Travelling to Orlando in a few weeks - any concerns for Zika?

Hi Everyone,

I'm due January 9th and am currently scheduled to go to Orlando, Florida the week of July 24th for work. My fertility specialist gave me the OK (twice) to go to Orlando, but by regular OB i still wary about Florida in general. I've done a ton of research and have kept up to date with the CDC website which says there are no longer any zika areas in Florida (Orlando never being one of them) but figured I'd see if there were any expecting mamas living in the Orlando area or travelling there during your pregnancies and get your thoughts? I've also read that Orlando/theme park areas (where I'll be) are extremely diligent at taking care of mosquitos.

Thanks!
Grace

Re: Travelling to Orlando in a few weeks - any concerns for Zika?

  • I think Orlando is about the same risk level as any city that has those particular mosquitos (including my hometown of Atlanta, and about 1/3 of the US). Hard to avoid all of that. If you are diligent with bug spray (with deet), you're probably fine.

Mosquito-transmitted Zika is likely to happen in a few US cities this summer, but it's hard to guess which ones. Swampy places like Florida seem like they're higher risk, but those are also the places where local governments are spraying.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • Nope. There haven't been any home-grown cases in Orlando. Wear your bug repellent, and you'll be fine.
  • Wear bug spray! I live in FL and no one seems overly worried about zika. The only place that had travel warnings was near Miami and even there they have lifted the warning. Check the CDC website if you are concerned.
  • thanks everyone!!
  • I went to Florida a few weeks ago, with approval (and encouragement) from my OB. I just made sure to wear bugspray and didn't have any issues! Enjoy!
  • Hey! I live in Orlando, and I actually work outdoors at a resort, surrounded by a lake and the woods. I don't normally wear bug spray and I haven't even been bitten by a mosquito in well over a year! If they do come out, it's only after dark, but the entire city has begun spraying for mosquitoes so heavily since the Zika scare down in South Florida last year that I rarely see them at all anymore. Orlando is sustained by the tourism industry and we can't afford for people to be weary of visiting the area, so you are definitely safe from mosquitoes but I would try to avoid being outside while they are spraying the big chemicals (usually late night or early morning they will drive around spraying this, and I don't like to breathe it in!)
  • @gengelha - I'm glad you posted this - I was in Orlando in January, April and will be going back in September (we're big Disney fans and have been twice this year for RunDisney events) but my FIL called yesterday concerned that we shouldn't be going in September. So, while I kind of brushed him off -I was also slightly concerned - it's nice to hear other people's opinions too. :)

  • Thank you all, this is so comforting! @Mudge85 I felt so comfortable about going until my ob wasn't fully on board even with all the research I've done. Getting info from the mama's in the area especially and other people who have travelled there definitely help keep me confident in my decision! I read that orlando especially has been extremely diligent bc of their dependency on tourism so hearing how others have experienced it is so helpful

Ohh I love Boardwalk! We ended up at Caribbean Beach before the free dining offer because they were offering $75 gift cards/night because of construction. Then they released the free dining so we were able to add that to our package too! They are basically paying us to go - HA!

I love Soarin' too!! Have you been since they changed it to Soarin' around the world? I went on it at DisneyLand earlier this year and it's soo cool!

That's so awesome! I've never gone with the free dining plan but I have a feeling I'm not going to want to go back without it LOL. We ended up honeymooning at Disney so it definitely has a special place in our hearts, but to get engaged there...how freaking cool!!
