Doula?!

So we just met with a doula, that I'm sure we will go with, for the first time! I wasn't sure if any questions to ask or if I should know more about her personally? She's pretty young but that doesn't bother me. Can you think of anything I should ask?!
She is just starting so she is offering services for free to get all of her hours for certification.

Re: Doula?!

  • We had a doula with our son! Ask what services she would provide before, during and after the labor. What would her comfort measures look like during labor? How many hours can you expect? How will she respect your wishes regarding medication?

my friend is also a doula and I remember when she was looking to help couples for fires to get hours for her certification. If you get along and you like her personality, I feel like you really. Can't go wrong since she's free!

Cautionary tale (not scary or anything): I hired a doula last time but it really didn't work out for me. I started knowing I was going to need to go to the hospital in the middle of the night but tried to sleep through it. I woke DH up at 6:00 and told him it was time to go, and at that point I called the doula. Maybe I should have called her earlier but it was overnight and I was trying to get some sleep. So that's my first point- find out WHEN to call. By the time I ever saw her, it was already at like 9 AM and we were at the hospital, when I had already been in pain and accepted an epidural. There was little she was needed for at that point. To be fair - it turned out the doula we had hired had her mother die that night so she had to send a sub (the didn't tell us at the time why there was a sub, they said she was sick I think) - so that probably delayed things in getting her there. Anyway, timing is everything, because if your labor is fast she needs to be able to get there in time to help you. Even if your labor is not fast you will want her there for those first few hours and not just near the end.

  • That's a good point! I mostly want her for the pain at home and trying not to get an epidural so having her come meet us last minute wouldn't help too much.

  • Can I ask how you found a student/new doula?  I am open to the idea of a less experienced doula to save some money but still have some help during labor.

She had posted in my local birth community group on Facebook offering her services. I just reached out and said i would like to meet and then possible have her. One of our hospitals here also works with doulas in training so they have them available to you through he hospital. Check with your local doula companies and see if they have anyone still needed hours for certification or ask around some local moms may know where you can go.

That's awesome that she is free!! We loved having a doula with our first. We asked about how often we can reach out. What happens if she can't make the birth. What will the post-partum care look like.
I think our doula was anti-vax but it didn't really make a big difference because she didn't have much contact with the baby.

I had a doula with my first and will definitely have one again. I will say that in my experience, if you are going to give in to the epidural, having a doula there or not probably would not have made a huge difference. That decision is solely on you.
You can think of 1,000 questions to ask and be interested in all the different services provided, but when it came down to go time the best thing my doula did was shove a fist into my spine at the right time. And I mean that in the best way possible.
