Give me some ideas on how to get organized!

Ok I'm really struggling with getting the needed energy to get everything ready for the baby. I'm kinda freaking out as Sep -Oct will be increasingly busy at work so I kind of just have August to really get set up and I don't know where to start. I should know this as I have done it before but it just seems overwhelming this time around.

So ladies, give me your tips and ideas on what you are doing to get everything in order. I'm not looking for the list of things to buy or registry etc. I'm sorta asking about how are you prioritizing the to-dos, what are you addressing first, then after, tools, apps or checklist tricks you are using etc. anything that's helping you prepare for the baby step by step.

I made a list of things I need to do but all I have been doing is staring at the list for last two weeks and cannot figure out where to start. Any ideas welcome! And I am hoping this will help everyone else too.

Re: Give me some ideas on how to get organized!

  • I made a list. I basically have two categories: 1. Major House Projects  2. Baby specific. Then I am breaking it down by priority. For example, our deck needs to be reinforced and this has to be done before the weather turns so that's a priority. I am also breaking it down by things I want/need to do versus things I might be okay getting help with from DH. I don't know if that helps at all! I feel a little overwhelmed as we have some major house projects that need to get done this summer in addition to tasks to prepare for baby. We also don't have family nearby so we don't have anyone to help with things like doing the deck or cleaning etc. All of my friends who have had kids are really lucky and their families have helped before the baby came. Oh, I also set deadlines in my phone and shared calendar with DH.

  • @jess0211 very helpful. I did not think of breaking up or categorizing my list. Maybe that's what I should do.
  • I'll be stalking this thread to help us get organized too. (Any advice on fitting baby stuff into a 1 bedroom apartment is greatly appreciated!)

Beyond that, I'm trying to break my list into "must happens" vs "nice to happens", and prioritizing things that are "musts". I'm also putting timelines on them. For example, daycare tours and waiting lists need to be completed by end of August. Signing up for a birthing class needs to happen in the next two weeks, with the class around end of August, beginning of September. I keep a running list on my phone, and I've delegated some stuff to DH.
  • I love lists! I made a list for each room/area of our house. Then I broke that down into "to-do" and "to-buy". From there, i figured out what I could do and what I needed DH to do (he's very handy), and wrote our initial next to each item so we know who needs to tackle what. Then, I prioritized the list by things that I want done now vs things that can wait a little longer. I picked a room to start with (for me, my kitchen) and I've been working my way through the house.

For the "to-buy" items (not baby registry items-just things needed for the house), I broke that list down by what store I need can get the items at and when I go to one of them for other things, I pick up those items, throw away the list and move on.

I also keep a running list of phone calls that need to be made, keep it on my fridge, and I update that as the calls are made. (For things like appointments, insurance, pharmacy, etc)
  • @cmessamore wow that's an impressive way to handle an overwhelming amount of things.
  • @RiverSong15 we're also struggling with fitting baby stuff in a one bedroom apt.

We have a chest in our foyer/entryway that will be replaced with a 6 drawer dresser topped with a changing pad. We'll also do a major closet cleaning. There's an Ikea home tour video of a makeover of a "family bedroom". Two parents and two kids share the one bedroom! It's one of my favorite vids and super inspiring, even though we plan to move our bed out to the living room and treat the living area as a studio eventually.
  • Space saver bags should help! I got some on Prime Day.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

I also made a list.  For the most part, our projects are house related.  I didn't get crazy with it, just wrote them down as I thought about them.  My husband is tackling the hardest projects first while I am tackling the easier projects (nice partnership huh?!?).  As far as baby purchases, I made a secret registry on Amazon so I can get the completion certificate.  We are ordering things here and there (we really didn't need much as our son isn't quite 2 yet).  That list is easily accessible and we are whittling it down every week or so.  We also made a trip to Ikea for storage bins and such to help encourage the furious nesting in me :)
