the gym and at 5am today!! I'm going to try my hardest to go at 5am M-F. It was a great start to the day and a great excuse to go to sleep early last night. I hope I can keep it up! I'm really feeling motivated to be healthy and active this time around.

I was super active my first pregnancy (spinning classes until around 30 weeks, when my doctor told me to back down) but working full time and having a toddler has seriously impacted my routine. I've been fighting a cold for the past 2 weeks and now nausea has kicked in big time, but I think I'm going to try to go for a jog this evening. You all have me inspired.
  • This week has been dedicated to arms.  It feels great when I'm done.  I feel like my energy level is coming back.  I'd like to get back to my walk/jogging.  My nausea and headaches were at an all time high this week.  Today was the first time I've felt good.  Crossing my fingers at keeping the workouts going.

Everyone in here is fabulous!  So motivating!
  • Hi everyone, thank you for the suggestions. I'm super impressed by the incredibly early mornings!!!

Went to boot camp this morning. I'm going tomorrow as well. I skipped Tuesday and felt bad about it, but I was already feeling lightheaded/dizzy and with a heat index of 99 I just didn't think it was a good idea to be working out outside.

I told my trainer that I'm pregnant today and she's very excited. She's the first person I've told other than DH and my F15 BMB moms. She told me that someone else in our group is also pregnant, but couldn't say who yet. I will be watching everyone closely in class now because I really want to figure it out, lol! But I'm excited to have someone to go through this with and can't wait to find out who it is.
  • @LiveNLove44 such a good point!!! I'm going to be exhausted no matter what, I may as well get in a work out first thing before the exhaustion can set in!
  • Oh, UGH! I forgot to complain about my gym :) I just moved and the Lifetime here is way nicer and they told me if I switch the monthly fee will increase by $40/month!!!!!! That is just too much for me to handle when there's no actual change from my perspective. There is a Y literally 2 minutes from my house and I think I'm going to join there instead!! Way easier to get there at 5am, too!

    eta: tagging you doesn't work!

Kit&Cat does your insurance reimburse you $20 if you go at least 12x a month? Many do, in which case the Lifetime membership wouldn't be as crazy.

With that said, we are members at our local "nice" fitness facility because my husband is a personal trainer, but we are also members at the YMCA. I love our Y because it is geared toward community building and families. It is perfect for my kids! I would say that if your Y is cheaper and more convenient, it's a great option and you'll save a ton of money!

  • You ladies impress me so much!!!

History: Before I had DS, I worked my butt off to become a fit person. I lost 30lbs and started running half marathons. I'm 2013 I ran my first one with a time of 2:39. In 2014 (after my weight loss) I ran it in 2:02. I was a runner!!!!

Then I had my son and I have struggled ever since with my weight and getting back into fitness.

So, while I am super impressed with all of your goals and accomplishments, I am humbly sharing my goal:

I don't want to gain 70lbs this pregnancy like I did with DS, so I am trying to really watch my diet. I don't want to start doing crazy exercises since I wasn't before pregnancy, but I need to do something!

My goal this week (and I need some accountability), is to walk 3x this week (30-60 minutes). My plan is to go Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings and make this consistent.

    Looking forward to checking in!
  • @justkeeptrying, I think a lot of people can relate to that journey, and I assure you that you aren't alone in this! Your goal is a great way to keep activity attainable and part of a routine. You're spot on when you talk about diet being a big part of weight gain and maintenance. What we gain will have far more to do with how we eat than it will with how we move. The payback for activity will payoff when we are in those final months, as you know, and the months after birth. Your body will thank you, and your two LOs will, too!!!

  • I really like this list of reasons to get moving during pregnancy! I had a wiped out, totally exhausted day yesterday, so I took it as my body's need for a rest day. Today I ran, and I feel so much better! I needed a little extra motivation to get over the low-motivation bump, and I found it here: https://www.fitpregnancy.com/exercise/prenatal-workouts/33-reasons-exercise-now

I've had two active pregnancies, and I don't plan to let it all go now. I hope you'll join me on this journey!

  • This week was a complete disaster for my workouts. Monday I was unpacking and putting away a bunch of stuff so I was really active all day. Tuesday I got up and spent 35 min on the elliptical. Since then I've been really lethargic even though I didn't even feel that bad most of the week. Now I'm feeling sick and run down and I'm so disappointed in myself. I really want to keep up running but the heat index has been around 110 and... no thanks. I was running about 15 miles a week and now I feel like a giant, unhealthy slug.

  • @notthefather I love to workout outdoors and it's been so hot here too!! There was an excessive heat warning from Wednesday through Saturday last week, and it got up to 108!! Jeesh!!

I love PopSugar Fitness videos on YouTube (I put them on the big TV in the living room!). They have a ton of videos that don't require any equiptment and just use body weight. There are strength training and cardio, anywhere from 5 minute videos to 1hr cardio sessions. I seriously love it!! It's hard to get the motivation to work out in my house but after I've done one of those videos and I'm drenched in sweat I always feel so good!! :-)
  • Here we are at Monday! Did anyone have any small wins this weekend? Big wins? What's on the agenda for today?

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Small wins for the weekend include getting in a 30 minute walk each evening, including yesterday when it started to rain half way through, but it just just a drizzle so I kept going.

Agenda for this week.  Ugh, more 30 minute walks.  I just hate boring exercises that you find little videos of online.  I don't care if I can do them at my desk in 15 minutes, they are so boring and I don't want to do them!  What I really want is a heavy bag to hang in the basement of our new house so I can hit the bag while doing laundry.
  • I went to my workout group this morning at 6 for TRX day! First time in 2 weeks, even though I had to take it really slow. Because of the bleeding I had and my low progesterone, I'm only cleared to workout as long as it's no impact, low intensity, and low weight so I have to take it super slow. It's going to be hard for me to not go all out! But it's only for a few more weeks! It felt so good to go this morning.
  • Today is much cooler so I actually powered through the overall shitty feeling that is my new normal and got a 3 mile run in this morning. It was really slow but I finished it and I feel so much better.

@wisewitch222: 30 min a day is fantastic. I also don't like video workouts. I never feel like I'm doing them right and spend so much time looking at what I'm supposed to do that I miss a lot of the actual workout.

@arhodes6: Good job getting back out there! It's hard to work around those restrictions.

  • @arhodes6 just being there feels good, right? There's something about getting to the gym or being surrounded by people who are being active that kind of wakes me up a bit or something. I'm glad you were able to go!!

@notthefather thank goodness for cooler weather! I was pregnant with DD (born on 8/29) in the summer, and I remember the swelling nearly killed me by the end. This time around, I haven't had it too bad, but it sounds crazy hot for some mamas here!! Praying for more cool air your way!

@wisewitch222 any walk is better than no walk! Great movement for the day

@LiveNLove44 you are so right. My workouts are my social time and my me time before DS and I tackle the day. I'm even though I have to go slow, I still had a great time chatting with the ladies and being around strong women who are there to better themselves! Kind of like this thread
  • I hit up the gym at 5am yesterday and today!! Yesterday was arms, today legs... I just need to keep getting up and going because it's only going to get easier and I feel really good after. I also don't feel like I need caffeine when I start the day at the gym and that's a huge PLUS!!
  • Home workouts! I used to not think I would see results. But I am exhausted and have a 22 month old. Morning 30 mins workouts are my goal
  • Woohoo... 10k steps in yesterday. Small victories.
